I thought I would post this as a thread for questions about 40k we are too embarassed to ask out of fear of being branded a total noob.

I'll kick us off with two rather silly ones from me:

1.: "You put the pauldrons the wrong way round" is a meme that is bandied about as cliched advice, much like "thin your paints". I know that squad stuff like tac arrows etc goes on the right and chapter markings on the left. Is that all this is talking about though? There are little squares on the pauldron on one side. Do they mean one is left and the other is right? Have I messed up all of my Spess Mahreens?

2.: I once heard someone talk about how he had put the wrong backpack on his special weapons trooper (the melta, flamer or plasma guy in a tac squad I mean). He was removing the old backpack and putting the "correct one" on. I did not want to appear like a fool so didn't ask him, but I'm asking now: does the special weapons guy really have a different backpack? Which one is it?

Thanks for any answers and I sincerely hope I won't be the only one posting "stupid" questions.

There is no innocence. Only degrees of guilt.

1) I'm not aware of the squares meaning anything, mine are put on however they ended up, if they do mean something at least you're not the only one!

2) I'm aware that in some cases there are special weapon backpacks (IG flamers come to mind) and alot of heavy weapons come with ammo-overflowing packs, but I don't think that includes Tac marines.

This was deffo not about a heavy weapons back pack. Normal tac marine with a flamer. I have spent hours looking at the different packs on the sprue deciding which one looks the most "special"

Only thing I can think of are Heavy Bolter or Lascannon backpacks. Beyond that theyre pretty standard outside of different skulls or eagle-headed Captain backpacks.

Do with your figures as you please.
Who is to say that the backpack you equipped the figure with is a new, low profile mark to throw off the enemy?
As long as weapon corresponds with what's on the list there should be no problems at all.

Exactly as long as they have the right weapons, a flamer backpack on a missile launcher guy doesn't matter.

There is no 'flamer backpack'. Only the heavy weapons have their own backpacks.

Not a question per se, but I put vox caster heads on all my IG flamers because I thought it looked better than an open helmet. Closer to a rebreather.

Now that I know better, it looks funny but it looked good at the time.

Here's one, Feel No Pain only got worse from 5th to 6th, right? It was raised from 4+ to 5+, but nothing about it got better, right? It was a pure nerf, nothing to balance it, correct? I just remember somewhere reading that it had some "pro" to balance the "con". Did I just imagine that?

In the warp, searching for Marbo

Can Ordinance weapons bypass the cover save interfering units provide?

Example: Two units of guardsmen are charging a tank (not assaulting) and the tank aims its cannon blast at the back unit, and hits...technically it's aiming though another unit which gives a cover save right? Or does it just go over them? Not to clear about interfering units and blasts.

Feel free to Privet Message me to keep from cluttering the page.

You can take it against anything now, as long as it doesn't cause Instant Death.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

So for example a plasma pistol (S7) would bypass FNP on a space marine because it ignored your armour save. Now you get your FNP save against it because it doesn't cause Instant Death.

I believe that barrage weapons can, because cover is counted from the centre of the blast. Direct fire weapons, even if they're ordnance or blast, would still give the enemy a cover save as usual.

alright, here's one that keeps confusing me. the stats for units with a character (CSM, for example) often have the troops listed with 1 attack and the character listed with 2. is that simply because the character comes with 2 CCWs (e.g., pistol and chainsword)? suppose you swap a CCW for a LC. since it's a specialist weapon, and the character only has one, do his base attacks drop back down to 1?

so with the character's default war gear (pistol + CCW) he really has 3 attacks base, 4 on the charge?

Refers to the sterotype of the young male adult nerd living in his mom's basement and playing WoW all day. The neckbeard is exactly what it sounds like.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

To be more specific, it's someone who 'doesn't have a life' and therefore has no need to shave, instead devoting his time to more important pursuits such as how to fully optimize their fantasy daemons list.

That being said, I sport a neckbeard half the week until my girlfriend comes over...

A neckbeard is that growth of fur that grows on the neck (of males) and underside of chin no higher than the edge of the jawline except to grow up along the back of the jaw to join with the sideburns.

It covers nothing of the face and is usually teamed with a moustache so sparse, it looks like a forest hit with agent orange.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
