Subject: Do vanilla marines need a heavy support option?

I was bored of using my tau. As i struggled to win. If i got a bad set of rolls, or lost one key unit. that was it. So i have turned to Slamanders. Having played a few games it dawned on me i have no heavy support units. ( me and my buddies have substitued out big guns never tire for a custom game)
A) I can't find anything that makes this illegal.
B) does anyone else do this? my assault termies, and equiping 2 squads of tactical marines with a Lascannon. And having my razorback more than adequate.
What are your thoughts and opinions?

There's nothing that says you NEED a heavy support choice. If you can make a viable army without one, go ahead. Automatically Appended Next Post: In my white scars army I only have 1 heavy support & no elites. It's all fast stuff and troops in APCs.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I agree, there's no must have heavy support choice. However, it isn't hard to find something that would compliment your existing army.

...Since when was it illegal to not have Heavy Support?
Generally speaking, there's no reason not to use it, but there's really no reason to take it if you have an alternate method of supplying long-range fire; vanilla Marines have some fair to good Heavy Support choices (Vindicators, Predators, Devastators, and Thunderfire Cannons), but you could get by with Tactical Squads for firepower and a close-support-oriented force just as easily.

Nope, you aren't required to have a heavy support choice(s)
That said, if you can't find the points for thunderfire cannons, you don't know what you're missing!

You aren't required but I feel like your be a fool not to exercise some of the heavy support options. At lower points you have dakka preds and thunderfires, at medium and higher points games you have vindicators and autolas preds. And if you have armies that use cover a lot you could use WW's.

and if you have loads of points left there are a ton of different Land Raider options like the Ares, Achillies, Hyperios etc etc
My BA / vanilla heavy support is normally a Predator and a pair of Vindicators or a Predator and the Ares.
Depending on how many points I have left. I have run a pair of Ares before...

The only thing I rarely run with in my 6th Edition Vanilla Marines army is elite choices.
Unless it's a drop podded Sternguard w/ Combi Weapons, or Assault Terminators and Vulkan, it's not really worth taking over things you can get in the Heavy Support or Fast Attack slots.
Speeders, Vindicators, Flyers, TFCs, and even Auto/Las Predators are amazing options (barring a Vulkan or Bike army) to take. You are missing out if you do not use them.

There are a lot of different ways to go with codex marines, and HS picks are not necessary. There are a lot of nice things in there though. I don't run a lot myself, partly because I don't own that many. From a point perspective, it's easy to fit them into a list, from a cash POV, it's hard to fit a lot of ~$60 tanks into your army.

This is where you switch it up on your buddy and take a combination of predators and vindicators. I couldn't play a game with HS, its usually where I start building my list.

just to note i added, a whirlwind and a las/heavy bolter predator to my list. Didn't really make too much difference. apart from the predator took a lot of fire away from everything else. Whirlwind was a great addition. annoyed the enemy alot, and diverted attention away from my scoring units.Pinned a fair amount too!
