Sup, just ordered a bunch of mantic marines to proxy as guardsmen in my army. I don't have all that much time due to my job, so what's the best way of painting them quickly?

I did a drybrush method for fast results:

Spraypaint Krylon Fusion Camo Olive Drab
Drybrush P3 Ordic Olive
Drybrush light Catachan Green

Paint guns black, sponge chip everything metal.

Paint boots black.

Paint skin Bleached Bone, wash with Flesh Wash. Paint eyes. Done.



You can churn out a ton of guys in an evening.

The above advice is good. I don't know much about speed painting, more like slow painting, but I do have experience with these models.

One thing they have over GW is lots of detail, more like the metal figs GW used to produce. Each body has a good amount of straps, buckles, holsters, pouches & equipment so keep that in mind.

Also, you may or may not be aware of their integrated based. It's around the same width as the gap in a GW slottabase but it's a perfect circle attached to the feet. So if you plan on using custom bases you will need to remove this. If not, it fits into the bigger base but leaves a bit of a gap.

The figs above look really nice but I'd just do solid colors, brush-dip, matte finish and done. Here's some Neo Soviets and Junkers

For some figs I'll do a bit of drybrushing of hair, etc, but the only drybrushing above is a bit of silver on the shotguns.

Being able to spray on the basecoat and primer in one step is great. They Krylon and Rustoleum camo sprays are good for this. Also, spray primer is available in shades of grey and even ruddy brown.

That inking looks badass...I need to find a way of getting that miniwax stuff in the UK

In the UK, you can use Army Painter (though it costs 4x as much) or see if there is another stain+Polyurethane combination product at you're local home improvement/hardware store.

Minwax and Armypainter are basically just stain+polyurethane.

Check the minwax site for examples and then see if you can find similar shades near you.

are those yalmuka I see on those dudes?. No doubt carrying the Torah in to battle.

How did I miss that? They've all got full beards, scripture and yarmulke!

The army painter sells for £20 which is..a lot. It's as much as a squad of infantry. I'd rather save the money if I can so I might check some hardware websites (British people seem to prefer to do things online for some reason).

Do a google search for dipping, uk, and minwax equivalents. There's some mention that brands like these are a good start. None of these is my info, just bits I picked out. The one thing I would recommend is staying away from Mahogany or other red-tinted colors except for special uses. A nice darkish walnut color will get you close to Army Painter's "Strong Tone" the challenge will be finding an equivalent to AP's "Dark Tone" which is a black pigmented dip, but is not black paint. In the US we have minwax "Tudor" but I'm not sure what UK brands have.

The name Ronseal pops up often. Despite your preference for internet, unless you can be sure it's a poly+Stain product, asking your hardware store employee is a good place to start.

Just a note for UK+Ireland gamers that RONSEAL (http://www.ronseal.co.uk/) do a similar product to the MinWax Polyshades Satin Tudor used by the majority of posters. I bought the Walnut, although a Tudor (i.e. black) equivilent may be available. There is both a quck-drying (touch-dry in 20 minutes) and standard polyurathane (24 hours drying) product. I bought the quick drying and found it works well. No matt finish seems to be available, only satin and gloss.and

I have a brand name that your UK readership might be interested in, Dulux Woodsheen which I purchased from Great Mills (UK hardware/DIY store) for GBP4.13. The two colours I have tried are Satin Ebony, which is black and mutes colours too much for my liking and the fantastic Satin Walnut which is the one I really recommend. Great coverage on pale caucasian flesh tones and I have been using a second brush loaded with Humbrol Cellulose Thinners to lift any large puddles that I don't want on the finished miniatures. I have been painting some Foundry 7th cavalry with this technique and am very impressed at both the speed of production and the shading effect on flesh and brown colours.HTH,

I assembled and painted some of the mantic marines recently for a friend. I actually found them quite time consuming to put together, because plastic glue doesn't work, and the mould release was difficult to shift, meaning super glue barely worked either.

They were dead easy to paint though. I just painted them grey, painted the faces, and gave them a black wash. Then I dry brushed a bit of boltgun metal over. They come out like little starship troopers. I choose grey so I wouldn't have to change colours for the guns. it was really quick.

I don't really see any point in investing in army painter for these guys. They are really tiny, a decent sized brush and some wash would be just as quick.
