At what points-level is it rational to take fortifications?

I'm playing IG and contemplating putting an ADL in a 500 point list.

For IG at 500; use your spare points after buying tanks to buy an ADL.

Gunline IG 1850 pts
Elysian IG 3000 pts
Horus Heresy Imperial Fists 500 pts

I'd say only if you're facing flyers and have insufficient air support - so probably not before 1000 pts or more.

At 500 points, I don't know many armies that can spare one hundred or more points on a flyer. I'd say +1000 points is the point where you start considering taking one.

1000 points, alright thank you! That is what I was looking for.

spending 100 points on an ADL in a 500 point game...? That's 20% of your army right there. This is a bad decision. With games that small, there will be more than enough cover to go around anyway.

Save the 100 for the ADL and put it toward another Russ. I wouldn't dream of taking fortifications in anything under 1000 points.

But ADLs are only 50 points. Don't bother getting the gun and you start with a solid firebase for your infantry to cower behind

Thats why you don't play games under 1000 points. The game is not designed to be played at that point level. Its meant to be played between 1k and 2.5k. With the sweet spot being around 1850-2k.

The only reason to play 500 point games is because you are just starting out and are learning the basic rules. Which 500 points can teach you, but it is not any sort of balanced.

Orks and IG are horrendously strong below 1000 pts. Space Marines, and any other relativly elite army, is severly gimped because they have to buy an expensive HQ and 2 expensive troop choices. The smallest legal SM army is 280 points, thats a captain/chaplain/librarian with basic wargear and two 5 man tactical squads with no upgrades. And Tac squads can't get upgrades(even the free ones) till they are full 10 man squads. Which puts the army at 380 points with only free wargear options.

As for when to take an ADL. All the time. Its that good.

I play plenty of 500 point games. We have a map based campaign that I play in. The average game size is between 500 and 750 points currently.

However, you don't need even a basic ADL at 500 points. That extra squad is way more useful.

DA cheapest legal army would be 185 points:

Librarian - 65 pts
Scout Squad - 60 pts
Scout Squad - 60 pts

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, vanilla marines could go cheaper if they took scouts instead of tac marines
