I'm taking some old IG off the shelf and intend to convert them using some arms w/ lasguns from Victoria Miniatures as I hate the huge Cadian shoulder pads and bulky lasguns. If I walked into a GW with this force would it contradict their rule on non-GW models?

Yes, most likely. If it were less obvious you might get away with it, but weapons are plainly seen.

GW stores pretty well mean all GW components.

Really depends on the store honestly. Some are totally hardcore, while others will see you at least bought the cadian troops in the first place. I recommend contacting your local store where you want to play and see what they have to say on the subject, because all you'll get here is speculation of what they *might* or *might not* let you do. Only the manager of the store in question can answer for you. Call them, be honest about what you bought and your conversions and see what they have to say. The less hardcore stores will not be upset that you have different arms/guns on your models if the rest of your force is GW minis.

Oh just say it's a gun from the rogue trader era that's GW make and see if they want to argue with that.

I believe the official policy was the model had to be 50% GW product to be legal(or maybe it was 75%?)

That said, what they don't know won't hurt them or you in this situation. Most GW employees are not familiar with the entire GW product line including OOP, and certaintly won't recognize a non-GW model for what it is unless its very obvious.

Cheers for the responses guys, very helpful. Ultimately it seems best to contact the store.

TBH I always assumed it was a strict 100% rule but recently I've been looking up Battle Reports with photos on here and elsewhere and there's some example of models in-game in GW stores with heads/guns/etc. that are clearly not GW due to the scale and style so I became confused. But I see its greyer than that now, cheers for the help again guys!

I would not contact the store. You could end up on a blacklist for no proper reason(yes, some do have blacklists)

If a store is going to "blacklist" you over something so petty, would you really want to game there anyway?

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

How exactly would they do this? Most retail stores don't have caller ID on their phones and you don't have to give your name when calling. You don't even have to tell them what kind of army you have.

Just call, ask to speak with the manager, make sure to get their name, ask what their policy is regarding non gw bits on models to be used in their store. If they ask for more detail simply say you have an army that you swapped the arms and standard weapons on.

Viola. You have your answer and have given no information that can be used to identify yourself..

In my opinion, the army is yours, paid for by you, to do with as you please. As GW has said in print many times: It's YOUR game.
I scratch build all the time. I have stuff that looks better than the GW version (Ork big Guns, for example), is unique, fully painted and worth a lot more.
Consider this: Our armies will become heirlooms, our great grandchildren will want to game with them to feel a connection to us (provided GW is still around and with a good reputation), therefore, ask yourself: You walk into a GW store with your great Grand Dads' hypothetical massively scratch built wild west guard-should the manager walk you out? A week later, the Manager rocks up with his own Grand Dads' Robocop versus Predator:The Cereal box collection Tau army which his GrandDad together with his Dad took 19 years to assemble off Ebay. Should you refuse to play him?

Having said that, I personally recommend a maximum of 30% non GW parts on a model. This can be abused, of course, as it can technically be a single Digimon with a bolt pistol and a purity seal.

I really hope that doesn't come to pass. I'd much rather my great grandchildren build their own. After all that's how I had to do it. I didn't have someone just hand me an army to play with and say "go have fun". No, I put sweat, tears and blood (darn x-acto) into this. If that was good enough for me then by george it ought to be good enough for them. Wouldn't want to have a bunch of spoiled brats running about anyway.

Just out of curiosity: what model was it and in what context?

I Dunno about other Gee dubs but my local one seems to have no problems with non gw parts or even completely not gw models. the managers seems to follow the rule of cool.

(heck one player plays with reaper models as a chaos spawns and has yet to be confronted)

I actually have daemon princes for each of my chaos armies that are reaper models. They have one that is wolf headed with 4 arms, two of which end in crab claws (slaanesh), 1 that looks like a large humanoid vulture (Tzeentch) and other that looks like your stereotypical daemon with bat wings and a flaming sword (khorne) and then I have a two headed reaper ogre (nurgle). I also have a ghoul king fig that makes a great nurgle herald. Of course it has been about about 20 years since I last actually played in a GW store.

Heh.
That is so true. Citadel Miniatures have been around for a long, long time and their miniature lines are huge. Your average 20 year old retail drone is not going to have the knowledge base to effectively argue with you if you were to claim that you were using OOP parts/models. I've discussed the futility of most staffers trying to enforce the "only play with our toys" rule in the past: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/270537.page

But as others have pointed out, the chance of your conversion even being noticed and you called on it is extremely slim. How often does a staffer come up and scrutinize a player's army in search of "contraband"? I've never seen it occur, or even heard about it. Has anyone else? Be honest now.

Finally, the last I heard the required percentage for "legal" conversions is 75%. Once again, that's almost impossible to enforce. Given GW's recent ill-considered jihad against third party bitz sellers, they might be taking a harder line right now. But I doubt it.
