Hiding in a dark alley with a sharp knife!

Heh. Kaldor is going to hate this one....

So I have more 40k armies than I really have time to play. (13 at the moment with another on the painting block) My favorite amongst my loyalist forces is my recently added Imperial Fist army. I have been a fan of that chapter since the first edition of the Epic rules. I also figured out how to quickly produce a good looking Yellow figure and the resulting army is very striking. I keep adding new units to the army and a couple of days ago, I thought it might be more efficient to paint up enough options to roll several armies into one. That is to say I'm considering painting up enough other options for my Imperial Fists to play them using the vanilla Space Marine book, Blood Angels, or as Dark Angels depending on my mood. With help from the magic of "counts" as, I can have an all singing, all dancing Marine army that can be used for all the books while retaining the Imperial Fist look I prefer. As I stated in another thread on "morphing" armies while a few people on line (see above) express howls of outrage about this practice, in the real world no one but the occasional TFG would have much of an issue with it.

Should I go for this plan, I will not be folding my Space Wolves into the Fists. The units in that army are too specific (TWC etc) and I like the look of my old school models only Space Wolves too much to abandon them.

Now I just need to paint some Grey Knights yellow. How would an Imperial Fist Dreadknight look?

But seriously, most of the units for both Dark Angels and Blood Angels are easy enough to replicate with vanilla Marine figures, I've already experimented with putting Furioso parts on a generic dreadnaught body, etc, but I'd like to cook up a distinctive "counts as Death Company" unit. So my question is this: what are some good ideas for a faux "Death Company" squad paint scheme that still fits with the Imperial Fist look of the main army?

Maybe something inspired by the Emperor's Champion? Luarel's, terminator honors, etc.

Well, Death Company for blood angels are black and red...

Being Imperial fists, black and white should work perfectly

I actually think that's a good idea, use Black Templars as DC. Nutters with chainswords and dodgy gene seed, wear mostly black, possible mental issues, non Codex compliant.

I've been doing the same thing as far as monoscheme to represent all of the options for all of the books. At the prices we pay for minis, you're damn right I want my cake and to eat it too! Then ofcourse, there's absolutley nothing against the rules, or the spirit of the rules, to deny it. You're not playing BA painted as IF. You're playing the IF 8th Company.

DC ideas:

-Simply reverse the primary colors so the unit sticks out. Black and yellow?

-Completely different color scheme representing attachments. Blood Angels?

-Painted just like the rest with only the helmet color changed? This would be based on how you do your SGTs. If you go white helmets, red or black helmets mght look nice on IF. If using red SGTs, white?

Your army, your time, your dime, paint'em however you like.

You could go with something like a penance squad. For whatever reason (cowardice, sloppy bolter drill, consorting with xeonos) the marines need to atone for some misdeads. Paint them normal, but black over all chapter, unit, and imperial insignia. They are not worthy of diplaying them until they have done thier time. This will also differentiate them from other units, and keep with the black=death company scheme. They can then charge into battle with zealotous rage, seeking to redeam themselves via glory and valor.

The concept of chapters going on penance crusades is not new, and common with the fists. This is just a squad level version of that.

Glorioski, do you have something constructive to add to the thread or are you just going to troll?

Chronepsis- I pick out my squad SGTs with a red helmet skulls.

Nevelon - I like that idea quite a bit. It's also fairly in keeping with the fluff. One of the other reasons I like Imperial fists is that I read Ian Watson's novel "Space Marine". (one of the few Black Library books I've read) Aunit of marines doing pennance would be in keeping with the spirit of draconian discipline and extreme self-chastising that he describes in his novel.

He has a point.

First, I would probably place this in P&M.

Second, I think for your sake, you need some real fluff behind these guys.

I like the idea of using another Armies codex if it better fits with your army's theme. If you want to use the Blood Angels for your Imperial Fists that's cool with me, especially if you do what the following suggests;

Make them the 8th Assault Company, and if you want tactical Marines, take from the 7th or 6th COs. To account for speical rules, fluff it that most of the Marines in the 8th are Hot Blooded, hence their assignment to being Assault Marines. Second, a Penance Squad, like Nevelon suggested, what better place to assign them then to the 8th?

I actually built a squad of death company for my Scouring era IF army. Color-wise they're black with yellow shoulder pads with the crusader's cross on their shoulders, lots of tabards, scrolls, & purity seals.
