Hi everyone. I want to make my army completely fluffy, so I just wanted to ask, for fluff reasons, do Catachans use tanks? I know gw has tanks painted in Catachan colors and stuff, but is there a fluff backing? Catachans are only usually sent to jungle planets to fight, and in the jungle they can't use tanks, only sentinels. But I know when Catachans are out of the jungle they usually use at least some tanks. So is their any fluff backing as to why Catachans would be out of the jungle, using tanks?

yes they do, my guess would be that the tanks are used in less dense areas of foliage on jungle worlds, or reserved for roads and defensive duty, when off world on a non jungle worlds catachan will need those tanks.
Besides the lemans can always be fitted with flamethrowers for the dense stuff

NP buddy, if memory serves I think I even read somewhere there was a Catachan armored regiment in some campaign.
Also you can always add a bulldozer blade with foliage cutters to the front a jungle modified leman, just some vines and stuff on it and it will fit right in.

in ww2 they attached cullins hedgerow devices to plow through the tall heavy hedges that surrounded all the fields near normandy.
so 40k up something like that and whola anti-jungle mods

Of course they have tanks! I'm pretty sure that a guard regiment without armor mounted on treads would be executed for heresy of the highest order. Catachan tanks are just have more camo on them so they can be sneaky-like, and instead of sponsons they just have big muscular arms sticking out the sides.

Catachans would use tanks just like the Americans did in Vietnam, which as an army is what they are reminiscent of. I doubt even Death Worlds are dense jungle all over, there's patchy bits.

I vaguely remember that when the Hellhound first came out it was tagged as being a device the Catachans used extensively to clear foliage. Why fight the nasty deathworld beasties in their own environment when you can napalm the suckers

Well I suppose technichly it depends on the regiment.
Most infantry regiments have heavy armour attached to them as required from an armoured regiment.
But I don't see why the Catachans wouldn't have tanks. I seem to remember a plant on Catachan as a strangle vine (or something like that) that constricts round things so can crush tanks and bunkers apparently. This being the case, whose tank would it have been if not a Catachan tank.

Tanks are quite valuable in jungle terrain. In Vietnam, the United States used them for base defense, spearheads into contested urban environments, and along roadways as heavy hitters to support infantry advances. The jungles had plenty of open areas where they could be utilized as well; as a previous poster stated, there are "patchy" areas in forested areas (whether temperate forests or rainforests).
OTOH, the tanks used in Vietnam had a troubling tendency to throw tracks due to the terrain, as well. In dense foliage, they could be hindered by the rampant growth, but that is what deforestation is for.

You could always have them as another regiment attached to a Catachan infantry division. Most tanks are part of dedicated armored regiments, so you could have a Cadian armored regiment attached to a Catachan infantry uni. That'll make it fluffy too.

The Codex Catachans mentions Catachan regiments being a "relatively lightly armed force which uses its skills in jungle warfare to balance its lack of big guns or tanks".
That said, tanks are usually attached from specialised armour regiments for the duration of a campaign, anyways, so ... I'd go with what MrMoustaffa proposed.
If you want to give the tanks a "Catachan feel" also remember that regiments with attached forces tend to intermingle the longer they work together. For example, this file has the datasheet of the Catachan 22nd Airborne Assault Group, and the aircrews of the Valkyries they use have pretty much become "adopted" by the Catachans on such a close level that they even "wear the red bandanas of the Jungle Fighters".
(also, check out Straken's rant on page 15 in the PDF - that guy is hilarious )

yeah I know lol. I have an actual tangible copy of codex: catachans. I was just wondering how to be fluffy with tanks while using codex imperial guard. But yeah straken is funny "you there! Pick up his hand! Maybe the medic can stitch it on for him later."
