Hello all,
I've been thinking about making some custom units for my new Tau army, and I figured I'd put them all in one place for review. right now I only have one unit, but I plan on having more soon. so here's what I've got right now, I'd love to know what you think of it:

Archerfish Team:
Archer: WS: 2 / BS: 3 / S: 3 / T: 3 / W: 1 / I: 2 / A: 1 / LD: 7 / SV: 4+ Unit type: infantry / points cost: 9 each
Archer Shas'Ui: WS: 2 / BS: 3 / S: 3 / T: 3 / W: 1 / I: 2 / A: 2 / LD: 8 / SV: 4+ Unit type: infantry (character) / points cost: 19

unit composition: 6 archers

Wargear: Combat Armor, pulse rifle , photon grenades
special rule: supporting fire

options:
three archers MUST take ONE of the following heavy weapons for the listed points cost: flamer +5 pts, burst cannon +10 pts, fusion blaster +15 pts, missile pod +15 pts, plasma rifle +15 pts.
you may add one archer shas'ui for the listed points cost.
an archer shas'ui may take up to two drones from the drones list in Codex: Tau Empire.
the archer Shas'Ui may take a markerlight and target lock for +15 pts.
the entire unit may take the bonding knife ritual special rule for +1 pt per model.

so what do you think? any tweaks you would make?

Ok... so...
What are they? (Firewarriors with guns?)
What slot do they go in? (Seems like Heavy Support?)
Why are they what they are? (If it's just firewarriors with heavy weapons, it goes against what Tau combat doctrines about. - and I'd go for a Drone Controller + drones with a single Heavy Weapon each, like Sniper Drone teams.)
It's only 6 (7 with shas'ui) models with 2 heavy weapons and that's it?

Also, here's a unit template for you.
Spoiler:

Ok finally got my head screwed on straight after a crazy day yesterday (uni pres decided to "redistribute" the money from all the programs and the campus was in open revolt, fun times) anyways a few answers to your questions:
yes they are fire warriors with heavy weapons.
as far as slots I'm torn between troops and heavy support, they just can't compete with the nice heavy support options, so I thought troops might be better.
they are what they are because they come from a backwater world where some fire warrior in a heated battle one day decided that he should pry a burst cannon off of his wrecked battlesuit and use it as a heavy weapon to survive a battle. his act proved inspirational and very effective, so that colony started issuing its spare battlesuit weapons to capable infantry. because what good is a gun if it just sits there?
sorry I think I screwed up the wording, it is supposed to mean that three of the fire warriors pick three of the same heavy weapon, not that you exchange three of them for one heavy weapon.
does that help?

Uh... i don't think that this would work according to the Tau fluff. For one, suit weapons are integrated into the battlesuits - they drain power directly from the suit's reactor and their targeting/firing mechanisms are connected to the suit. An infantryman cannot just rip off the weapon from a suit and use it. And only the Earth Caste can do modifications on the weapons, because it is their job and not the business of the Fire Caste.

/sigh, really I just wanted to make some Tau with some miniguns, just for rule of cool's sake. so here's the new fluff for this: it's an experiment in miniaturized power supplies. My Tau army is from a backwater world where they salvage any tech that falls from the series of wrecked ships circling the planet. inside one of the wrecks was a new power source that they are experimenting with for supplying more efficient power to weight ratios. this unit is a proof of concept and is currently being expanded and tested.

Alright..
The main thing being the strength issue...
It could be experimental xv12 battlesuits.
Bulk up the backpack a bit, maybe bulk out the chest a little, then have the burst cannon arm in a 'sleeve' similar to stealgh suits, but just one arm...
I'd say maybe a 0-2 troops choice that doesn't count towards your 0-2 minimum.
Make it 3-9, they all start with burst cannons.
