Having been into this hobby since '87, I've collected every book that has come down the pike as far as rules, codices, etc., goes. As it stands, I have a huge amount of space being taken up with books. Don't get me wrong, I like books and I have a huge collection of regular reading books also, but I am ready to move into the 21st Century and try out the ebook thing. It just makes more sense to me to be able to download all of them to one place (or multiple places for backup), they are cheaper and I get to check them out sooner.
All of that having been said, do any of you have a good way to read them without having a tablet or reader?

iBooks cannot be read except on iOS devices afaik.
So unless you already own an iPad, then you'll have to continue as you have the last 26 years.

iBook codices no.
But of course GW offers all most digital codices also on epub and kindle formats, both of which have desktop readers. See
http://www.blacklibrary.com/games-workshop-digital-editions
edit: I'm not 100% sure does GW offer ebook versions of all digital codices, but at least Tau, Eldar, SM, SOB and BA are there, plus the supplements.

Not to piss on your chips or anything but I thought the iPad/epub codexes were the same price as the in-print hardcopy ones?

C:Tau and C:Eldar are about 8 or 9 pound cheaper as an ebook. IBook versions are more expensive than epub though
Marines is about 5 pound cheaper.
Admittedly buying from a discounter its cheaper to get the hardcopy.

As pointed out on here previously, there are regular offers for discount iTunes vouchers, it's pretty easy to get 20% off. At the moment Superdrug in the UK have £25 vouchers for £20, as do Asda direct.

GW is more and more cashing in on people who would like to have all Codices and supplements. That's why they release so many no-effort-copy-paste things lately. It's not worth buying an iPad just to reread the Inquisition entry of the Grey Knight Codex with 2 added Warlord tables and some pics from the webstore for the price of a printed Grey Knight Codex. I think it is not worth it anymore.

The most recent Mac OS can open the codexes too. Otherwise stick to epubs if you want them on your PC. Do you have actual proof of this or is this another Krootism about GW?

Macs recently got iBooks as well. I imagine an iBooks app for Android or WIndows is in the near future. Automatically Appended Next Post: ClockworkZion wrote: Aerethan wrote:iBooks cannot be read except on iOS devices afaik.

I have downloaded both the iBooks version of some digital codexes, and the epub of others and prefer the epub format anyway. The iBooks ones have fancy do-whats that pop up, but the epubs, I can read on my phone with no problems.

AesSedai wrote:^ how about rational observation and the awareness that GW is a profit driven entity? Does he really need a citation to satisfy you?
Because "profit driven entity" does not automatically equate a buy out. First we'd need a company who is highly interested to break into miniature wargames (I know people like to cite Hasbro as a possibility but do we have any sign that they have any plans to even TRY to get into this niche?), then it's got to get past a share-holder vote (as they control the company) and depending on whose laws apply it could even have other issues, like in the US the government approves all purchases of other companies to ensure they wouldn't gain some kind of Monopoly Power in the market.
Mergers are not quiet, and they aren't simple. And even if GW is trying to make themselves attractive for companies to buy them out, there still needs to be a company that wants to take them, and no one has really presented any sort of evidence that there is a potential buyer anywhere yet.

Clockwork Zion: I'm reminded of a time a saw a young filipino man dancing furiously down the street to music only he could hear.
Kindly explain your comment, please. What bearing does talk of mergers have in a thread on PC reading of digital codex? Or more appropriately, on my comment vis a vis yours?

Sorry I mixed my Krootisms up. I was thinking about his statement in another thread where he said GW is planning to be bought out.
Too many tabs open at the same time.
I did get a response from GW DE that I posted in 40k General about why the stuff is so copy and paste, and it's because they didn't want to create confusion between the books by making things work too different in the new book versus the old (or otherwise invalidate the GK options by making the new stuff significantly better thus screwing over people who were playing the old stuff). From what they said it looks like C: =][= has a very strong chance of getting a free update in the future when things shift over and GK either drop the Inquisition or update it since the digital codex can be changed without invalidating it unlike a print version.
But you know, assuming they're just trying to take all your money is good too I guess.

I believe the latest OS update allows IBooks to be read directly on a Mac OS. A step closer to viewing it on a PC.

Must be another Kroot then, not me.
But you already confirmed in another thread that you attribute wrong things to me. Maybe you are too involved with insulting others

No, I'm pretty sure it was you actually. I just had about 10 or so tabs open at the same time and mixed up which one I read what from at the time of posting.

And what I actually attribute to you is a very overall negative attitude full of things you have no proof of by want to spread around as "fact" regarding GW. You can't pretend that doesn't describe a large volume of what you post.

You could, theoretically, use an application to create a Virtual machine, run Mac OS X in that, and then run iBooks in that, btu that's kind of messy.
Or for the more tricky option, run a VM of Mac OS X, run XCode int hat, and use XCode's iPad Tester, if it's possible to run iBooks on that.
Neither of these solutions are particularly good, however.
