A couple friends and I were looking at starting a new Mordheim campaign / league / thing. I remember having played it years ago, but my memory is foggy at best. I looked into this a couple years ago and saw that people had made different "fan updates" and things for it (the phrase "heroheim" comes to mind?). I was hoping I could get some information from you guys:

A) Would you recommend going with bog standard Mordheim rules, or an "updated" fan edition? If the latter, what are the options and which would you recommend?

B) Is there a database of available warbands somewhere? I know at least one player is interested in seeing what non-standard options are available in the fan editions (Dwarves, elves, pirates, vikings, etc etc)

Are there any other tips or resources you'd recommend for a campaign of four players or so?

Thanks a lot!

I am by no means a Mordheim expert having only recently started it myself as part of my Specialist Games blog by as I understand it, there are several routes you can go:

a) Stick with the original rules in the original rulebook using only the warbands provided therein. Pros - well it's official I suppose. Rules freely available on GW website. Cons - not so good for your buddy that wants to use esoteric warbands. There is also issues with game balance apparently as campaigns progress.

b) Use the original rules that have been tweaked and modified by the community to provide better campaign balance. This is an ongoing project called Coreheim. Pros - still somewhat official since the rules are more or less based on the original. Removes the balance issues that the original suffered from. Cons - still no support for other warbands.

c) Use another community made ruleset like Heroheim. These are perhaps less likely to be similar to the original since they have evolved over time. Pros - more support for all sorts of warbands. Cons - not as balanced as Coreheim

A final solution is to use both the original ruleset and then track down the Town Cryer publications/annuals that had the 'official' GW expansions. These publications added in more warbands and what not. However, the rules still suffer from the same issues that the original game had.

Going by your requirements, I guess option c is probably the best. Personally speaking, I prefer to play the 'official' rules, warts and all, for what it is worth but the Heroheim community has a fair degree of longevity and is obviously dedicated to producing the best quality game that they can. Hope that helps!

I do not know how much of a help this'll be, but you can find lots and lots of Mordheim resources here: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?339889-Mordheim-PDFs
