On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I often spend some time just looking at 'random picture' in the gallery. It's a great way to view some wonderfully modelled and painted miniatures (and has always been a nice accompaniment for me with a cup of tea in the morning!)

That being said, of late I do wonder sometimes whether there is any form of moderation, or just whatever gets uploaded is fair game? Recently, I've found myself having to skip through probably at least half of the images I'm viewing, usually on the basis of them being atrocious photos but also very poor subject matter.

I can supply links if needed, but in the last 20 minutes I've spent viewing the gallery I've seen what looks like a Nintendo 8-bit 10-pixel version of an ork's face, a photo entitled 'Grey Knight shin' (seriously, just a single block of grey on the screen with no discernible features) as well as a picture of a discarded sprue with what looks like used tissue paper in the background. These are just some examples.

All of the things I've described have got a 'moderator approved' message next to them. Just wondered if there were any other thoughts on this? It's a great feature on Dakka, don't know if it's really practical but are there any thoughts of making this section of the website more than just a storage space for whatever photos get uploaded, and whether there should be any review of the standard of photos submitted?

There is at least one gallery moderator, however the sheer size of the gallery and the amount of submissions it receives daily would require much more than a few volunteers (because that's what Mods are, after all) tending to it.

There's also the fact that any of the images hosted here might be linked in various threads, be they articles, painting blogs, or whatever, requiring mods to take even more time to contact the person and ask them to update it with a better image, or even just to tell them it's being deleted.

Having a way of flagging particularly bad pictures might be useful, but any large-scale gallery moderation and filtration based on image quality would have to be powered by user reports, and even then it'd likely require people to volunteer even more of their time in order to get those reports answered.

Long story short, from where I'm sitting, trying to strictly moderate the gallery by sifting through thousands of images to find those that are truly appalling is a task far too grand to ask or expect of moderators.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I could be wrong but I believe that if you find an image in the gallery that should not be there, you can tag it "delete" and a mod will eventually clean it up. Kid Kyoto would be the one to ask.

Correct, just tag the image delete and I sweep for them from time to time.

I might also disable voting if there's a useful image but nothing really to vote on.

If you see something that urgently must be dealt with (graphic material for example) PM me or another mod.

Thanks for your help!
