As it says in the thread title, I am trying to find some information about what date the later marks of space marine vehicles were introduced to the imperium. The MK1/Deimos rhino was used in the heresy, but most chaos rhinos (even legion ones) are now the MKII. I know that they loot some, but did they have any of their own from shortly after the heresy?

Anybody have any information/sources?

Why must I always choose beween certain death and probable death.

I’m interested as well about the in-game reason. The actual reason for the different marks is the different kits released over the years.

The Deimos is the Mk2 Rhino chassis, incidentally, and took over from the Mk1 which was the original STC design for a civilian colony rover.

They were probably used during the heresy/great crusade and became the standard afterwards.

According to the FW Horus Heresy book 3 they were around during the heresy - there is a picture of an Iron Warriors MKII Mars Pattern rhino. Haven't seen a MKII Landraider in there though.

I've always taken the Deimos to be simply an update of the original plastic Rhino which was identified in Imperial Armour volume 2 (first edition) as the Mk1b, whilst the modern plastic Mars pattern was labelled the MkIIc

edit/addendum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvdD50nSISs the Deimos is the Mk1c

Mars pattern Rhinos as well as MkII and MkIII Land Raiders were apparently in use before the Heresy as FW does 'Legion' Night Lord and Word Bearer doors for all three - the latter including the Aquila which I doubt they'd be adding to new vehicles mid-heresy.

... damn my blurred vision. I have been utterly certain for the last five years or more that the current plastic rhino is the MkIIIc, and the Deimos was originally released as the MkIIb.

I was wondering whether to take the rhino doors FW sell in the heresy section as gospel, as they also fit some of the flyers which were definitely pre heresy. But now we know, and knowing is half the battle.
