I saw this bat-rep and loved kestral's description: Your small band is stranded on Pentegrad, a world of vast oceans teaming with Krill preyed upon by vast factory ships. It evoked the ships in Gears of War 3 and the water planets from Star Wars, and a sort of inverse of the spice miners from Dune. I'm trying to think up more atypical sci-fi worlds or inspiration for new 40k worlds (i.e. something a little more flavorful than "desert planet" or "ice world.")

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/524342.page

Anyway, here's the description of my IG regiment's homeworld, post your own fluff or ideas for new worlds!

Steigen is a rocky agri-world, newly rediscovered and integrated into the Imperium. It is a relatively large moon, one of six, orbiting the massive gas giant Hesse, located in a binary star system known as Eron. Active tectonics make the planet very mountainous, while turbulent cold rainy seasons (Hesse’s eclipses can block out the sunlight for weeks at a time) necessitate the cultivation of diverse fungal crops as well as resilient animal herds to sustain the population and contribute to the planet’s tithes. The planet is very humid, and temperatures at the equator range from icy to sub tropical several times throughout a single solar orbit. Steigen is a major producer of a variety of high quality medicines and narcotics derived from its unique crops. The trade in the fungi with more exotic side effects has created a flourishing black market. Addiction to the glomero spore is approaching epidemic levels, and many of the planet's newly appointed feudal lords feed and rely on that addiction to keep their peasants in line.

Schrott

Planet name: Schrott (previous name unknown)
Current Official Imperial Classification: Deathworld
Mechanicus Designation: Vault World
Original Purpose: Storage of pre-heresy Prototypes, Experiments, Unknown Imperial Technology gathered across the galaxy, "Unsuccessful" Prototypes built from STC fragments, etc
Inhabitants: Approximately 2 billion. Exact number unknown.
Vault contents: CLASSIFIED

Schrott is a Mechanicus ruled planet that houses a structure simply known as "The Vault" of which it gets is Mechanicus designation. Records of when the Vault was constructed have long been lost and its contents are classified and sequestered. The Vault's doors alone are large enough for a pair of Emperor titans to stride through with room for an average armored colum in between, with the rest of the structure extending deep within the crust of the planet with hallways big and small leading to various rooms and doors of varying size containing all manner of machines, devices and vehicles of varying origin. This Vault was the main reason for the current state the planet is in as well. Dark Mechanicus forces attempted to attack the planet ages ago which in turn prompted a response from a extremely large Imperial Force. The battles rages for many years reducing the planet to its barren state but also littering it with meters of scrap metal, exploded ordinance, ruined war machines and even fallen spacecraft. Oceans turned green and toxic from metals, Dust storms that could flay a man to the bone in seconds, Ion Storms that send bolts of lighting everywhere, Schrott is a desolate place. Yet still humanity survives with the imperial citizens helped by the resident Mechanicus, the fallen spacecraft converted into cities and indoor farms for food production, massive water purification plants, towns built from the scrap metal and so on.
The Mechanicus has since sought to uncover what lies within the Vault and a means to test whatever may be uncovered within its depths. Expeditions have uncovered various weapon systems and vehicles which have been put to service with the only armed force to be raised from Schrott. The 91st Experimental (the designation, 91st, coming from a mechanized regiment that held the Vault from Dark Mechanicus forces for days on end until reinforcements arrived.) along with Section 9 Experimental Exo-suit division. What has been uncovered is only a fraction of the hidden wonders of the Vault, including but not limited too the T95000 Super Heavy Tank, Electrocutioner Tesla Tank, Mark 1 "Knight", and more. What lays hidden within the deepest parts of the Vault? Salvation or Annihilation?

Regiment: 91st Schrott Experimental Regiment
Regiment Planet: Schrott
Specialization: Salvaged, Heavily Modified, and/or Experimental Mechanized Units.

Mine were creaed mostly for a game of Only War but I have used them in a regular 40K game. I scipt the description of the various regiments hailing from those worlds. Enjoy (or not).

Zenta is a frontier world quite distant from the most civilised area of the imperium not so far of the dreaded Maelstrom zone. It is average in size and its population is of 2 billion inhabitants. The landscape has been dominated for millions of years by vast and ancient jungle, grass prairies creating seas of green and rocky mountain with small glacier on top. It is a savage planet with immense civilisation free area. Most of the population bunch in the coastal region of the southern of the two continents in small fortified cities of beautifully crafted stone buildings with roof gardens in the grassland. They survive from horticulture and fishing from the rich shallow seas. Zentics people are all pretty much vegetarian and never eat red meat. Despite the fact their city are fortified, the zentic are peaceful people and the walls are mostly in case of outsider invasion and a relic of more brutal time in the distant past of the planet human history when a cult of Khorn nearly took control of the planet. The soldiers of Zenta are another relic of that time and are known to be amongst the greatest warriors mankind ever produced outside of the Sisterhood and the Astartes.

Vartarn is an important industrial world neighbouring the Realm of Ultramar. It is the former capital of its sector, but has lost that title 260 years ago due to political gambles and local power struggle. It is of average size, but with a higher ratio of land vs. sea than most habitable planets, and its population is of around 23 billion inhabitants. Most of the population lives in vast cities of sky scraper and massive factories. Despite this, a still significant portion of the population lives in more rural area producing food from acid rain resistant crops in fields surrounding these massive cities. This allows Vartarn to be largely food independent. Very few area remain completely wild and most of them are salty marshes, struggling forest of blacken tree and arid wasteland. Vartarn rain were always acid and the vegetation on the planet was very resistant to that type of damage, but with the massive industries installed on it since its colonisation 5000 years ago, they became even harsher despite some attempt to jugulate the problem. Cities and villages all offer roofed streets to protect passerby from the rain which can cause acid burns if exposed on naked skin for more than a few minutes. It also allow forces of order to better regulate the movement of the common citizen more efficiently. Vartarn is one of the most important industrial world in the region for it supplies its sector with cogitators, heavy agricultural equipment and artillery shells. Its citizens are known to be dour, hardworking people. Their soldiers have a similar reputation.

Exors is a civilised world sitting on an important pilgrim route bordering the Ork Empire of the Archarsonist. It is a planet a little bit larger than average with a population of 12 billion inhabitants. It possess only one super-continent and most of it is covered in desert and mountain range were the temperature is blisteringly hot. Its coasts offer a much more temperate, if still a little bit arid, climate. Most the population lives in one of the great fortified cities bordering the coast. In each of these cities, massive cathedrals have been built to give pilgrims travelling toward the shrine world of Janus something to see and a place to live and rest. Taxation of these pilgrims and mundane commerce has made Exors a very rich planet despite few exportable goods despite olive oil, spices and lizard meat. Most of the planet surface is unexplored and wild. Attempt to colonise deeper inside the continent have been failures due to poor water supplies and lack of interesting resources to exploit. Exors being a good port on the pilgrim route of Janus and strategically well position planet has been threaten and attacked several times in 4000 thousand years. It also has a history of civil conflicts and local wars. This has led all cities to be fortified and to the creation of an elite defense force: the Exors Janissars.

Overgon is a recently colonized agri-world. It has been wrenched from the grasp of kroots around 500 hundreds years ago which makes it a relatively new world by the Imperium Standards. It’s of regular size and is mostly covered in vast seas. It counts a population of 300 million inhabitants living on the many shredded Islands doting the seas. Overgon seas are poor. It’s very deep and there is very few life in it. It’s on land that most of the food products come from. On these island, the largest of which makes can make up to 1000000 km², vast forest of giant mushroom grows. These mushroom are edible but too hard to be eaten easily. What is cultivated in these giant forest are a specific type of larva that eats the mushroom and provide to humans a rich source of vitamins, proteins and a highly caloric meal. Cultivating these larva can be tricky because too much of them will destroy the forest and not enough could bring the wrath of the Imperium for failing to reach quotas of exportation. Most of the population lives in cities near the coasts and uses speeders and light railways to go to plantations. Lands are dangerous because of the great variety of poisonous insects and a breed of aggressive wolverine like predator that also feeds on the larva. Cities all look like they are fortified, but their void shields are mostly to prevent the powerful winter storms to break them apart. Most of the local population feeds on the rather scarce resource of the sea to prevent overtaxing their larva production. The People of Overgon are known to be very hardy and resilient to harsh weather and conditions if not sometime a little fat, yet muscular, because of their rich diet of whale meat and other kind of large sea predator.

Trax is a civilised world that lies on the border Segmentum Pacificus and Ultima. It’s a world colonised in the aftermath of the Reign of Blood a dark time for the Imperium. It’s of average size and most of its surface is covered in seas covered with permanent icecaps. Its population of around 200 million inhabitants lives in rather small cities in the more temperate equatorial region usually close to the coast and on its numerous fjords. Trax is a mostly wild planet with immense desert like icecaps floating on its cool seas, savage mountains and deep forests. It has a rich ecosystem both on land and seas all of them beautifully adapted to live in a cold environment. Trax wild life is its primary source of exportation. High quality furs from a variety of animals, most popular being ice lynx, boxing-fox, bears, wolf, great owls and white seals, are sold at staggering price amongst the nobility of the Imperium. Because of its beautiful and massive landscape, it also attract nobles in search of a secondary residence which gives to its cities stunning building in an almost comforting architecture. Trax is a strategically important world for the Imperium and holds a Schola Progenium facility and an important convent of the order of Valorous Heart. Trax people are known to be faithful, beautiful and extremely well trained in their trade due to exceptional schooling. Of course, this includes war.

Kirda is a blasted ruin of a world that once was a thriving hive of Segmentum Ultima. It’s an ancient world colonised during the grand exodus of mankind but most of its history has been lost with the war that saw it become what it is today. 6000 years ago, Kirda fell into a massive civil war opposing its ruling cast to a mass of outcast mutants and heretics. Powerful psyker prevented any astropathic messages to be sent and the war remained largely hidden to the Imperium. In the end, weapons of mass destructions were deployed and entire hives were destroyed. When the Imperium finally realised that Kirda was under siege, it was already too late. Both side had mutually destroyed each other and from its 87 billion inhabitant, only a few hundred thousand mutants remained. Since then, Kirda is a planet of ruins. Most of its surface is a barren wasteland of concrete dominated by mountains of crumble buildings and forests of rubbles. Only the oceans seems to be alive, but then barely. With centuries without any fishing or farming and despite the deadly poison used during the war aquatic life started to recover. For 2000 years now, the ruins of Kirda are used as a vast open-sky prison for all the scums of the sector and even beyond. Vast pyramidal prison complex were build close to the seas and former hives were prisoners are assembled before being launched in the ruins to clear out the rubbles, build roads and even tend to urban gardens. It’s mostly a pointless endeavor considering the magnitude of the task and the means at their disposal. Kirdans are pessimistic people and rather cowardly, but a cornered rat can be very dangerous.

Ferucia is an ancient word colonised long before the Imperium of Mankind foundation and reclaimed by an expedition of the 13th Legion. At that time, Ferucia was a rather cold yet verdant world with large self-sustaining cities protected by ancient shielding technology. It supported a large population that was left relatively untouched by the war for compliance. Because of the presence of very advance technology, Ferucia fell under control of the Adeptus Mechanicus and became a Forge World. Its cities were turned into vast forges, its secrets studied carefully and its population turned into a vast work force. Ferucia provided the entire sector with advance weaponry like vanquisher battle tanks and manticore missile batteries. Over time, overexploitation of the planet resources, and massive industries destroyed the planet ecosystem transforming Ferucia in a cold and arid wasteland from pole to pole. 2000 years ago, the Mechanicus priesthood relinquished its control of the planet when the forges became less productive due to Tyranid invasion cutting supplies line and the presence of the encroaching Tau Empire. The main forges were moved to a nearby colonised world and Ferucia was left to the Imperium and became an extensive Industrial World which exports lots of heavy machinery and simpler weapons most notably Hydra tanks and armored sentinels. Its population continue to grow and kept a strong relationship with the Adeptus Mechanicus. Ferucians all live in millions strong massive cities. They are a grumpy and hardworking people with great preoccupation for efficiency, very attached to tradition and notably impious, preferring vastly bars and dance floor to churches.

Were I to write a back story for a sci-fi world, it'd be in "DATA EXPUNGED" and "[REDACTED]", or something along those lines, Like:

Ex-Civil World [DATA EXPUNGED], situated in one of the sixty-six star systems in sector [DATA REDACTED], to which his holy Emperor did brought salvation, whose people did turn their backs on his Emperor's infinite light, foolishly preferring the vile lies of the [DATA EXPUNGED].

By the holy wrath of the golden throne did the people of [DATA EXPUNGED] met their ends by [DATA EXPUNGED]. Recovery fleet dispatched, yet the unexpected occurrence of a [DATA EXPUNGED] left the world shattered.

Now only fragments of the planet's crust remains, held together by [REDACTED].

WARNING UNKNOWN XENO LIFEFORM IDENTIFIED, EXPEDITION FORCE DISPATCHED. PURGE THE XENO BY HIS HOLINESS' FLAME.

I mean, it's just easier to add stuffs that way; you can make way for all scenarios in a campaign, or prepare for plot twists in a novel or short story, if I were a smart individual.

The Journal and Journey of Myraer Olen, Imperial Guardsman.

For text version of 1st entry, please click to view:
Spoiler:
I have decided to keep this journal upon reaching the decision to leave my home planet and my father’s medical practice to embark in the glorious service of the Imperial Guard and the Emperor of Mankind Himself.

My name is Myraer Olen, 25 standard years old and a newly qualified surgeon. I was born in the township of Plough Bridge on the 3rd continent of the planet of Three Arbour, an agriworld in Segmentum Obscurus.

Last week when I was attending an emergency call from one of the outlying farms (a thresher-servitor malfunctioned and lacerated a worker’s arm) and while I was doing the rounds after sewing the man back together, the farm manager mentioned that word had come through that Three Arbour was to raise men at arms to join the Imperial Guard. This would be the first regimental raising our otherwise sleepy world had ever seen and many of the workers were keen to join up.

Of course, I rushed home as soon as I was able to tell my father, full of thoughts of adventure amongst the stars, comradeship in the face of the Emperors enemies and the victories won in his name. He would have none of it and forbade me from going to see the recruiters, stating my duty of care to the people of Plough Bridge, the dangers I would be exposed to if I went and how he would be unable to cope on his own if I left.

But I would have none of it, having been infected by the atmosphere that seemed to be sweeping the whole town (and, I was later to learn, the whole planet). The next day I set about settling my affairs; selling or giving away those items I would not be able to or did not want to take with me. I said goodbye to friends and family (although my father resolutely refused any attempt at communication). I contacted the recruitment office at the regional capital and registered my intent to join the Imperial Guard and arranged transport with other like minded men from Plough Bridge.

Two days later, an the very beginning of morning, I loaded my bags onto the back of a grain hauler and clambered aboard along with about 20 others, some with nothing more than the shirts on their backs, others sitting astride great piles of luggage. I slotted neatly between the two; a small bag of medical supplies, a larger bag of medical instruments, scanners and the like, and a carry-bag filled with clothes and other personal effects. We exchanged pleasantries (Plough Bridge being a relatively small town, all the men were known to me to some extent) and settled down for the journey to Bowwaggon.

I write this now as we head down the main grain haulage route into Bowwaggon. The traffic is immense, with hundreds of haulers and other vehicles all packed with men (and I note a handful of women). We shout across to each other as the trucks pass one another. The mood is light, exuberant even. Everyone is young and smiling. Even after two nights sleeping rough and two days of riding out in the open I can’t help but be energised by the atmosphere.

Chard

Crasau is a death world under control by the Imperium of Man. It's incredibly slow rotation and airless surface means one half of the surface becomes so hot that small pools of lava form, sometimes coalescing to form huge lakes of red hot magma, and revealing the vast deposits of adamantium. The other half of the planet becomes cold enough to kill even an unprotected space marine in seconds. A city goes around the planet in a vast ring, where the star is low enough that the temperatures reach a habitable zone. Huge tracks slowly move the city with the planet, keeping the city cool. There is almost no variation in the classes of the planet, and the current Governor of the planet has a reputation for selflessness. It's precious product means extensive fortifications both without and within the city impose themselves on any potential invader. Under the protection of the chapter planet of the Imperial Jesters, which is located in the same system, the planet is constantly protected by the well equipped chapter. Squadrons of marines are on constant standby, ready to deploy by drop pod should any of the huge mining rigs come under attack, while elements of the planets pdf have access to linked teleporters should reinforcements be required. The miners do not venture into the dark side of the planet after the constant disappearances of both rigs and the marine forces sent to help. No evidence of what causes this disappearances has ever been found, with life not existing on even a cellular level. Many theories have been put forward. That it may be the foul acts of Chaos was discounted after intensive psychic scanning by a Inquisitorial investigation. That the planet might be a dreaded tomb world was soon forgotten when a particularly amiable Necron Dynasty confirmed it was no planet of theirs. The mystery of the dark side of the planet remains unknown.

The relationship between marine and human is closer than is normally observed, with marines actually assisting in the training of pdf soilders. This has resulted in the planets pdf being better trained than most guard regiments throughout the galaxy, and companies from Crasau are highly sought after by imperial commanders. The attitude of Crasau is akin to the years of the Great Crusade. While the Emperor is venerated, he is not seen as a god as such, causing a terrible relationship with the Ecclesiarcy. There is no doubt in the loyalty of Crasau so the Inquisition tolerates this behaviour, but the has not stopped attacks by the Ecclesiarcy, including an unsuccessful attack by a joint force of battle sisters and a full regiment of zealous Imperial Guard. Strangely this has resulted in a force of marines and guardsmen who are particularly effective against other guard regiments, and are often deployed against rebellious factions in the Imperium.

Really like some of the ones written here, probably gonna use them in my games

Schrott

I remembered a planet I had made for an Apoc match/campaign that never materialized.

The planet of Cyclona is a planet approximately the same size of the Solar Systems Neptune. Its population is rougthly 4 billion, it is a Gas Giant with a solid core comprised of rock and vast quantities of liquid Incendium, a compound that is used as a high power fuel and component of flame weapon ammunition that is unique to the planet. The surface around the rocky core like other gas giants is under an immense amount of pressure from the surrounding gases, so much so not even mighty Terminator Armor could stand up to the pressures. However there is a habitable zone in upper atmosphere were humans can live without augmentation or breathing apparatus. The Gases below this habitable layer are so thick that a structure if built correctly can "float" on the gases like a ship in the ocean. Cities have been constructed to float on this planet revolving around the vast drilling platforms that probe the core for the valuable Incendium. The platforms have vast pathways and gantries where their drilling equipment roams about. The planet has recent come under siege by the Ork WAAAGH!!! SkulBlasta. The local PDF and civilians who live the floating platforms fear the Orks insane mannerisms could sink the platforms and kill everyone! Imperial Guard forces and a Space Marine Chapter (who no longer goes to the store I play at, I can't remember his chapters name) to protect the planet and keep the Incendium flowing to the Imperium insatiable war machine.

My Space Marine homeworld:

Dalrais:

Segmentum Solar

Date rediscovered: M39

Affiliation: Imperium of Man

Pop: 4.500.000.000

Classification: Civilized World

Fluff:

Orbiting a single main sequence star in the middle of the habitable zone the world of Dalrais is a prime example of a terrestrial world inhabitable by humans. It features a Oxygen-Nitrogen atmosphere with trace amounts of other elements. It has a dense iron core, a oxygen rich crust and has ample amounts of copper, silicon and iron. Dalrais has an incredible variety of biomes from the equatorial jungles, large deserts, lush forests and freezing Boreal Tundras. It has three large continents and is ~75% covered in water.

Dalrais's people are as varied as it's environment. There are many different cultures and languages though typically educated people know at least a functional level of low-gothic. The world is divided up in around 90 different provinces run by it's own administrator. There is a church to the Emperor in every major city. Often these churches are the most prominent buildings in these cities. This variation in the people of Dalrais leaves the Astartes of the Knights Resolute a diverse bunch. The teaching of High and Low Gothic to prospective Astartes is one of the first lessons given to these recruits.

The world is run in a very "Hands-Off" manner and often each province is left to run itself. Relatively speaking, of course. In the interest of preventing the spread of Chaos and searching for Psykers the world's government has a secret police that closely monitors the activities of every citizen. It is said that one in three of the population are informants for the secret police. In addition, around 5% of the world's children are tithed to the Knights Resolute to either undergo the trials of becoming an Astartes or to become a Chapter Serf. Some groups view the tithe as a great honor while other people dislike the taking of their children greatly. Either way, they have no choice.

Technologically, Dalrais is quite varied as well. Some cities benefit from tens of thousands of years of development while others still use thatch in their roofing.

The world's most prominent structure is the Knights Resolute's chapter monastery, called "The Reckoning", which is built in the middle of a vast desert. It is built into the side of a huge Mesa with much of the structure being underground.

Cenozoic Era

Ebony:

A relatively recent discovery, the planet Ebony is a small Death World located in the Segmentum Pacificus. A once extremely volcanically-active world, the planet has long since cooled into a surface of sheer obsidian which has been polished to a near glass-like finish due to the high strength windstorms that regularly sweep across its surface. Plant and animal life is non-existent on the surface of Ebony, only spires of obsidian and endless “lakes” of polished black glass may be found, dotted by impact craters that scatter fragments of obsidian across the landscape. The windstorms pick up the razor sharp shards, turning the high winds into deadly gales that threaten to flay any unprotected creature.

Beneath the obsidian surface, massive deposits of diamonds may be found throughout the planet, and interestingly an extensive network of caverns and tunnels often stretch alongside these deposits. Some of the caverns appear to be natural formations, created as the volcanic activity on the planet subsided. However, several Explorators that have made initial investigations of the planet believe that some, or perhaps all, of the tunnels were artificially constructed, though no direct evidence has been found and there is no record of any civilization, whether human or Xenos, ever existing on the planet.

The planet is officially uninhabited, however, occasional bands of outlaw miners or smugglers land on the world, tempted by the abundance of industrial grade diamonds available for the bold, or foolish, to take at will. Stories of miners making a single trip to Ebony and returning with enough wealth to rival the greatest of Rogue Trading houses abound through much of the Segmentum Pacificus. When pressed however, no one has actually been able to clearly locate or identify one of these miners. In reality, the few mining groups that have been officially identified as travelling to Ebony have never returned. Other rumors are whispered of powerful entities that reside within the depths of the Ebony tunnels, waiting to reward those brave and faithful enough to seek them out. The Inquisition has begun to collect multiple reports of a “Cult of the Trinitites” and pilgrims seeking, and perhaps making, travel to Ebony. Nothing at this time has been confirmed and the Imperium has yet to take any official position on or action with the dark world of Ebony.

The Last Chancer Who Survived

United Kingdom

Planet Name: Kar'vahoth
Imperial Records: Non-Existant
Planetary Status: Daemon World, ruled by the Daemon Prince Be'lakor
Population: In excess of 10,000,000,000 humans.

Kar'vahoth is a world subject to constant change, and habitable to humans, by the will of Be'lakor. One traitorous Inquisitor picked up a regular supply of armies from this world, formed into regiments that call themselves "Landsharks". They often see action to the Imperium's favour, and once attached the 293rd Landsharks to a crusade led by Commissar Yarrick. They have confusing relations with the Ultramarines Chapter.

The planet is comprised mainly of harsh wastelands and enormous hive cities, and the population worships Be'lakor. They suffer surprisingly little mutation, as the age-old daemon keeps his planet shielded from the four major chaos powers.
Manifestations of Be'lakor are quite common among the psyker population. These take the form of minor mutations, and temporary manifestations of great powers. It is not unknown for Be'lakor himself to bring himself to battle through his followers from this world, but only in a weakened state, in form almost as lowly as a normal Daemon Prince. The manifestation does not maintain itself very well, and is only a fraction of his true power, but when it is sent back to the warp, Be'lakor is not fully banished in the same manner as normal daemons. Be'lakor uses this world primarily to experiment with his powers, in an attempt to form his own lesser daemons, so as not to rely on the very gods he intends to overthrow.

"Ah, home. Everything moves like a dream. None of this boring crap." - Sgt Venerot, shortly before being executed by one of his planet's own form of Commissars, for saying too much and risking Imperial suspicion.

I developed a homeworld for my custom marine chapter I worked on some time ago. I'll post the homeworld bit I had written up below.
Spoiler:

The system of Tenebris is marked by a single massive asteroid belt. The vast expanse of the rocky space would cover the expanse between Holy Terra and Mars. Human civilization is confined to small asteroid mining colonies built in the immense rocks themselves.

The system was initially settled during mankind’s great stellar exodus during the Dark Age of Technology due to its vast wealth of mineral deposits that fed the great manufactorums on various nearby forge worlds. Isolated during the Age of Strife by a series of warp storms, the citizens of Tenebris were left to their own devices for millennia. The nearby warp storms would sporadically spawn terrible spacefaring beasts of the swirling etherium of chaos. The periodic chaotic invasions of the system further fostered a feeling of isolationism and survival in the remaining colonists. Rarely banding together to fight off a common foe, each individual colony would test their own mettle, often leading to the complete annihilation of a station at the hands of the warp spawns. These abandoned stations would be occupied by other gangs and cartels from neighbouring stations, perpetuating the cycle. The colonists and their respective cartels, gangs, and organizations survived on whatever they could salvage. Water would be recycled as best as possible, and ice extracted from passing comets. Vast arrays of nutrient slime facilities and hydroponics kept the colonists alive, but not much more.

Communication was difficult and only the bravest and most skilled pilots could navigate the ever changing routes to each colony, limiting trade. The occasional warp storm and chaos raid further impeded movement between stations and colonies. The greatest of beasts that spawned from the storm were recorded in the histories of each station, the tales of heroes and brave men fighting in the void and in the station proper to fend of these mighty spawns of chaos were passed down from generation to generation. The great beasts were simply referred to as the void wyverns amongst the disparate mining colonies.

The constant struggle for survival and internecine conflict kept the population stable, though life was difficult in the confined spaces of the colonies. None of this changed with the arrival of the space marines that would adopt the name of the great creatures. The arrival of the Void Wyverns chapter brought a degree of wealth to the system, though little trickled down to the labourers in the mines. The citizens proved to be great candidates for space marines, particularly those young and brave pilots that flew through the belt to assist in cartel raids against opposing cartels in hit and run attacks. These young candidates were not only excellent pilots at a young age, but showed a ruthlessness and loyalty that was particularly prized.

The Void Wyverns would call a gathering of all the current leaders of each station in order to announce a great competition, pitting the best youth from every colony in a struggle to win the favour of the Void Wyverns and become a neophyte. Testing all aspects of life in the belt, the aspirants would demonstrate their best piloting skills, their finest survival skills in the harsh environment of the void, and would display their combat skills throughout the competition to ensure only the strongest and most able survived. Those that did, perhaps several dozen of a few thousand would be inducted as neophytes, of which even less would receive the honour of becoming battle-brothers. Those that failed in their trials as a neophyte would become servitors or crew members aboard the Void Wyvern’s fleet.

Its far from perfect, but I like the general idea. I'll have to revisit it some day.

As for my Guard, well I play an official regiment, and as far as I'm concerned, Mordian is the best 40k world.

Talis (formerly Yarak IV) is a former Hive World located in the Halian Reach of the Tamahl Sector of the Segmentum Obscurus. Its local star is named Yarak, and the planet is orbited by two moons (Mass'hild and Siggs'hild). It was, previously, a Hive World of some 31.5 billion people, until the infiltration by agents of the Ruinous Powers a thousand years ago resulted in a full-scale nuclear war between the Hive Cities, destroying the world in an event known as the Nights of Fire. This, however, was not the end-goal of these cultists, but instead a last-ditch attempt to destroy the world utterly, rather than allow it to be recaptured by the Emperor's armies, which were lead by seven Imperial Saints who had mysteriously arrived (some say descended from the stars, while others maintain they were natives to the world).

Now, the survivors eke out a living in the irradiated wastelands of the planet, broken into a series of squabbling city-states, nations and tribes. The people of Talis, in keeping with the legends of the time before the Nights of Fire, venerate the God-Emperor of Mankind through one of several Imperial Saints who are believed to have walked upon Talis during the war that culminated in the near-destruction of the world. These seven saints are each in possession of one or more cults dedicated to them, though many of the cults do not get along with other cults, with relationships ranging from coolly neutral to outright hostility.

Furthermore, the various pillars of Imperial society have also broken apart into a number of factions. The goals and purpose of the Adeptus Mechanicus is now driven by four separate Machine Cults, while the forces of the Departmento Munitorum have broken apart into a number of mercenary armies, collectively called Cults of War. Apart from these, many Tactical Sects serve the Machine Cults, exchanging military force for medical care, cybernetics, and the best in military-grade hardware the Forges can produce.

A fifth Machine Cult, the Gunrunners, is maintained by a Squat enclave, the descendants of a Squat Trade Union present on Talis since before the War of Seven Saints. The Gunrunners produce the finest in personal defense weaponry available in the Wastelands, but their prices, and the paranoia by which they guard the secrets of their manufacturing process, indicates that they intend to keep it that way.

The Saints of Talis are seven in number, and the landscape is dotted with monuments and shrines dedicated to one or another of them, both of pre and post-war construction. These saints are Apollo N'bu (the Herald), Ibrahim Nirgali (the Saint of War), Inanna As'Ishtar (the Saint of Passion, in both Love and War), Kurios Merodach (Saint of Wisdom and Knowledge), Ninurta Adar (the Huntress), Seskin Anna'suen (the Saint of Careful Planning) and Shamm Ashutu (the Saint of Law and Justice). The faithful adhere to a book, penned by the hand of Saint Inanna As'Ishtar following the Nights of Fire prior to her martyring in 3 AF, which states that the Saints will return to Talis when commanded by the Emperor, when the starts of the heavens align in their proper places, and the wheel of ages turns once more.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
