My wife kindly agreed to get involved. We played the first mission in the O:I book. She won the first game...

We then jumbled up the scenery to match the intro page/box contents set up and had another go. I won that one. Really enjoyed it, and so did she!

Mrs Monders' thought it flowed better than other systems I've had her try, and made more sense. She didn't agree that one wound should be one wound though. She reckons you should take one wound, then the next one kills you.

It seems people do die pretty easily though, so perhaps where getting something very basic very wrong. Saying that, when you DO make a save, it feels great!

We had a go at CC, but the O:I book doesn't cover that too well. We ended up rolling the PH stat, and if you failed you got murdered.

You got it mostly right, but Mrs Monders was actually correct about wounds. When you get to zero wounds you aren't removed immediately, you enter the 'Unconscious' state, and Doctors and Medkits (or Engineers in the case of Remotes and TAGs) can bring them back into play; if you take more wounds once you're dead, though, you are killed all the way. I believe Unconsciousness and Doctor shows up in the last Icestorm scenario since you've got the Reverend Healer coming into play but in the full game unconscious models also enter the Prone state (so their silhouette becomes just the base instead of the whole marker) and are a little harder to shoot as a result. In melee you need to spend another order on the Coup de Grace action to auto-kill a down model.

Models do die pretty easily; cover is extremely critical to the game and even then Infinity is frequently short and very violent, but armies with access to good doctors and engineers can be difficult to actually kill.

CC is fairly straightforward since it's not usually a big influence on the outcome of the game, none of the rules that influence it (Berserk, Martial Arts, unusual melee weapons...) are in the introductory game so there's a little more to it when CC-oriented troops get into the fight in the full game.

Hey, getting shot really ruins your day. That's why I like Infinity.

You're right about the O:I close combat rules, it's just the basics; 75% of the rules and 98% of the weapons aren't in it.

I think I had a go at close combat in mission 2 and got stabbed in the neck for my efforts. Not in a hurry to try that again...

My only attempt at CC in Icestorm involved my Akal getting beaten up by an Alguacil, wasn't eager to repeat it; since then I have had better experiences (Kusanagi and a Spektr double-teaming an Oniwaban and decapitating him with a Shock weapon is a story I will tell over and over again) but CC is always a risky tactic.

AH OK, I get the wound process now. I can't WAIT to tell her she was right and I was... misinformed.

I'll be sure to swerve CC wherever possible!

Hoping to get the next two minis built this week ready for this weekend. I'll read through the PDF rulebook too, get more clued up.

Effectively you were both right, as unless you're playing with medics/doctors there's functionally no difference between unconscious and dead.

There's a big difference even without medics
Some missions might require some specific actions to be taken against enemy models (for instance, it's easier to Forward Observe a guy lying bleeding on the ground that someone shooting back at you)
You can't shoot templates in a way that would hit a friendly model, included unconscious ones

Also, knowing that the hero of the game (who single-handedly shot down several opponents and carried the day) is lying just wounded, and may survive should medics get to him after the battle, rather than dead
