So I had my second match yesterday with my Nomads vs. Aleph. My opponent placed a remote with a total reaction HMG on a rooftop in his deployment zone. This essentially locked down the whole board. It was so devastating. Any action would provoke B4 ARO's. Im sure this is part of the learning curve, but I thought I would seek out some advice on counters.

Camouflage (universal answer to everything), TO camouflage, ODD, infiltrator (these will typically have camouflage) and run into TR REM 0/-3 MOD range, smoke/MSV2 shot through it (Jaguar/Intruder), you have options as Nomad.

Beyond the Beltway

Cautious Movement. Smoke. Direct Template Weapons. Or coordinated movement so the TR remote must divide its burst. But engage the thing outside of its favorite range band. Hackers and repeaters.

Also, Snipers. Engage the thing from the 32"+ range ( -3 for the HMG) while in partial cover (another -3). That is -6 to its BS. If you use a Spektr with TO camo, that is another -6. So the TR remote cannot hit. Its BS=11 and the BS modifier is -12. Let it try and dodge with that PH=7 ( it gets a -3 for being a remote). The Spektr is BS=12, and will get +3 for range, and -3 for the Remote being in partial cover. If you can infiltrate the Spektr or move it to a point where it can deny the remote cover, even better. Now, you have 2 dice needing 12 (or 15) to its 1 die needing a 7. You will do at least 1 wound 56% of the time. . Finally, If you use the surprise shot, you will impose a further -3 to the dodge, meaning it needs a 4 or less, and do at least 1 wound ~58% of the time.

Just a point, if he's positioning one model on a high building and you're eating an ARO with every order, something doesn't sound right.

Either that building is very tall in relation to others, or you don't have a whole lot of LOS blocking terrain to begin with. If it's the former, simply house rule it so you can't deploy on it (including with AD if the roof is big enough). If it's the latter, get more terrain.

One model on a tall building should be generating tha tmany ARO shots.

If that one piece of terrain is a problem, don't put it in deployment zones. Or bring a high-WIP Lieutenant and choose Deployment.

You can't split Burst in reaction, so it's an even better counter than expected.

This is great, huge help guys. I think coordinated movement is exactly what I needed :(

Oops. I've never done it, so I never even thought to look if it was permitted or not permitted. Definitely much better. It is worth a command token for certain.

This post highlights a point about the game that is not readily apparent to new players - you win shootouts by forcing unfavorable engagements, which is done by stacking modifiers for range, cover, camo and burst against your opponent.

It comes back to the range quote, "just because you can rifle someone from across the table doesn't mean you should..."

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.
