Hi All,

I posted this guy up in my Painting and Modelling blog (which is a whole different story) but I have taken on the idea of painting each of Forgeworlds Primarchs as a gift to my Brother. He is a collector not a gamer, but loves the GW background, so I feel these are fitting model.

So this here is the finished Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines and my first one finished (I am planning him ad Horus as the start of the gift for this Christmas).

So without further adieu, here he is.........

He was on the upper limit of what I can do with a paint brush and am glad I am well into my Army plan so have had a lot of painting under my belt in the last couple of years. But it is a glorious model and Horus looks even better. Hope to update this thread with him before the end of the year.

Thanks for reading and I welcome any feedback.

Very nice I really like the marbled effect and great attention to detail on all the power armor details. Great work. Thanks for sharing.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Said it on your blog, but as it was I that suggested you post him up here, then I'll reiterate, fantastic work! The colours definitely have that elusive 'pop', and what's more, the whole piece with the base and the mini just looks very coherent.

Looking forward to Horus...

I have a basic tutorial on my main plog where I did the steps on a flat piece of plastic. Didn't work as well as on the base (think the shape and angles help a lot). Feel free to look there (page 15 right near the top).

Short version: start with white, stipple on three greys going from light to dark, maybe white again if it looks too uniform. Then fine lines of the dark grey with a white highlight running down one edge. Gloss varnish if you want to give it that polished look. Much better painters than I have added a couple of fantastic ideas after it as well which are worth a read.

He looks great like that, and like others have said, you really nailed the marble.

The one thing I could comment on is the cloak look a bit flat, and blend to much with the white marble.
That could just be the pictures/light though.

I would have liked to see him with a deep red cloak, but the paralel to ancient rome would then imply he is the emperor, so perhaps not

I did actually battle with the colour of the cloak, going from the idea of red or purple and then my Wife got involved and it ended up white.

The photos are a little over exposed (I suck at photography) and the cloak and marble has ended up blending together a tad (the marble is a little grayer in person).

But I won't use that as any excuse, I had a really hard time trying to get any sort of shading into the white cloak and was very happy I got a nice smooth and consistent finish at all, so took the brave step to just leave it as is. Believe me, I won't be choosing a white cape on such a large chunk of white stone anytime soon. Horus is going to have a deep red cloak because we all know he should have been Emperor anyway.........

Hi all,

Raising this thread again as I have finished the 3rd installment to my Brother's ongoing gift. This time I have completed the Primarch of the Raven Guard this time. Corvus Corax.

I am really happy with how he came out. I was a little suss halfway through as I felt he was pretty monochrome and I felt that led him to looking a little messy. Enter my Wife and her crazy ideas and I ended up going off reservation and added a little colour to him and I like how it turned out. There is in fact a little blue to his armour which I felt led to the wings demonstrating a much more blue hue than I originally intended. But hey I think he works.

The Son of Horus probably could have been darker green, but I liked the brighter look since Corax is so dark.

Plan to have Fulgrim done by the end of this coming week (as my attention is going to shift to the Knight Errants). So hope to be able to ship them off to my Brother really soon (only a couple of weeks late for his birthday.....)

Thanks for looking and welcome your thoughts.

So I have now finished the 4th Primarch in this project. Fulgrim the Phoenician, Leader of the Emperor's Children:

I think it is the best base I have done for the Primarch's thus far. Really happy with the Iron Hand casualty and stoked by the free hand Symbol. I intentionally kept the base and casualties very muted so that Fulgrim looked spotless and free from the grime of war as befits his status as head of the most perfect Legion.

Overall I am pretty happy with the end result. Although he has so much gold on him I feel it retracts from the purple of the armour a little too much. But them's the breaks. I like the distinction between the white hair and the white tassel's (? are they called that?) which I did by basing the hair on blue rather than brown/black I used for the straps.

So I am going to be focusing on some Bretonnians next so it may be a little while before the next Primarch appears, but it will either be Vulkan or Angron depending on which gets done first.

Thanks for reading and let me know your thoughts.

I think you're ramping up the quality as you go (and it was pretty good with Guilleman!). Corax's wings in particular are so well executed. At this rate, your final Primarch's going to be off the scale.

Hi all, me again. This time around I present Vulkan, Lord of the Salamanders and to date my favourite Primarch model to paint. Really enjoyed him from beginning to end.

The vibrant green of the armour I think works well with the gold work and helps the skull show up quite well.

I tried to keep the hammer fairly simple as I see it more as a tool than a weapon of war and the Salamaders strike me as more practical than say the Blood Angels. His pistol, like just about all the other Primarchs is well hidden by his cloak.

The cloak gave me a lot of trouble (or at least the outside I am super happy with the tones on the inside). But with a lot of advice I think I figured out a good end result for it. Was hard to have a green cloak and green armour without it all blending together too much.

I did debate about painting the flames (in particular the ones above his head) as real flames, but deciding I risked it looking too cartoony and not practical especially as there is no "source" for the flames to be coming from.

Something I haven't done before is give a sense of scale of the Primarchs (apart from the casualties on the bases). But here is Vulkan standing next to a Salamanders Captain. Massive difference.....

My favourite base to date (although the photo is a little more washed out than I had hoped). In particular I think I nailed the Death Guard colours. I had originally intended to only have Salamaders on the base, but decided I needed a contrast so one became a Death Guard.

Here is Vulkan on his display base. It all fits together really well in construction and they even have a little spot to install magnets in the design. Very clever.

I didn't have the render on the walls initially. So, so glad my wife said I needed to add something as otherwise it would have been too grey.

I like how the skull pops compared to the rest of the colours and provides a focus to the very top of the model.

I really do get the feeling he has barged his way through a wall. I really enjoyed this model,

So there we have my fifth Primarch. Now I need to get Angron on the move so I can ship the two of them to my brother for Christmas and then I have no idea which ones I will do next. Although I really liked the look of Leman Russ who has just been released.

Thanks for reading.

So just in time for Christmas I have finished the 6th of the Primarchs. Angron, Lord of the World Eaters and lunatic butcher.

So I am pretty happy with the end result. Especially the cloak. But what started as some real enthusiasm for the little guy (and he is check out my blog for a comparison shot with Vulkan) I started to be over the colour scheme pretty quickly. But I have managed to finish him off and am happy to have him stand next to his brothers. Although he and Vulkan are about to be dumped in the post and my fingers are crossed they travel ok.

Not sure which two I will do next. But I am intrigued by Perturbo as I know next to nothing about him.

I have chosen to stick fairly close (well as close as my painting skills can) to the "studio schemes" this far with the primarchs. So that is why Horus got the black armour.

I have never read a description as to why they present him in the black and am not sure I have read any of the books that clearly outline it either. Besides I think the Luna wolves white would have gotten lost on the base (and I did it first......)

Very nice indeed! My only criticism would be that the colour on the base is very similar similar to the armour so the lower parts of the model get a little lost.

Other than that though, excellent stuff!

I totally agree with you on the base, but I didn't really have any ideas on how to change it without totally reworking it. I do kind of like it from the point of view that Leman Russ is a killer and warrior so he isn't as concerned with standing out among the crowd as say Fulgrim is. But, any ideas you have I am happy to think about.
