Erfworld
Going stronger than it was a couple of years ago. Their current artist seems to be able to pump out strips at a good rate. I never got into the idea that a web comic should be a novel split into short chapters.
The Order Of The Stick
Rich Burlew is a one man band and all of his strips are excellent. Overall I prefer quality to quantity. This is the best webcomic ever, IMO.
Battlepug
Pretty reliable. It seems to be approaching the climax of the story.
Galaxion
It grinds along at the same old fairly slow pace. I am still unconvinced that it really benefitted by changing to colour.
Oglaf (NSFW)
The apprentice needs to come back.
Goblins
I have always enjoyed this. The artist had a bit of a nervous breakdown a couple of years ago, but the strip seems to be getting back into its stride now.
That's all I bother to follow these days. There are various titles that I have given up or just finished publication in one way or another, like Turn Signals On A Land Raider, Penny Arcade, and Dalek Second Empire.
Do you guys have any recommendations?

I'm religious followers of Erfworld and OOTS. My two absolute favorites.
I started reading Schlock Mercenary about 6 years ago, when I picked up John Ringo's "Live Free Or Die". I'm still amazed that he's about 16 years into the comic, with daily updates, and has never missed an update. The story is starting to get a bit cumbersome though. I'm just having a hard time with keeping up with it.
I follow both Ctrl Alt Delete and Penny Arcade as well. PA has been losing me a bit though.
Used to read MA3, and its spin offs, but just stopped a few months ago. All three story lines were pretty much becoming nothing more then lets see how homosexual can we get, and that just doesn't float my boat.
Looking For Group used to be fun, but like Schlock, the story has just gotten way to cumbersome for me to follow anymore. When I realized I was only reading it anymore to see if Richard did anything funny, I decided it wasn't worth the time anymore.

I have quite a few on my list
Manly Guys Doing Manly Things
All the super macho action-heroes from various video games and movies, or more accurately a temp agency for them. Very funny.
Scandinavia and the World
Anthropomorphised countries (with the main cast being the Scandinavian ones) interacting, with various references to stereotypes, politics, and world events.
Awkward Zombie
Jokes about video games (mostly Nintendo), pretty funny. Sort of sitcom-ish.
Romanticaly Apocalyptic
The absolutely beautifully illustrated adventures of the last sane man left after the Apocalypse (and his interactions with all the mad ones). The begining is pretty random humor, but itt get a mroe focused story later on. And, I must stress, the art is gorgeous. It's a combo of drawn art, CG and green-screen. Also has audiologs that come with some comics.
Cut Time
A webcomic that is really just starting (only 54 pages in), but really good art, and interesting characters and story so far.
Let's Speak English
The (real) adventures of an American-born English teacher living in Japan. Cute and funny. The author is moving back to America after this school year (whenever that is in Japan) so it'll be ending, however she will continue to make some of them, and she does other comics as well.
Three Panel Soul
Sort of hard to describe. There are a few different story-lines going on at once. Really good art, funny, interesting.
Grrl Power
A comic nerd gets superpowers. Takes a lot of looks at super-hero tropes and suchlike. Very fanservice-y (both cheesecake and beefcake).
Hark, a vagrant
Jokes about history (mostly). Pretty funny.
I am ARG
A webcomic (and occasionally cartoon) about anything from daily life to regular inane humor. Quite crass, but very funny.

Regarding Oglaf- About ready for the apprentice to come back myself, although I think the artist/writer mentioned somewhere just losing interest in that type of ongoing story.
asofterworld is one of my favorites.
Perry Bible Fellowship is another.
Followed Penny Arcade for quite a while, and still do.
Girl Genius, but I haven't checked on it in years.
Lackadaisy is another I haven't checked up on in a long time.
Cyanide and Happiness.
Gone with the Blastwave
I've forgotten so many I used to follow religiously...

Crossed: Wish You Were Here is still available totally free online. To me, it's one of the overall best horror comics in recent history.
Haven't seen anything new in awhile though. Crossed: DOA was pretty meh.
Should point out it's not a lighthearted series and is definitely not for everyone.

Read through the first five chapters myself, but wasn't a big fan. Didn't feel any attachment for the characters, and after awhile the premise just seemed too ridiculous for me to suspend my disbelief.

Well it's firmly in the zombie camp, so the premise is by definition ridiculous, but I find it actually terrifying. I'm a huge fan of the series in general though. I mean it starts with a man raping a dolphin to death. That will make a small percentage of people enjoy it right there, but admittedly pretty small.
Shaky (the main protagonist) really isn't easy to like. He's a manipulative coward. But I find that refreshing in a world where everything has truly gone to gak.
I think especially towards some of the later chapters it makes survival horror truly horrible, but totally get why some people would be meh. Spurrier kinda has that reputation of you like him or hate him.

All three are visually beautiful and have a unique art style, that I honestly can say have made some pages just really cool to look at much less read. Though the story is great for all three. Though no matter what OOTS will all ways be my favorite web comic of all time.

Yeah, the artwork just doesn't work for me most days, and it seems they aren't trying to do much meaningful. It's more about shock value now.

I love love love Order of the Stick. It's the only one I have in dead tree format - I've got them all, hopped on the reprint Kickstarter Rich ran and ended up with a copy of War and XPs that has a little Belkar doodle on the first page. Can't wait to see where the story ends up, it's easily my favorite webcomic.
Erfworld's also great, I'm so glad Xin came back to the project. The premise, the art, the jokes, the half-text-story, half-comic presentation...they're all gold. I badly want some manner of Erfworld game.
Speaking of games, I'm surprised no one's mentioned this one yet - Eagle Ordinary, based on a group's Only War campaign. Holt is a Commissar's Commissar, and the scene where Lt. Brinton finds the sniper is...about as Penal Legion as you can get. Still young, but the art and writing are all very promising, and it's a great take on 40k.
Dr. McNinja is also on my list of favorites - again, a little surprised not to see this one up here yet. It's ridiculous, in a fun, Deadpool-style way (the guy behind it actually works on Deadpool and Gwenpool-related stuff!), and I'm sorry to say that it's wrapping things up and ending soon - but all indications are that the ending is going to be fantastic.
XKCD is fun. I used to check it pretty religiously, but I've slipped a little on that. Still good for a quick laugh or a moment that makes me think.
Goblins is an old favorite, the first webcomic I ever read, and I'm glad Thunt is still working on it. It can be a little clumsy or awkward sometimes, but the premise and world are a lot of fun, it's imaginative as all hell, and holy crap, the dungeons. Pure old-school D&D madness. Mr. Fingers is one of the most terrifying monsters I've ever seen.
Girl Genius is fantastic, apart from the pacing. Every now and then I need to go back and do an archive binge to remember what the hell is supposed to be happening, and at this point, there's SO MUCH to read through...but on the other hand, it has Bangladesh Dupree.
I still enjoy Penny Arcade - maybe not as good as it has been, but there's still some good jokes, and it's one I'll remember to check on MWF.
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is a little bit hit or miss for me - but the hits are gold. I still joke about the Cat Translator comic.
Cyanide and Happiness is a bit of an odd one for me. I'll forget to check it, then I'll binge and laugh and laugh and laugh...they're doing a guest comic bit now. Some of the guests appear to have confused it with Depressing Comic Week.
It's not... technically a webcomic, but it is about comics, and it's on the web...so I'll just mention that I follow the Comics Curmudgeon here. Without him, I would never have known the joyful, whimsical insanity Heathcliff has descended into, or fully explored the ways in which Funky Winkerbean is more depressing than 40k.

Me. Too. This is the only one I look at even semi-regularly for it's own content. I wind up reading Order of the Stick only because I go there for the RPG & Homebrew forums, which can be pretty solid. I honestly kind of hate every one of the main cast and certainly wouldn't read it on its own merits.

Just about anybody in the tech industry should be familiar with UserFriendly. There haven't been any new strips in years, as the creator lost a family member (possibly a second one nearly immediately afterwards, I don't really remember too well), and basically decided there were more important things he wanted to do. The entire archive is still available, though.

I read Least I Could Do and Looking For Group pretty regularly. I'm a big fan of The Whiteboard, but the sarcasm/paintball humor scratches an itch I don't find elsewhere.
Table Titans and Penny Arcade are great nerd fodder, worth the time to read. PowerNap is also excellent, being about sleep deprivation and becoming a super hero, but updates very, very rarely. Broodhollow by Kris Straub of Chainsaw suit is a creepy storyline I like a lot, but he seems to be dragging creating it. Worth reading the back issues, has a Cthulhu feel.
I have to admit, I miss Girls with Slingshots. Didn't think I'd like it, ended up loving it.

So, rather than “The State of the Webcomics World”, this thread should be “List your favorite webcomics”.
And nobody mentioned the Unspeakable Vault of Doom yet? The UVoD is one of the best Lovecraft-mythos oriented webcomics-oriented webcomic, if not the best.
http://www.goominet.com/unspeakable-vault-of-doom/archives/
Also, a great continuation of Dragon Ball, with a big tournament between a bunch of parallel universe, just to bring in cool new take on already existing characters, with really good drawings, Dragon Ball Multiverse:
http://www.dragonball-multiverse.com/en/chapters.html
It is like one big huge pile of fanservice (but not the sexy stuff fanservice, rather the “I always wanted to see those two super-powerful characters fighting the crap out of each other kind”).
Funny thing is that both those comics are from French authors, but DBM is translated into English and a dozen other languages, and UVoD is even written in English by the French author and |i]then[/i] translated in French by a translator ^^.
