LOOK AT THOSE RULES!

Particularly the Peltasts. They are basically Skitarii Sternguard, they lack the ability to take special weapons BUT who needs those when each trooper HAS THREE with him!

My opinion:

1. These are way way under priced. (points wise, the models are going to cost me a kidney)
2. They are basically a must take for me (I don't care for the other elite choices, so these plug a hole in my lists)
3. The ability to take 20 of them in a unit? ludicrous.
4. Need 80 Shreding S3 to scrub out a tarpit? Or maybe 20 AP5 Ignores cover blasts? Or perhaps you need an entire unit of MEQs reduced to smoking husks? How about all 3. From the same unit.
5. They have rending. I have no words.
6. All in all, GG forgeworld. I now hate and love these.

Praise be to Dark Sphere savior of cheapskates!

So?
10 Skitarii Vanguard with a way to get rending (E.G Misfortune) can wipe out FERRUS MANUS in a turn

But the cheapest you can get that, reliably, is just slightly under 400 pts including a conclave. 130 and unhindered by psykers is a Big Deal. Stick these guys in a bastion, or Emprah forfend, a Stormlord and the giggles will be endless.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

Its Skitarii. I am not really surprised, especially after seeing how many army wide buffs they can get a turn.

Best-case scenario (under Binharic Omniscience for BS7) I'm getting 21 Vanguard with Rending to wipe Ferrus in a turn. Are you sure you factored his 3++ into your math?

(Under the same circumstances (Binharic Omniscience and Misfortune on Ferrus) that'd only take 16 Peltasts, but that's 202pts compared to 219pts of Vanguards (who have 20pts more sergeant tax to deal with the way the squad size works out)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just pitted the Peltasts against a couple of arbitrary power-small-arms units out of curiosity. Their offensive price-performance came out solid but within normal parameters against Dire Avengers and Fire Warriors.

I like that Parabolic Shot rule though. It'd be nice if Grenade Launchers for IG got that.

Otherwise I'm mostly seeing reasons for good old fashioned AP 4 weapons.

Once again, a weapon, rule, ability or piece of equipment that SHOULD have been in the Guard codex gets handed out else where.

They will never be played in any competitive mechanicum force.

They have no delivery system, they are squishier than marines, and their guns just arnt good enough.

What make sternguard good is the fact that they can pod in and be where they need to be. These guys have to march up the field with
about the same toughness as a marine. And we know how good marines marching up the middle are...

This unit is a FW mid tier unit. Not the usual terrible unit but probably one designed with 30k rather than 40k.

Exactly, what we really need for them is a proper dedicated transport...like an Imperator Titan.

Indeed. Two unit of peltasts are good at fending off tarpits, but also can give a friendly titan an edge, which is nice.

That 30" str 4 ap3 heavy 1 rending option on a unit with invo saves, a strength reduction on shooting and fnp light for 12 /13 points seems pretty strong to me. The ability to suddenly shred hordes (both literally and figuratively) as well certainly doesn't hurt. These guys certainly put poor old Marines to shame when it comes to shooting, and make thousand sons seem like a terrible joke.

While some people are calling them mid pack, I think that they're going to be exceptional in their role as titan protectors, but also do very well as normal troops. Put it this way, I'm glad I won't ever have to face them.

Yes, but it only affects the Skitarii troops, not the cult mechanicus or knight.

On moon miranda.

Man, had I even dreamed of rules like this for IG Stormtroopers just a couple years ago I'd have been laughed out of every game store and internet forum in the world.

That said, at this point in 7E, the biggest issue with these guys is exactly how stupid and asinine they can make wargear names, why do we need yet another term for Carapace armor? How many syllables do you need to make a name for what ultimately sounds like a "lightning lance"?

Honestly though, with how pointless infantry are in most armies in 7E, particularly infantry that have to footslog everywhere, as ridiculous as this looks, I just don't see them being terribly relevant in a 1500pt+ game.

But yes, they are yet another wonderful example of rules/power inflation run amok in 40k.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

The ranged ones put Scions to shame in every way except for the lack of deep strike. Feels a bit too much like obvious power creep when they have a multitude of special rules but honestly Forge World in general seems to love loading up stuff with a bunch of "unique" special rules.
