Since I rather not use hot wheels I was curious if anyone knew any companies that made car miniatures?

What scale? For what game? Are you against Hot Wheels or toy cars in general? What era?

Yeah no toys.
I would say around 20mm?
It doesn't really matter the era it's for a sort of Mad Max style thing anyways.

Diecasts are probably your best option, as dedicated plastic kits are a hell of a lot more expensive. 20mm ones are common enough, probably the best option's to go to pound shops or flea markets and pick them up for pennies.
Here's a thread with diecasts turned into Mad Max style cars, though there's dozens over on that forum on the same subject.

Aberrant Games offers resin/metal kits for cars and they have a Post-Apocalyptic/Mad Max aesthetic. Some of the sail vehicles and motorcycles/quads are pretty cool!
But you can do so much with toys!
These both started out as Hot Wheels. I added some metal parts from Aberrant Games (another great feature of their site, a bits section in their shop that has lots of cool weapons and equipment) and a little paint and boom!

You want toy cars.
Look at what Tamsin over at the Wargaming Girl blog has done for her Car Wars project with toy cars, a little paint, and a few additions:

Tamiya does a number of injection moulded WW2 cars in 1/48 that would close enough for 28mm, if you want automobiles for a setting that their oldish aesthetic could fit into.

Stan Johansen has a range of 20mm Road Warrior stuff:

A few cars and a pick up, some cycles, and plenty of conversion bits if you can get over your dislike of toy cars.
I highly recommend the LAF forum, where some VERY talented folks have done some incredible work converting toy cars, including but not limited to these threads:

This seems a good place to ask:
Does anyone know of a good source for 1:87 or 1:100 civilian vehicles (1960's onwards?)

HO Cars on amazon /ebay you can get 50 bag of prepainted cars for cheap ($10+). I bought these about a year ago. Only photo I have is from my blog - repainted/used for terrain:
here are the cars http://www.ebay.com/itm/50PCS-Different-style-Multiple-colors-Model-Cars-1-100-HO-Scale-painted-/252239734167?hash=item3abaa8e597:g FUAAOSwU-pXvbWj

If you really don't want to use toy cars then Word Forge Games make quite a range of 20mm (designed to be a size match for hot wheels stuff) resin cars/buggies/bikes/trikes for their Devil's Run post-apoc game. Also a War Rig which is rather large.
The below is just some of their stuff (I haven't built any of the Skinner's faction vehicles yet which are mostly made of rust, spikes and bits of people they have just eaten).

Great list of sources here. I'd also recommend Hot Wheels or -if you don't like the exaggerated wheels- Matchbox.
Here's another site with great number of diecast toy vehicle conversions and alot of info about how they were done.
http://ironhands.com/rwmodels.htm
For myself, I've done a good number of 28mm post- apoc car conversions and even though they are technically too large, I've had great luck using mostly 1/43 and 1/48 scale vehicles.

That is a fantastic write up.
