Hi just recently got back into 40k and well kinda wish i never bothered, so i want to try age of sigmar out as i havent played since 7th edition fantasy.
Half my friends play tournaments and other half all play competitive strong army lists so i kind of need to pick a real strong army to start.

They have all been talking about combos and strong formations, like the skryre warpflame shennanigans and i dont want to use anything like that as it seems pretty cheesy.

So what armies and builds would you recommend. I like most armies as ive collected most in the past before.

Eventually all the armies will have some formation cheese so I would get used to it now.

Ok so what army/ type of list would you say are the top of the cheese right now so i can have it ready if needed but i can tailor it right down to play friends i wanna keep lol.

Beastclaws will be overpowered but not outright cheese pretty much however you slice it. Bonesplittaz are what you want to keep options open. One of their battalions (Kunnin'Rukk) is possibly the most OP in the game but their units are merely a bit above average on their own. Accordingly how much you invest in battalions can scale you from casual-appropriate up to cheesy friendship ender.

Snoop kinda had it right though; while there are a lot of OP models the outright cheese almost always involves battalions.

Beastclaw gets you a fluffy powerful army that is not pure cheese, and is pretty cheap money wise if you have mostly stonehorns and thundertusks

I'll agree with above.
Pretty sound advice really.

Another one is Sylvaneth.
Solid units, good rules and you can adjust the strength simply by adding in kurnoth hunters.
They are one of the stronger units of the game that in a high enough quantity, can be stupidly OP.

So you can play normal games but can easily up the strength of your army.

Thanks for the feedback guys, beastclaws sound cool i always like big monsters but can they get a bit boring? that was my main problem with ogres in the past.

Having played Ogres in 8th and playing them now, I'd say that if you got bored with them in the past you probably will again. Their style hasn't really changed and there is certainly very little finesse to the army. Not that these are inherently bad, of course!

Only two of those are battle line. Specifically the savage orruk

Beastclaw is savage my friend uses my army and I have to play against it all the time. On days that he has good rolls... especially with the stonehorn... I'm pretty screwed. These guys can also move across the board super fast.

Seraphon are pretty sweet - now that they nerfed the ripperdacyls they arent super cheesy, but overall great army.

Sylvaneth - You get cheesy with these guys when you start filling the table with wyldwoods. I run 4 individual woods and still feel like I need more, but I don't mind the cheese Some people may say running 4 ranged hunters is cheese.... i don't know if I would go that far.

I disagree about Beastclaw, in particular if you are playing scenarios you won't have the bodies to do what you need to. I do like it combined with Bonesplittaz, lots of bodies and damage.

I like Skaven all around, Verminus can be fun or competitive just by swapping a few heroes. For instance, you take Tretch. Raventail to buff the Stormvermin and/or big units of Clan Rats in addition to the Warlord. Then have Sayl the Faithless fly them 18" yo where you need them. Just leave Tretch and Sayl at home for fun games, and take a Doomwheel.

"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.
