So I'm coming back to 40k after a break. I've read through the Traitor Legions books and love it. I have a ridiculously large CSM collection (lacking in tanks though). I'm looking at either Alpha Legion or Death Guard. I plan on using their special detachments. Does anyone have any experience playing with either faction? What units/formations do you suggest? Any strategis that are recommended? Thanks for the help!

Alpha Legion infiltrating Chosen spam is pretty decent. You also get a rerollable 4+ to bring cultist units back if you take the Lost and the Damned as your auxiliary choice.

From what I understand, Death Guard is Necron-level durability if that's more your play style.

What is the preferred set up for cultists? Pistol/cc?

Yes. Flamers are appreciated sometimes too.

I figured it would be due to their BS. Thanks!

I was playing Death Guard long before it even became more durable through Traitor Legions. I already liked the toughness increase, but the additions of the Gifts of Nurgle and them being relentless now upped the ante for the regular CSM squads, their Raptors, their Havocs, their Terminators and Chosen. It already was my choice to go for Death Guard first (although I have some World Eaters, Thousand Sons, and Emperor's Children as well as a Chaos Undivided force), and I am currently thinking of increasing my Death Guard yet again.
Death Guard don't mind a lack of tanks. Most of them probably just rusted or broke down in other suitably unfortunate manners aeons ago.

When going Death Guard, I'd say "what weapons?" Plague Zombies don't understand no 'stinking weapons'. Especially with a Nurglified Dark Apostle leading a whole bunch of returning Zombie squads. Hmmm. May need to expand on those 40 Plague Zombies (a mix between Zombie parts and both Catachans and Cadians plastics) I already have.

Pappa Nurgle brings love, warmth and joy to your body. Even if it is through bacteria and viruses going rampant through you, while inexplainably staying alive.

But all that is just my opinion, of course. I would lie if I said I didn't like at least half of the other Traitor Legions as well, including the Black Legion nowadays.
As for non-Plaguified Cultists... I'd say their weapons load-out would depend on what you would do with them. If you mean for then to just sit on objectives while tougher stuff clears the table, a bit of long-range firepower through aytoguns wouldn't hurt. If you just wabt to have a cheap screen of expendable Wounds, that enter the combat (or get charged first) to tie up opponent's forces until your 'cavalry' arrives to 'save them', a blob of CCW&AP Cultists is your thing.
