How do?

So way back when Japanese Horror began making waves in the Western market with the likes of Ring, Ju-On, Dark Water etc, I was there. I snaffled them up whenever I found them on sale, and revelled in this new wave of actually scary horror, following years of increasingly tepid slasher fare.

Then the inevitable happened. It became too popular. No, not in a Hipster way, more a very soulless, very corporate 'everyone wanting a slice of that pie', and it became harder to know for certain if you were about to buy a genuinely good horror film, or yet another 'package it right and it will sell' snoozefest. And when you were paying £20 or so for VHS, that matters. So I kind of dropped out the market and lost track.

And this is where you come in. Are there any J-Horror fans (or indeed any horror from that corner of the world) can give me a list of movies I should check out?

Just as slasher films became less interesting due to popularity it isn't surprising that J-Horror followed that route. I thought about mentioning Audition but assumed it was already seen, or at least known about considering the popularity of it. If you are looking for creepy psychological horror some of it has moved again and there have been a few here and there. The Blackcoat's Daughter just came out and is supposed to be fairly decent. I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House, the directors second film that oddly came out first, is on Netflix. House of the Devil is supposed to be a decent slow burn 80's horror homage that isn't a slasher.

I know they aren't Japanese but as you pointed out it is sort of quiet at the moment on really good horror films. They are either burned out at the moment or it is middling quality stuff because of the popularity and push to get stuff out. It will quiet down then someone will make something to wake people up again.

Saw Blackcoat's Daughter this weekend. Thats a freaking trip of a movie. It feels a lot like Let the Right One In. There's only one bit that I thought was stupid:
Spoiler:
At one point during the day one of the people steps out of a hallway into the entrance and sees what looks like three heads in a sack inside the doorway. at that point I'd just start running right out that exit and not back up and go back in the hallway. I would make Carl Lewis look like a plodder running out of there. OK who am I kidding, I'd rip the sleeves off my shirt pull out a brace of full auto wiener dogs, light a cigar and go to town on the badguy Kurt Russell style because we all know thats how I roll...

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG
-"Don't mind Frazzled. He's just Dakka's crazy old dude locked in the attic. He's harmless. Mostly."
