Hi!

As the title suggests my question concerns the Warband structure and iconography of Chaos Space Marines.

Specifically I'm wondering if the scheme of a warband would be consistent throughout or if you're likely to see slight variations that might signify a particular squad/force's allegiance to a specific lord/aspiring champion within that warband.

Just to clarify I'm not talking about allegiances to any of the chaos gods, more so icons/markings that display a units allegiance to their commander.

Its pretty broad

As it depends on the warband itself

Prime example Red Corsairs, While they are primarily Red (as its Chaos' favorite color) there is some fluff saying that 'newer' members just tend to remove offending iconography and then paint a large red X over their should pad with chapter icon.

But anything can be a go for Chaos warbands... the only time it gets to be specific is when you are dealing with the legions

It's Chaos.....
they are pretty chaotic
they rebelled against the IoM because they wanted to do what they wanted when they want to.

You can have your warband look however you want.

As mentioned, most CSM warbands are free to do whatever they want to with some exceptions. I would think most legions don't really care what the individual warbands do to their armor.

The exception being the warbands that swear loyalty to a particular chaos lord or demon prince which may or may not require some sort of uniformity.

Perhaps only one I can think of is the Black Legion which insists on the renouncement of other ties and total fealty to Abbadon. It is kinda hard to be part of the Black Legion if you don't paint your armor black (plus, why wouldn't you paint your armor in the most bad-burro colors). But even this is hardly steadfast rule even for them.

I ask this as I am painting an Undivided warband, "Warriors of Mayhem".

They are supposed to be purple with a silver trim but for some reason painting the skulls silver just didnt sit well with me, it didnt look right (because reasons) and so I went with brass instead.

Now im thinking of rolling with the brass skulls and working the change into some fluff for my army while still keeping them as Warriors of mayhem but I want to keep it plausible.

Perfectly fine and looks good too =D

Do remember Companies within a Chapter have their own variant colors
And a lot of these random Chaos mobs are either Legion duders who made their own group, or Chapter Spacemarines who have fallen (be it a single duder all the way to an entire Chapter)

So this is just one such grouping within this Warband
