HOLLYWOOD – Benedict Cumberbatch is to make his directorial debut with a big screen adaptation of BBC cult sci-fi show Blake’s 7.

Fans of BBC cult show Blake’s 7 were celebrating today, when Benedict Cumberbatch announced that he would be directing a movie of the 80s science fiction series. He spoke EXCLUSIVELY with The Studio Exec about his long-cherished project:

Of course I was a bit young for Blake’s 7 when it was first shown (1978-1981), but my uncle had them all on video cassette because he worked for the BBC and I got hooked. For me it was a little bit more sci-fi than Doctor Who, which I also loved. Blake’s 7 was just something else though.

Cumberbatch won’t be playing Blake though.

No I’ve got Tom Hardy for that role. He’s so charismatic. I’m not sure if people would believe me as that sort of leader.

But he will be acting as Ker Avon, an ambiguous member of the seven.

It is a role I’ve been dying to play my whole life. Of course, it’ll be hard to live up to Paul Darrow’s masterful performance. Paul Bettany is on board to play Villa and Cate Blanchet will play the arch-villainess Servalan.

Servelan sound a great casting descision, we'll see about the rest. Wonder if they're going to go for the (fairly dull) origin story or dropping in later in the story?

Wasn't Blake accused of being a viable candidate for US congressman in the original? Not sure how that would play today.

I want this. I want this so bad and I want this right now. I have wanted this for my entire life, even before I knew what Blake's 7 was. That is how hard I want this.

I actually quite liked that film... Freeman was a great Arthur and Alan Rickman as Marvin was genius.

As for this, it's certainly a heck of a cast. Let's just hope it manages to keep the substance of B7 while also giving it some style; Without the political overtones, it's just generic sci-fi.

Maybe it's just my distaste for Martin Freeman. He only ever plays 'exasperated' and I find the routine wears thin after about five minutes.

But to each their own!

It was the plot I wasn’t sold on with the HHGTTG movie. Not that it was different - the book changed things when it was published, so fair play to any other adaptations. Just that it (IMO) wasn’t very good.

This? B7 is grubby, melancholy and British. The tone is the important bit. Get whoever did Logan to do this.

Blakes Seven was great fun.

There are some big shoes to fill (and some very high heels!) cast wise.

Yeah, see, I don't think whoever runs that site really understands how satire works or what makes The Onion good. Just writing a bunch of vaguely plausible stuff in a factual style with a little "haha, just kidding bruh" disclaimer tucked away somewhere isn't satire. I'd contend it's not even, you know, funny.
