Let's talk about this topic. Ever since THQ went burst, there has been a surge of Warhammer 40k games made by different companies. I have not tried all of them so many of my points will be based on walkthrough and professional reviews. I didn't know of Warhammer 40k through its books or tabletop games. I was a fan of Company of Heroes, so when I saw Relic also made the Dawn of War series, I gave it a go. What drew me was the number of factions involved and the merciless, dark nature of the conflicts. I started reading the books and eventually got into playing the tabletop game. So there, the video games do help GW boost their sales, but can we have a good Warhammer 40k without THQ?

Final Liberation: This was pre-THQ and it was very fun. The lore and models are old but I can see people putting a lot of efforts into making this game.

Dawn of War 3: This game killed the whole franchise that got me into Warhammer 40k in the first place. The campaign is awful. I understand the Orks can be spontaneous, but both the Eldar and Space Marines are dumb beyond reason. There has to be some logic within the 40k universe or we will have Abaddon getting his ass kicked by a Grot. Gameplay is generic and there is no sense of progression within the campaign. Multiplayer is fine, but why play as one of 3 races when you can have 6 or 9 races in Dawn of War 2 and Dawn of War Soulstorm.

Space Wolves: There is one level I cannot beat no matter what. The game creates a paywall where it takes an impossible length of grinding to advance.

Freeblade: I beat this game. Pretty fun, albeit a little repetitive and enemy walkers all fight the same. This game is also notorious for you using Heavy Stubber to shred Chaos Space Marines and even vehicles.

Deathwatch: A somewhat solid take on the whole Tyranid killing.

Space Hulk: Uninspired and repetitive.

Armageddon, Storm of Vengeance and Sanctus Reach: Look very cheap. Slain units don't even persist. They are also based on actual lore, which mean they serve only to advertise GW's other products rather than standing on their own.

Legacy of Dorn: Herald of Oblivion: A text-based game and the most realistic take on the whole Space Marine exploring Space Hulk plot. A bit short and the sequel, Pit of Commorragh, is unfortunately cancelled.

Battlefleet Gothic Armada: Good game overall. A bit slow and the singleplayer missions lack variety.

Inquisitor Martyr: Good presentation. Bad gameplay and level design.

Gladius: Again, no body persistence. Why 4 factions with Space Marines and Imperial Guards? A pathetic excuse to appease the fans of Imperial Guards and Space Marines. I hate it when 40k games try to appease a bunch of narrow-minded fans who would only play certain factions.

There are many other games around that I don't even bother. Most of them are pretty bad. I am not liking the current state of Warhammer 40k games where there are so many bad ones out there that serve either to cash in on the Warhammer 40k license with zero appeals to outsiders (I started liking the Dawn of War games without knowing anything about the Warhamemr 40k universe) or to promote GW's other products like Space Hulk, Shadow War Armageddon, Sanctus Reach and just their models.

What do you think about the current state of Warhammer 40k games? If you were the leader of a large video game company, what will be your take on a Warhammer 40k game?

Here is the types of games I want to play:

A Dawn of War game with Ardennes Assault-inspired campaign. You control 3 or 4 Space Marine companies, each with their own unique units and abilities, each led by a character. For example, 1st Company led by Apollo Diomedes will have higher veterancy and access to Sternguard and Vanguard upgrades for Tactical Marines and Assault Marines. 2nd Company led by a Librarian Captain focuses on psykic powers and can upgrade Sergeant of every squad into a psyker. The campaign has you play in a map similar to Dark Crusade but you only play the Space Marines against the occupying Orks and Tau. Each map contains a scenario with missions and cutscenes like in Ardennes Assault rather than just a Skirmish match. As you progress through the campaign, a new threat emerges, Chaos, Tyranids or Necron, and you have to fight them off as well. The Space Marine companies don't have limitless manpower and units lost during battles will reduce their strength; a company with 0% strength will be permanently destroyed if you also fail the scenario.

Sequel to Space Marine. 3rd person hack-and-slash. Add leveling up system. Add wargear crafting. Add co-op. Longer singleplayer mode with better designed missions rather than just fighting off hordes of enemies all the time. Better boss battles. Add Necron or Dark Eldar as enemy. Killing Orks and Chaos is getting bit stale right now.

Detective Inquisition game. Could be a casual point-and-click style or something like the Sherlock Holmes series.

I would like to see a shooter similar to Space Marine but with better multiplayer. Something like the original Star Wars: Battlefront could work, have 4 factions and classes within those but I'd definitely be open to original ideas.
I actually liked BG: Armada and am looking forward to the next one.

As much as I liked the original Dawn of War, I just don't think there's much of a market for RTS games right now so the chances of us getting one are slim.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

ok some thoughts, first of all, quit insisting on bodfies persisiting after death, it looks nice in some games, but in others it's not only silly but produces lag. Gladius ia a Civ style 4X game, persistant bodies just aren't part of that genre.

As for Armageddon, it's actually a bit of a diamond in the rough, doesn't look like much but it's a suprisingly good game.

As for what game I'd like to play, give CD projekt Red the 40k lisence and tell em to make an RPG, hand em a copy of Eisenhorn, the inevitable game would be absoltely AWESOME

Sanctus Reach was pretty good in my opinion. Casualties also do persist if killed with am appropriate weapon, but if you shoot an ork with a lascannon they do go pop.

This is.. an odd complaint. I mean, they wanted to put IG and SM in, why do you think it's a bad idea to put them in?

This is a complete list of 40k based games up untill 2014 made by TotalBiscuit (RIP). Most of the video is focused on a terrible 40k game called storm of vengeance. Jump to 1:17(-5:43) to see the list.
Spoiler:

There’s always been bad and good games concerning 40k. Extra credits made two videos about how the 40k license has been handled. It’s pretty interesting stuff. Especially the second video. As a matter of fact...
Spoiler:

Spoiler:

I think the license is in a pretty good state. Every now and then we get an amazing game. Most end up decent or bad though, but it’s easy enough to avoid the bad ones.

As to the game I’d like to see I think it’d be a total war warhammer 40k. Just throw it down in some random world with huge wars. Secondly I’d also love a proper Inquisition detective story rpg game. As always I would also be very interested in a game that explores the non war parts of 40k.

@OP there was a game called chaos gate (in the list) that’s similar to what you’re asking for. You control half a company of ultramarines and every single dude has varied stats and traits. Pretty old and it’s begging for a remake.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

I'd love to see a proper, deep RPG set int he 40k universe. One was actually underway at one point and was in development for a long time but it got canned. CD Projekt Red are doing a cyberpunk game next. If we could persuade them to take on the license that would be awesome.

Creative Assembly have the WH license for their Total War games and they were also responsible for the under-appreciated Alien Isolation, which was a really good, unique take on the FPS genre. It even had Dan Abnett as writer. Maybe give them a shot at creating a first-person 40k game?

part of why I named CDPR was because they seem to be a company that basicly consists of a buncha Polish nerds who tend towards passion projects based around franchises they love. which makes them IMHO ideally suited for a 40k RPG

Nah, a proper 40K game should look like Leisure Suit Larry. Larry plays a minor Inquisitor who has the delightful task to unveil some sort of mystery in a remote Sisters sanctuary. Players will experience for the first time what kind of scandalous clothes theses pious women wear when they are not in battle. In addition with advanced BBT, they will make it very hard for Larry to solve the strange going-ons.
His modus operandi would look like this: Sticking his inquisitive nose in every available crevice to be found.

It would be a game that should be in the collection of any true fan of 40K.

eh I like Inquisitor, that and eternal crusade and space hulk death wing, tho always loved Dawn of war and last stand and space marine was just <3 .

I'd love to see as someone else said total war 40k but would love to see a game about the sisters of battle showing how badass they can be and link it with their plastic release

Regarding Space Hulk, there have been several excellent games that do it well, like a very old classic Space Hulk II: Vengeance of the Blood Angels. The modern Space Hulk title some years back was originally a pretty poor show, but the developers took that feedback to heart and quickly made a better version, called Space Hulk: Ascension. Instead of poorly transporting tabletop mechanics into a vidya, Ascension plays with the same base but puts a spin on it to make it a proper video game and it is awesome. Having played over hundred ours of it, I can honestly recommend trying it out. Expansions available, too.

Other great titles are of course the original Dawn of War (great RTS), Space Marine (perhaps the best representation of a space marine yet, also pretty good hack-n-slash) and BFG: Armada (needs more campaign, though).

If I were to raise one above others, that would be the granddaddy of 40k games, the Chaos Gate. Grimdark, overly retro, faux serious, utterly punishing and about the closest you get to XCOM: Heretics Unknown. Great music, great atmosphere, great gameplay, oh my Emperor is the user interface horribly outdated and begging for a modern remake. Also, has persistent bodies that can be looted of stuff if you need those grenades later (and you will, as the best in life is to krak your enemies, blow them up before you and hear the lamentations of the cultists).

#ConvertEverything blog with loyalist Death Guard in true and Epic scales. Also Titans and killer robots! C&C welcome.

Eternal Crusade is a passable PvP-only version of Space Marine. I play it. I enjoy it. But only for the license.

I'd much rather a coop Space Marine with additional content/options. For every Space Marine, there should be 2 Heretics or Orkz. Or you should be able to play as a Nob krumpin yer way thru Guard. Or an Aspect Warrior...

The form of Eternal Crusade requires every choice to be equally powerful, due to its XvX faction balance. This means a Bolter Marine needs to be as powerful as a Chaos Sorcerer or a PlasmaGun Marine or a Lascannon Marine. Or an Ork Boy.

A version of it that had Cultists join CSM, Boyz join the Ork Nob teams, Guardians (or Ork Boyz or Guardsmen) join the Eldar, and Guardsmen join the Marines would make it a lot more fun.

Throw in points (spend resources to upgrade, but limited resources across the team), and you could add things like Termies and Scouts and Sternguard. Or Nids, with NPC Gaunts, where players could, with enough resources, play Warriors or Lictors! Or maybe even a Carnifex!

I dream. I would love that game. But all we have is Eternal Crusade. Not what i want, but the closest I can get.

DoW I, II, and Total War:WH seem to be the only "great" Warhammer games I've played. Space Marine was good. Others, not so much. And DoWIII was terribad.

I was going to mention that Eternal Crusade was missing from the list. You beat me to it.
It has been compared to Space Marine since its beginning. The views are similar, but that's about it.
Their plans got torn up so often, that the game is hardly anything like its original announcements.
But, it is a multi-player shooter. 4 factions, customisations, store for upgrades, etc.

Personally I like the older WH games:
The original Space Hulk that was released on PC and PS1,
Chaos Gate,
Firewarrior was pretty good,
Final Liberation was decent,
Space Marine (Yeah, I know. This is a newer one) Was quite fun.
I also enjoyed Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen (Although they are WHF not 40K)

I didn't like Dawn of War and therefore never tried the 2nd one.
I picked up the new space hulk + ascention as well as the space wolf game but stopped because all these piles of new WH games that are pouring out seem like cheap indie mobile games. and I can't believe I spent any money on the ones I did.

We're gonna need another Timmy!

Are there any 40K games that are playable on PS4 and rated T?
Everything I've seen is rated M and my kids PS accounts forbid them from playing M rated games, which I am ok with except there is no way for make to allow some M games that I'm ok with.

I think they could have real success with an open world game like fallout or elder scrolls. Something where you could join chaos, a gene stealer cult or simply purge the world for the emperor. I think if a AAA studio took this on and did it right it could really move the 40k world into more mainstream areas and allow for further expansion.

I really enjoyed Spacemarine. It was a solid game and the online pvp very entertaining. Just a shame the sequel got canned indefinitely following THQs implosion.

Wracked up a huge amount of time on DoW: Retribution simply playing last stand mode. Challenging and fun.

Other than those I can't say any of the other games drew my interest. Certainly not going to play again that travesty of DoW3. Great plan, lets try and get into the eSports market by trying a Starcraft / DotA type hybrid and end up creating a bastard child that should never have seen the light of day

As a side - Highly recommend both Warhammer: Total War games.

I am also a narrow minded fan who only plays Imperial Guard [and Sisters of Battle, but there's one game with them in it].

Also, IG are ideally suited for inclusion into a 4x style game.

Also, it is my opinion that Dawn of War II: Retribution was kind of crap. Every level was basically "follow the path to the boss fight, kill everything along the way," and your heroes could do most of it on their own. All in all, it felt like a RPG with limited roleplay opportunities, not a RTS. RTS games should not have "boss fights" against large single enemies like that.

I kind of think the Dawn of War series started to go downhill somewhat after Winter Assault. Dawn of War was good, Dawn of War: Winter Assault, was short, but good, and then with DC they introduced the Risk-style campaign map, which was a massive step down. Most of the game was just playing generic skirmish matches over and over again, but it did have the strongholds and the special bonus spots, where there were scripted missions that were pretty fun. Then there was Soulstorm, which was just complete crap. It halved the number of scripted missions compared to DC by adding the faction bonuses to strongholds, and then removed persistent bases, so you'd have to play the same generic skirmish match over and over again. In addition, all the strongholds were very similar, even more so than Dark Crusade's. Soulstorm was kind of a pain to get through.

I didn't play Dawn of War II until Retribution, and while the characters were memorable and plot engaging, the gameplay itself was lacking.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Maybe its just wishful thinking but I would love to see a 40k mmo with action gameplay like Space Marine. I didn't mind the Warhammer mmo and it was a shame to see that die.

As for the recent games, they have been pretty hit and miss yeah. Inquisitor Martyr was extremely disappointing but I thought Gladius was a pretty solid strategy game.

Another +1 for Space Marine - that game was immense, and would have richly deserved a sequel. Hell, I don't even need to play as a Space Marine - even playing as a Guardsman/Inquisitorial retinue would be excellent.

I'd love to see a Mass Effect or Skyrim/Fallout styled RPG. With an Inquisitorial Theme, a story driven game such as Mass Effect would translate wonderfully. Even Skyrim/Fallout, which is far more open in terms of both gameplay and customisation would suit an Inquisitoral theme well, even if the story elements were toned down somewhat.

(As a note: I mention Inquisitorial a lot, because whereas Guardsmen are largely limited in terms of which weaponry they can use, Inquisitorial retinues have much greater freedom - which lends itself perfectly to video games that tend to drown players in weaponry choices.)

As for the RTS genre, for any of you who have played Men of War, or any of it's sequels, then 40k would translate perfectly to the engine. Large scale combat, with a vast array of weaponry, vehicles and units, but with the ability to scale the combat right down to control and customisation of individuals. Furthermore, it has fully destructible environments, a well designed cover system, is largely physics based and the ability to produce superbly detailed and designed levels. It really is fantastic. Throw in some quality cut-scenes and voice acting (and obviously a textural overhaul) and that would make a stellar game. Oh and a well designed editor means that a modding community, or even just people designing new campaigns/missions, is already catered for.

Finally, for those of you who enjoyed Armageddon, there used to be an old game named 'Star General', which worked along the premise of hex-based combat both in space and on the surface of planets. Whilst Armageddon was good, the turn limits and the rather linear maps detract from any open play. However with Star General, you start off with one planet and via building more units from various facilities, with a rudimentary trading and economic system to accumulate credits, you had the opportunity to conquer a map that could contain hundreds of planets. A 40k themed remake of Star General, with updated graphics and possibly in 3D, would provide endless replayability. And, it practically generates it's own story - a system/sector/segmentum besieged/invaded etc. by multiple factions - with forces engaging in Void, Atmospheric and Ground warfare.

Now with 100% more blog: 'Beyond the Wall'
