Subject: How many people here play against orks on a regular basis?

I'm wondering how many people here actually play against Orks. I went to a tournament this week and brought my Evil sunz orks to compare them before and after the codex. Long story short... they got demolished (turn 2 every unit was off the board I rolled so badly). However, while i was there I faced about 5 people. 3 of the five people had never even played against an ork player despite being in the hobby for a number of years. In fact, one player demanded to see my index as he didn't believe me when I was firing nowhere near the number of shots he was led to believe Ork had. The other two said this was the first vechile Ork army they had ever gone against and was surprised to know we even had army builds outside of mass boyz.
I didn't think there were so few Ork players... so I'm wondering if this was just a fluke or have many people here never faced orks?

Most of the non-marine armies tend to pretty much dry up and blow away while they're not competitive. for years I was the only person in my club of 50-60 players who had any Harlequins or Dark Eldar, and I played both in the same army lol.
We had Orks aplenty in 7th, in 8th they basically went away. Necrons are also pretty much gone right now.
The two unusually popular armies we tend to have in our area are Chaos Marines, Sisters of Battle and Guard. Lot of really passionate players of those armies that will stick it out through rough patches. Tau, Eldar of all kinds, Necrons, Nids, and orks tend to ebb and flow and really dry up when the armies are bad.

Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

I find that the_scotsman is mostly accurate here. A lot of players have multiple armies, and a local area's competitive players will often play "what's hot right now" armies. For that reason, the mix of armies will often swing. There is always a core group that sticks with their army no matter what, and sometimes those groups include Orks, and sometimes not.
We have one person in my area who is pretty consistently playing Orks or Imperial Fists. But one player, that I rarely get a chance to have a match with, that only plays them some of the time... that's once in a blue moon for sure.

I have a couple of ork players in my FLGS but they have stopped playing orks and play now with Tau, etc... that will change with the Codex, I'm sure.

In my area ork players are mostly playing other armies till they get a codex. It's hard right now between the index being lackluster and orks lacking a lot of viability at the moment.

Always been super casual with 40k, went to tournaments only with WHFB.
But in my experience, Ork players from 3rd to now became more rare each edition. The few I know well are just frustrated with each codex iteration and just don't have enough interest.
I think that is a lot of money GW left on the table.

They have had a bad codex for like twenty years now is it? Not even just a middling one. Even in 8th they were given a gakky index and left to last. If you don't support your community its hard to expect to see it grow, especially watching the same armies get richer every edition. You either quit playing or pick a new race. Some people stuck it out with Orkz and good on them though hopefully this month changes things

For me, it wasn't even the rules becoming worse, it was the rules steadily becoming more and more bland. playing orks in the index is like eating a sleeve of saltines with no water over the course of a couple hours. you have this WILD unit with CRAZY CUSTOM GUNS and each one is an individualist egomaniac and they're the most customizable kit ever made and

I can see it. I remember the 3rd edition codex. I had it in italian before reading it in english (I have to say the italian translation was a little masterpiece on its own, but is difficult for me to render it to non-natives). I remember lootas (or their equivalent) back then would lift whole squad options from the Imperial troops.
Anyhow, I am afraid is linked to the general fear GW has of conversions and customization nowadays. Very sad because for many is the bread and butter of the hobby.
Orks obviously suffer more than others, but we are all witnessing the blandness of the new characters, as an example.

That's a big one for sure. The Ork players I knew loved to make custom stuff, but it seems like there's less and less room for the rules to encourage that custom stuff.
I haven't seen Orks with real regularity since 5th. We had a guy in 6th-7th come in every now and again but it might have been 6 times total over a year or two.

There was an Ork player in the tournament I just went to. He went 2-1, beating Harlequins + Eldar + Ynnari, and another list i didn't see. He lost to Knights.
Many of the die hard Ork players I know are running Knights right now, but let's be real, most people are running Knights and i can't blame them.

I voted never, for my current situation. Just this year I moved towns, and I think in a solid 8 months, I haven't even seen an Ork Model!
Alright, maybe that was a bit of hyperbole. I live in a fairly small community of about 10 or so players, and a handful more that sometimes come down from another town to play. I only know of one person who has Orks.
He's our resident Dark Eldar player, and those are the only two armies he has. He's been enjoying his time of having at least ONE army that's strong, so the Orks haven't hit the table for a long time.
I miss playing against Orks in early 8th edition. Prior to living in this small community, the even smaller community I came from had a good mix of armies, between imperial xenos and chaos. The player I gamed the most only played Orks, and it was a grand time playing his non-boy-spam lists with my Primaris-Only Ultramarines (Sans Bobby)

I haven't seen or played an Ork army since 5th I don't think.
I've never beaten an Ork army in my life. Ever. I just can't win against them. I feel like that Necron Lord who's always tries to out think Orks, only to find themselves completely unable to understand their tactics and lose badly.
Fantasy I used to see them constantly, almost every other game was against Orcs.

We've got a couple of Orky Boyz at my GW.
I play them occasionally-well, I play ONE of them occasionally. The other refuses to play me, since my Nurgle Daemons buttsmash his Orks too hard.
I'm looking forward to the Dex! Hopefully he'll grow confident enough to challenge me again!
Edit: So re-reading that, it comes off as kinda arrogant. Let me add that I'm not a tournament player and would almost definitely GET buttsmashed at a tourney, but I'm the most competitive player at my store, so I tend to win more than I lose. Add to that Orks being in a bad place right now...

They were a main stay when I played in 5th and some of 6th. Then they didn't get a book in 6th and got a terrible book in 7th.
It's a shame, because they are a great faction that really encourages some crazy conversations and paint schemes while being totally setting appropriate. Some of my favorite models are from creative ork players looting everything. I really hope they get a solid book in 8th.

Since returning to 40k back in Sept. I haven't seen anyone field Orks in my area. I honestly don't think any of the currant players* own any.
*: Except myself. I own an Ork force. But when I stopped playing they were only a 1/4 complete project. If I had to I could probably put about 500pts on the table. But it'd take a lot of digging to get to its case in the storage & even then it'd be a pretty sorry force.... Best to just wait for the codex & make it my winter project.
The kicker? I'd begun building this force back at the tale end of 4th/dawn of 5th to remedy this exact situation - nobody in the local area playing orks anymore.

I have been waiting for the codex. In the meantime, I split my ork army in two and play games using the 7th edition rules and codex with a buddy of mine. I’m looking forward to the codex so I can start playing 8th ed against other factions and players.
Edit: funny thing is, at the time that I’m writing this, the most votes in the poll are the last category, “i am an ork...”

Ok now I haven't played regularly for a long time, since 5th edition in about 2013 and have now only just got back into 40k with my marines. But back then I played every week at a decent sized club in a league and before that when I was younger played at a couple tourneys and I can only remember playing Orks once or twice in proper matched games.
The one game I remember well included my Tau gunline obliterating every vehicle they had turn 1 ! Poor Orks.

Reading the Armageddon WDs right now and this thread is a real bummer in contrast
Amazing that GW managed to give Orks some of the best models with a very consistent range (obviously with some questionable ommissions like plastic warboss, extremely old buggies until now and the still ancient wartrack etc.) but rules so bad that one of *the* popular armies almost disappeared.

In the little group I play there's a nice mix of armies, and here is the list off the top of my head:
Space Marines x 1
Dark Angels x 1
Eldar x 2
Harlequins x 1
Dark Eldar x 1
Death Guard x 2
Tyranids x 2
Custodes x 2
AdMech x 1
Knughts x 1
Orks x 1
Tau x 2
Guard x 1
Demons x 1
As you can see a good mix! The only armies not seen are Necrons, Genestealer Cults, blood angels and standard Chaos Marines.
The Ork player is there and whenever we have a game it's usually my Custodes and his Orks charging into melee ASAP for a laugh!
He's hoping the codex will give his units some extra tactical choices and some cunning starts to use!
