Cracked open my copy of BSF and finally built all the little blighters.

So a new plog for a new ploject... I mean project. Let's see if I finish this one

Progress log:
Ur Ghouls - done and based
Spindle drones - 4 done and based 4 undercoated
Guardsmen - built. 7 down, 7 to go.
Beastmen - done and based
CSM - done and based
Psykers - done and based
MC Hammer - primed
Negavolts - built

Eldar - built and replacement purchased
Raus- built
Rein - built
Robot - built
Priest - built
Psycho - built
Trader - built
Kroot- built
Navigator - built

First up, the Ur-ghoul thingies as they are pretty much the simplest thing in the box. Simple grey base coat with some highlighting followed by one of various washes. Used Drakenhof, Biel Tan and Guilliman (I know it's a glaze rather than a shade). I tried Cassandora as well, but that really didn't work so I rinsed it off and did a second Drakenhof as that was my favourite of the other 3. Heh, there are still a couple of yellow smudges left that ill have to touch up.

Drakenhof

Biel Tan

Guilliman

I think another layer of Guilliman is needed, but the other 2 look ok as is and just need a touch of detailing on the claws and nostrils.

Ill be doing scenic bases for all if them, just waiting for my order coming from Green stuff World.

Anyway, C&C welcome and grateful for any advice you may have.

Gday mate - they look really good, especially for such a simple process. If I ever pick up orks, that’d be a great way to do their skin.

I haven’t actually seen the Guilliman glaze before - gives a really nice effect, a bit more contrast than the washes.

There are some sweet models in BSF, will be cool to see how you tackle them in the blog!

Thanks Tzurk. The Gulliman blue one is a bit more contrast as I took that one all the way up to white as I thought the glaze would work better on that. Not sure if it was necessary, but hopefully the second coat will help seal it as a worthwhile scheme.

And so here is my secret weapon against grey plastic... a portable painting station. I finally realised that I could be using the dead time waiting for my kids to.get to.sleep for more productive purposes than mucking about on my phone. This should let me.get an easy extra hour in per day. I don't think I'll be able to.do much more than an hour before my back gives in, but it should help.progress.

Some more.pics.of.almost finished ur ghouls a bit later tonight.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The Ghoul brothers are done! Score 1 for the Flinty (except the bases, but they don't count or something).

W00t. Next up I need to clear my kill team scouts that are sitting there half done then I can move onto something else blackstoney... drones or beastmen... Not sure.

Very happy with the painting station though. The legs are nice and stable and usable on my bed and on the sofa, even if its not that comfy after a while.

Kill team scouts are done, so now back to the Fortress. Next up, beastman as I've entered them into this month's painting comp.

Proof shot

Progress shots from today. Almost done with the first set of base coats. Metals next and then on to shading and patterning of the fur. Going for a rag tag motley assembly of scavenged clothing and kit. Everything that is orange Brown will be a rusty thing.

Thanks guys.

I've made a bit more progress on the beastmen, but today I must report that my paint station has just levelled up. I got a nifty double header "daylight" led clamp lamp. It's pretty lightweight as well which us just as well as I'm starting to reach the limit of "portable" with the thing. Much better than the head torch I had hitherto been using to see.

And I based the ur ghuls. I rather like the effect so I think I'll roll it out over the whole game set. I might add some debris and sand I a few places to make it a bit more varied, but the roller thing I got has quite a bit of variation.

And aren't they just darling when they hold ha...claws to cross the free-fire zone to play with the new neighbours

Beastmen are now done!

As always super close up photographs show my level of expertise as solidly table top, but I'm happier getting stuff to this level and finished rather than never done at all

Based in the same way as the ur ghuls as I think this is definately the way forward across the whole set. I went for a bit of a mix of fur patterns for interest. I think the leopard spots came out the best. The mottled grey one didn't quite work as I intended. Probably needs a bit more definition in the lighter grey bits. I might give it another black wash and highlight, but not just now. Anyway... On with the show. C&C welcome as always.

Fantastic bit of hobby work going on here, but my favourite hands down are the ur ghuls. They look like something I could have actual nightmares about. Especially the grey pair, they are stand out horrific.

Congrats on achieving a great standard. Think I may have to grab a blackstone fortress when I've got some hobby space available.

Look forward to seeing what you do with psykers and the imperials.

Progress has slowed a bit as I've been doing some Necromunda stuff for the painting comp this month.

However i have just sorted a storage solution for my Blackstone fortress set. I had originally thought I'd just use a self adhesive magnetic sheet, but I found it didn't hold to the base magnets very well.

Also for BSF the different bad guys come in groups and taking them all out of the box individually would take ages. So I just cut up some steel angle as squad holders. I can get 8 25mm base guys across the box or 6 or 7 32mms.

The base magnets stick to the steel much better than the sheet and the surface area of the steel makes a better hold on the mag sheet.

I might sort some lit the handles to Make it easier to get the angles out.

Next step though is to sort a suspended tray above to hold the rules and cardstock stuff.

With the painting comp deadline extended by a bit I was able to get a bit of BSF time in as well tonight.

Drones. Spindle drones to be exact. I love these guys and they are on eBay for £5 for 4 because no-one knows what to do with them. I've had to restrain myself from picking up more than 1 extra set

While I love the models, they are a bit static, which is great from the point of view of otherworldly weirdness, but its a bit dull with 8 of them. So I converted a couple and gave them new legs. Yes the pinning wire is a bit basic compared to the lovely slender articulated originals, but meh. They'll do for me

Crouchy/defiant drone:

Curious drone:

And with all their droney friends:

For the bases, I can't really get away with the same design as the rest of the set largely because the drone legs are too narrow to pin so I've smoothed the base top off andincribed a similar design to the studio bases. Let's see how it paints up.

I think those new legs work well! The spindle drones are definitely one of my favorite things from blackstone fortress, they are adorable little murder bots.

Thanks AT. I agree, there is something truly marvellous about the sculpt, but I'm glad they can still be fiddled with a bit at least.

And here the little darlings are in their spanky new base coat applied with my spanky new airbrush. I thought I'd go with something a bit more noticeable than the grimy greys and greens of the other bad guys. They are drones aren't they? So yellow and black it will be

On the airbrush front, I do t k ow if it's just that I wrecked my first one by not understanding how to use it properly, or if the higher cost, and presumably build quality, is the real culprit. Either way it's giving much happier and smoother coats than the old one.

Test drone scheme. I wanted something suitably wasp like, but not necessarily a direct copy of earth wasp patterns. So I've tried some simple black bands of varying width and length. I quite like the look, so ill.try it on a few more drones.

Also fixing on a metallic blue edge over a black undercoat for the.body and legs. The feet/lower legs I'm trying for a close.link between the drone and the fortress itself, so trying to make it look like the black material.of the floor is flowing directly.into the drone via the feet. Looks good to.me.at least

Simple red gem effect for the central.laser/sensor thingy.

It's.not finished yet as the base needs some more work and some cables need a spot colour or 2 to add interest. However it's pretty much the scheme i'll use for the other 7 I've got

C&C welcome.

Nice work. Liking the alternative colours you're using on the models. Looking to pick up BSF at some point myself, and always interested in seeing what people do with the set.

Thanks Craggy. The models are lovely and well worth playing with. Ive only played a couple of missions but the game is Definately fun so far.

A week away from home means limited progress, however the first 4 drones are close to complete. Sharing similar but not identical markings. Really just the bases and spot colours to go. Things like the eyes and cables.

This one is most done with jhstthe base to go.

And then a couple of pics of the remaining 3.

With a bit of luck I'll get these done tomorrow and then I'll have time to submit these guys for the monthly painting comp.

Good progress on your BSF models so far Flinty, interesting take on the drones.

I also like your mobile paint station, looks responsibly stable and good light. I tired with a lap cushioned board with a small LED light but didn't really work for me. Your set up has inspired me to have another look it.

Good luck with this months painting entry, I like the models already

Thanks Midget. Having he legs on the tray helps keep it stable and that wee bit higher than on a knee tray I think. I would have preferred it a bit higher, but this just about works. I can Definately recommend that double header lamp. Good light and the 2 heads on one package keeps it nice and compact. It's pretty light as well.

Drone set 1 done. The second set are undercoated but indeed to do the marines for the monthly.painting comp.first before going back to.the drones. I tried q slightly different look for the bases from the glowy blue. It hasn't quite gone to.plan, but I'm happy enough with it to.call them.finished for now. I.might go back and re do the bases when I do the second set.

On the other hand I quite the yellow and black look of the drones themselves. The triangle.guy could have been a bit neater, but ho hum.

Finally got the airbrush out again and decided to give Zenithal highlighting a shot on the BSF traitor marines.

I had primed in grey rather than starting from black. I used a really dark grey to get the shadows but I think it might be a bit too subtle. However the white coat went on fine. I'm not sure the shading comes through under the turquoise, but I quite like the base colour regardless

Never done teal type colours before so it'll be learning experience here too...

So the Zenithal.shading doesn't come out much under the base coat, and no I've washed them both, it's pretty unnoticeable. Oh well. Lesson learned for next time.where I'll.try to.be a bit less.subtle

Washed

I was going to.donthem both green but wasn't too.taken by the effect on the first one. So slight different schemes.it is, rather like the ur ghuls.

Using the same brassy metallics will hopefully bring them together again a bit, although I'll.try to.use different spot colours in the cloth bits to.keep.some level of individuality. Then I need to work out how to take the Lord forward. Might try for.a.slightly more purpley approach with him,.what with it being the royal colour and all.

A bit more progress today. Slowly but surely

Into the "not.quite satisfied" zone now. Thankfully the monthly painting comps Give me enough impetus to push through the doldrums and get everything finished

A few details still need coloured, like holsters and pistols, but almost there. I also got the bases started tonight. Off to.London with work for a couple of days, so.going to.have to pick the pace up.a bit to.get these boys finished. No hope.for Sergeant Smash this month though.

Thankee kindly. Yeah, it wasn't quite what I had intended but I'm not unhappy with it. I think with the next batch just need to come up.with a way to get the grooves to be a bit neater to make yhem easier to paint. The quality of the finish is indicative of the smoothness of the base works.

With the turquoise I'm thinking to try and just do zenithal.shading properly on spanky hammer pants rather than relying on a wash to give depth and interest. But that will need to be a job for another month
