Many come to the Mirrored City, seeking priceless treasures and forbidden knowledge. Soon, there will be another way to unlock its secrets – Warhammer Underworlds: Online. Read on to get an exclusive first look at this video game, coming soon for PC.

Since the release of Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire in 2017, Warhammer Underworlds has quickly established a reputation as the ultimate competitive miniatures game. Its combination of deck building and action-packed combat proved to be a hit, and last year Warhammer Underworlds: Nightvault brought extra tactical depth with the introduction of magic to the game. With fourteen different warbands (plus two more from Saturday!) and hundreds of different cards available to each, a myriad of playstyles and strategies can be used to ensure success, and no two games will ever be the same.

Now, via exclusive license with Steel Sky Productions, we’re delighted to announce Warhammer Underworlds: Online! Just like in the tabletop version, you choose your warband, build your deck and then face off in turn-based combat, aiming to win glory by achieving objectives and defeating enemy fighters. Warhammer Underworlds: Online has the benefit that you’ll never be short of an opponent – just pop online and find someone to play. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and try out new strategies. Plus you won’t have to chase any errant dice under the table.

Steel Sky Productions are eager to get the Warhammer Underworlds community involved with the game as soon as possible and so have opted for Early Access development. Early Access means that you’ll be able to play the game sooner and you’ll be able to experience new features as they are added. They will also be taking feedback during this Early Access cycle so you’ll have the opportunity to get your voice heard and to help ensure that Warhammer Underworlds: Online is the game that players want.

Early Access will launch later this year with two warbands available and, throughout the Early Access period, additional content and more warbands will be added to the game. We don’t want to give too much away at this point but we will say that the warbands for Warhammer Underworlds: Online won’t be released in the same order that they were for the tabletop version.
You can add Warhammer Underworlds: Online to your Steam wishlist now and if you want to be among the first to discover the identity of the starting warbands,* make sure you sign up to the Warhammer Underworlds: Online Discord server. For more information, make sure you visit the Warhammer Underworlds: Online website, like the Facebook page and follow the Twitter profile.

In the meantime, you can get in more tabletop practice with the two latest warbands for Warhammer Underworlds, Ylthari’s Guardians and Thundrik’s Profiteers, which are available in-store this weekend – pre-order them now.

* Just because they’re in the video, you shouldn’t assume that one of them will be Steelheart’s Champions!

We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Since Underworlds has always been a weird board game/video game hybrid...this actually seems like the correct medium for it. I was always kind of perplexed that they launched it as a tabletop game.

You beat me to posting this, red!

I am soooooooooo excited for this. Man, being able to play the game digitally, while also having the options of playing it as a miniatures game - I mean, what's not to love?

The main drawback to the game currently I've seen from people is not having regular opponents. This would solve that nicely . And as exliontamer notes, it really is perfect for a digital version!

Ohh looks interesting - just read the novel so quite up for this.

It would be nice if they provide a code of some sort from the board game products that you can use in the online version of the game...(similar to Pokemon TCG).

I'm not, it's basically the sweet spot between minis, card and board game with a low cost of entry. The only perplexing thing is why is there no 40K equivalent instead on many variants of the same thing: Shadow War Armageddon, Necromunda, Kill Team...

Wonder if this will kill interest in the tabletop version as no painting is required and probably much cheaper.

Provided they don't try to lock away cards via DLC as they did with the miniature version, I might be interested.

It's GW we're talking about. Of course there will be a paywall ...

You know there's an official online database of all the cards, right? That you could print off if you so wish.

That trailer alone evokes the feel of Shadespire better than a miniature game ever could. Will definitely be keeping an eye on this one.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

The software developer has mentioned paid expansions for new warbands but that cards releases should be free. That would be awesome, imo (rather than bundling them together like in the tabletop game).

Seems like a perfect fit though my excitement depends a bit on the availability of cpu opponents and how they monetize it.

I feel the exact opposite. I'm so glad this is finally an AoS game that's not on Mobile for once.

I'm glad it's not mobile as well, but no ps4 version means I have no means to play it. Maybe these games are too niche to perform well on console, I know the space hulk tactic playerbase on ps4 barely lasted a week.

It also depends on licensing to the consoles as well as increasing costs for making development for another system.

It adds up additional costs that a smaller studio may not be able to handle.

To quote Amelia from their dev team.

ey folks, just answering a few questions from earlier
"will the game be free or paid" from @I'm sorry Jon.
the game will be priced premium (aka paid) with no hidden costs. All players will recieve 2 warbands at launch and an extra 2 warbands during EA at no extra cost (4 total). After that new content will be distributed in 2 ways:
1. All players will receive continuous, free card releases at regular intervals (through updates)
2. Extra warband DLC expansions will be available for an additional cost

"do you plan to implement the same B&R list as tabletop?" from @teucro99
this is yet to be decided but we'll be working closely with the folk at GW to figure this out.

Very much this. One thing to keep in mind is that it's easier to develop a game for PC than it is for the consoles, who have their own set of hoops you need to jump through and certificates you need to adhere to to get a game green lit and accepted for said platform. Even when a game has been released on a console, you'll still need to go through those same hoops and certs whenever you want to release an update, patch or hotfix.

A good example of this hurdle is Payday 2, which struggled to get console updates out in a timely fashion due to how the whole process worked, Microsoft in particular was bothersome to deal with.

Well, that’ll help me get some games in, so I’m in favour!

Wonder if this is also a toe in the water for adapting the other games?

Titanicus is already in Early Access over at Steam and shaping up to be a great game. Though IIRC this is based on the older Titan Legions ruleset.
