With the arrival of Ninth, the cancellation of Guild Ball, and the ever-growing need to increase the oomph of of our language, the term “Dead” just doesn’t seem “Dead” enough. Whereas we might have, at one time, declared something a poor decision, perhaps even a disappointment, we now need even stronger language.

Regretfully, the term “Dead” seems to have had its day. Dead is dead. But where shall we go? DEADER seems to be forcing it. Similarly, DEADEST also seem forced, unless referring to something in an Undead state. So, taking a cue from Magic, the term for “Deader than Dead” is EXILED. It is the term used to described something so Dead, it no longer exists.

There is historical precedent for this, Ancient civilizations considered Exile to be a fate worse than death, with some historical figures preferring suicide to exile. In Magic, an “exiled” card can’t be targeted, whereas a dead card, in the graveyard, can still be targeted for effects, such as being revived from the dead. Exile is a state beyond death, where there is “no coming back”.

In an effort to increase hyperbole, and further desensitize our language to the nuances of existence, I hereby submit to the public that Dead is dead. Exlile should be the immediate go-to for any degree of perceived “worsening” of anything.

Dead is Exiled! Long live Exile!

Exile can also imply it's still alive and just gone elsewhere as well, I don't think it's stronger than dead but maybe a good description for some games which are dropped by their devs and kept going in older forms by the community.

Banished is another good word at least.

Well, in Magic exiled cards still do return to play in some ways, depending on why they have been exiled.

In Warmachine and Hordes, though, being Removed From Play is final (much more than just Destroyed which means there are a few ways for you to be revived).

Best not to copy the well meaning gonks at Wotc least we have to exile Crusade

I think maybe Legendary along the geedubs take, as in wont see anything new but perfectly playable amongst agreeable types would do

I like to call dead things..... Shovel Ready.

Also, when I was in the casket business, we referred to dead things as "Satisfied Customers"

Upon further reflection, I think *cremated* might be the term I’m after.

More dead than dead, a cremated body can’t be reanimated. Past the point of potential zombification, such an entity is “next level” dead.

I’ll have to share that around, see if I can get it to stick. Ie. “With the recent changes released in (next rules source), 40k is *cremated* never to come back.”

Maybe we should call it "Erased". Like kevin spacey was erased from that last movie he was in where they deleted him and reshot all his scenes with a different actor.

https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2017/11/kevin-spacey-christopher-plummer-ridley-scott-all-the-money-in-the-world

Likewise when hulk hogan was erased from wrestling.

Pete Rose has been erased from baseball effectively by being excluded from the hall of fame.

I suppose if it were feasible to do so stephen collins would be digitally replaced with a different actor in STTMP now. (I might not have that big a problem with it.)

It seems like its not just enough to kill a person's career now, it has to be erased.

Eeehhh... we aren't talking about actors careers, we're talking about how things in 40k are more thoroughly dead... though claiming a unit has been erased from a codex could certainly work.

"Did you see what they did to Cultists? They erased them from the codex!"

Not bad... but what is erased can be redrawn. If you *cremate* the paper it's on... you need new paper.

Well I was making a point that modern society has already advanced beyond dead and showing how we can use it as a model.

I remember there used to be imperial suicide bombers in 40k, but i guess they got erased when suicide bombers became a real life thing. They've sure been erased, which is a shame as they fit the 40k imperium mentality to a T.

Makes me wonder what the most erased thing in 40k is. How about that first edition ultramarine psyker who was a hlaf human half eldar hybrid?

The daemonculaba is probably one of the most erased things and probably most messed up 40k background I've heard of.

Was that the thing from Dead Sky Black Sun?

Sadly, I think the satire is on its way to being erased.

Erasing people is nothing new. The Ancients used to do it all the time. It was popular in Egypt, Greece, and Rome to have people's names removed from inscription, artwork, and other records when they fell out of favor with the ruling elite. I have a feeling i was also common all the way back to the Fertile Crescent by my own memory on the subject is hazy. Could be a good paper/thesis for someone.

Some other terms we could use would be "Annihilated" or "Atomized" or "Disintegrated"?

... I mean, Annihilated is to turn to "nothingness", yes?

I'll cede the point that that is even more dead than cremated, which leaves ashes.

I think I've got to give the deadest-dead to annihilated.

Ok since we're talking about 40k how about "vortexed".

Or "Excommunicated"?

Or "Squatted"?

This right here. This term's existed for things going the way of the dodo for years before this thread was but a gleam in greatbigtree's keyboard.

Yes, but at least one proper Squat came back for... Necromunda or was it Blackstone? And the Sky Dwarves from AOS are practically Squats.

So they can come back. Annihilated? No coming back. To become nothingness. I really do think that’s the *most* hyperbolic description.
