Interesting, originally I thought that the pose is like the Indomitus Captain, but the shield is too low and the sword is held at a different angle as well.
I guess GW can't resist throwing in more Lieutenant variants. I'm waiting for Codex SM: Lieutenants since you can practically make an army of them at this point

I was thinking that too, but looking at the available parts it doesn't seem to make reasonable sense.
- 'Hand resting on Shield' is only the Captain, but that is the wrong shield for that. (No Tactical Skeleton to scare the Xenos, Heretics and Witches.)
- Shield itself has scrollwork and purity seals that doesnt seem to match any other shield (PS could easily added, the scrollwork less so without green stuff.)
- Body has different gubbins than all the other bodies we have seen. (potentially addons?)

Why waste time on another blade guard.
Because the current BG Lieutenant sprue, at least in Indomitus, was attached to this guy. They likely want to release a BG Lieutenant that can be packaged by himself.

eh it's easy eneugh to produce those sprues by themselves I reckon, just produce em both and cut in half.
Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
While he looks nice and all, the difference between him and a normal BGV is what, shoulder markings? The skull in the backpack halo (which looks like the one on the chaplain)
The BGV multipart box is just a captain and 2x Lts. with basically no work.
If this guy is in face new, I’d not mind having him on the shelf. If he’s bundled with other stuff I need, that would be fine. But he really didn’t need to happen.

Honestly most Space Marine officers (Captains and Lieutenants) can be created out of regular boxes of the relevant unit type with little effort. If they'd simply include a few "extra fancy bits" in each regular box there'd be no need to buy any clampack characters for those at all. Add in further bits for a psychic hood, narthacenium, Skull helmet, crozius and banner and they'd have covered basically all types except special characters. Or sell an upgrade sprue with those bits - buy an additional box of intercessors and go! But that is obviously not what GW want, because selling expensive character models is very clearly an important business model.

Some of the specialists needed a bit of work, but I used to joke that you could just shake together a box of sternguard and vanguard veterans and a whole chapter’s worth of captains would fall out.
