Hi All,

Seriously want to do a Dark Mechanicus army to go with my CSM army. Initial thought was just a standard Mechanicus force and paint it black and throw in some chaos symbols. Same as a traitor guard army.

1. However, I'm unsure if there are actual rules in the Codex Adeptus Mechanicus for Dark Mechanicus?

2. Has anyone tried this before or have any good links to sites or blogs that feature the Dark Mechanicus?

3. Has GW made any attempt to flesh out this type of army?

thanks for the input

Sounds cool, would love dark mechanicus to be released as a faction and I think your only choice is to play a AD mech force call it dark, unless you find home brew rules

The only thing I would have in the back of my mind is that the Ad Mech and Dark Mech split 10k years ago and the Dark Mech have been living in the eye of terror coming up with god knows what diabolical stuff. Basically I think they would be so different that it just wouldn’t work in my head to use ad mech models

With the weird and wonderful possibilities of a chaotic organisation with no moral constraints and a dimension full of magic to play with, you could play them as whatever you want. For a recently turned group, you could do what is suggested and run a dark coloured spiky admech force.

Alternatively you could do a Daemonic force or a tyranid force with lots of weird gribbley monstrosities, or a marine force with bigger chunkier duders. Or even Orks, eldar or squats.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I just posted a batrep where I played against a friend who proxied CSM as Dark Mechanicus, but yeah, I'm with you in wishing there were unique rules for dark mechanicus and traitor guard (hopefully the later will be in the guard codex a la brood brothers)

My chaos army is made up of WC/FH, Traitor Guard & Dark Mech.

I just use the loyalist versions of the rules for Traitors & darkmech...until GW gets off their ass and actually supports the "Bad Guys"!!!

3. Has GW made any attempt to flesh out this type of army? Nope - mostly. Theres rules for playing Traitor Mechanicum in Horus Heresy, but not Dark Mechanicus in 40k. However, if you play a Daemon Engine heavy CSM army you are in effect playing a Dark Mechanicus army. Likewise, Chaos Knights - kinda.

As it stands? Dark Mechanicus have no real tabletop representation. Yes that is a genuine shame.

Because when you look at what is absolutely fine by the Ad Mech? There’s a helluva lot of room for serious body horror.

Forge World gave us a little in the 8th edition FW Chaos Index, in the Chaos Hellwright. A Hellwright is the Dark Mechanicum equivalent to a Tech Priest (the suggested model was Archmagos Draykavik), and the unit had the option of either the HERETIC ASTARTES or DARK MECHANICUS faction keywords, and it's repair ability could specifically work on DARK MECHANICUS VEHICLES, as well as HERETIC ASTARTES VEHICLES. So, I think there was a chance that fw could have given us some Dark Mechanicus rules, if gw hadn't stopped them from doing 40k rules after the Indexes. Otherwise, why add those keywords?
