Teaser for Toho's upcoming Godzilla film has been released.
It is releasing in Japan in November the Dec. 1st date is in NA.
Looks like it takes place immediately after WWII ended and Japan is dealing with the aftermath. We don't know the exact story or themes but seems a safe bet this a more serious Godzilla film.

If you look at the new Godzilla’s head, you’ll notice that his jaws open wider than on any of the others except for Shin Godzilla.

It says it somewhat in the trailer but there was a blurb in the press release but what it refers to is that at the end of WWII Japan was devastated and they were at the beginning of rebuilding, the zero, and then when it was thought that was as bad as it was going to be big stompy showed up and took them into the negative.

Showing this Friday in the US and I already got my tickets. If you want to see it on the big screen don't wait to long to get your tickets. I already had to rearrange Friday because the 8pm was almost sold out so I had to get 5pm tickets.

I was very impressed with this movie. Overall, I enjoyed Shin Godzilla better. But I think Godzilla Minus One has a much broader appeal and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if this film was liked better by most people. It’s more sentimental and definitely feels very reverential of the franchise. There are quite a few endearing and likable characters, many of whom feel like they stepped out of a Studio Ghibli film.
There are some fresh ideas, too. I really enjoyed the plan to defeat Godzilla (something rather anticlimactic in Shin Godzilla).The film also has some serious commentary about Japan past and present.
The melodramatic emotional beats and over the top acting are pretty typical of Japanese pop media and can be eye-roll-inducing. But the plot moves along nicely and is engaging even when Goji isn’t on-screen. As you can see from the trailer, the CGI effects are so-so. I was worried that would be a constant irritation while watching the film but it hardly bothered me at all. The entire film has a kind of “throwback” feel when it comes to special effects, where it doesn’t all quite look realistic so much as just slightly leaning more to homage of the scale models used in the past.

That is a pretty fair assessment. I would put this slightly ahead of Shin, as far as personal choice, but really they are both great films. From a purely cinematic standpoint Shin is probably the better but the characters here are miles ahead, not just of Shin but any Godzilla film. It is a Godzilla film where you might even say to yourself "can we hold off on Godzilla for a moment I want to see how they're doing?" The plan to fight Godzilla was great, using known science and not some magic super weapon was clever.
I really like this Godzilla design. Shin is more alien and monstrous but this Godzilla is very expressive, even if those expressions are "I hate you", "I am going to destroy all this", and "where's my coffee?" Having him be a mystery, with possible hints of backstory and motivation, was a smart choice. The scene where he is chasing the boat and you can see his face partially out of the water was really a great scene. You can see Godzilla's eyes following the boat and slight facial movements while the crew are trying to come up with ways to slow him down and solve the problems they run into really makes it quite engaging.

I kind of wish Noriko wasn't alive at the end. It felt like the filmmakers had put the work in to place the audience into a position to feel something personal when Godzilla was rampaging so that it is not just a generic "those poor people" but genuine anger at Goji. It is a more pleasing ending and I imagine most audiences will be happier with it, but it just undid some emotional ground work.
The other is that the end when they had the "oh Godzilla isn't really dead" showing him starting to regenerate: it was inelegant, unnecessary, and cheap. After making such a beautiful film and then tossing a slasher trope at the end seemed like it was a bit from a lesser movie.

Of course Godzilla is alive, which just goes to the addition being unnecessary. Not only that but you don't have to include sequel bait to have a sequel; the next film just as easily starts by showing the same thing. Sequels themselves aren't a slasher trope but ending with a scene showing that the monster isn't really dead is. It is incongruous with the rest of the film and, as said, inelegant. Also, as said, it is a nitpick and not something that ruins the film and makes it all terrible.

I have a couple of problems with the Noriko not-death sequence. First, how did Koichi manage to find her in Ginza with tens of thousands of people running and screaming in the chaos? This kind of coincidence is just lazy writing. Second, why couldn’t Noriko have thrown herself into Koichi so that they could both have dodged into the alley? This is just braindead melodrama; more laziness. These two hamfisted elements make Noriko’s survival seem corny and unearned.
But when we see Noriko in the hospital, I was placated by two details — her bandaged eye and the mark on her neck. The bandaged eye made me think of Serizawa from the original movie; remember, the eye-patch sporting mad scientist who invented the oxygen destroyer? That combined with that strange, scale-like mark on her neck makes me suspect that Noriko may have been regenerated by experimental application of Godzilla cells. The next and final shot of the movie is, after all, is Godzilla’s bubbling corpse.
I think the final shots here are setting up the idea that Godzilla’s attack has far-reaching consequences much like how people who survived the initial bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki suffered long-term effects. Or it could be setting up a sequel with a Resident Evil-style plot about creating bioweapons. That would be a natural antithesis to the theme in this film of putting weapons and sacrifice aside.
The fact that this film only had a $15 million budget is kind of insane. I would have guessed 50-75 but 15? That line producer out there doing serious work.

You can see the limitations if you look hard, for example regarding the sets. And some of the CG is questionable. But yes each and every yen is up there are the screen.
Contrast this to The Force Awakens. Where did the money go in that film?

My experience with foreign films is that they still remember, and have continued to develop, all the little camera magic tricks that American cinema stopped using because of monster budgets and advanced CGI. You don't have to find creative ways to hide the limitations of your budget is practically a blank check.

CGI is an obvious money sink but the sets (from burnt out rubble to rebuilding), all the water shoots, and period costumes seem like they would have been more expensive than they were.
