Automated Rubric Marine of Tzeentch
|
Mine started off with Arks of Omen: Chapter Approved, and I played a further 7 games of 9th edition with my TSons, GK and Chaos Knights before 10th edition was released. I'd already decided to retire my firstborn Ultramarines army, which was fortunate as half of it has now been removed from the game in 10th edition! I finished 9th edition with a 50% win rate across 34 games, so I'm happy with that.
With the start of 10th edition I bought the BRB and index cards for my 3 armies. I also treated myself to a second (!) Crusade Case for my GK, and a Daemon Prince for my TSons. I've now played a further 7 games of 10th edition, with another planned before the end of the year. So far I'm on a 50% win rate in 10th edition too which is a good sign. My last purchase was a TSons Sorcerer in Terminator Armour which I'm looking forward to trying out in-game soon.
I've only painted a TSons Land Raider and a GK Dreadknight this year so I definitely need to pull my finger out in 2024.
The highlight of my year was a trip to Warhammer World where I got to look around the exhibition as well as getting my TSons on the table in the gaming hall. It was also a chance to pick up copies of Rogue Trader and the two Realm of Chaos books which take me back to when I started playing 40k in the early 90's.
In summary, the best year since I came back to the game in 2018

Preparing the Invasion of Terra
|
Played a lot of HH2 this year, did a small Necromunda campaign, and have played a fair few games of 10th.
Got back to WHW after 2 (possibly 3) years for some HH and the finale to our Necromunda campaign.
I've mostly been content with refurbishing older models for my Deathwatch and Shattered Legions, plus I'm back to CSM adding units from each of the Vraks Chaos Warbands to run alongside my considerable R&H army.
Starting a new job in July has meant my hobby time is far less gaming and much more painting so I've been trying out techniques I've not done before or been doing projects based on schemes I want to try, which is where my Vraks additions came from.
Overall I think it's been a pretty good year.

Gaming wise my 2023 was pretty damned good.
Playing:
Between 9e & 10e 40k? I've played an average of 2 games per week.
Played a fair amount of AoS, Battletech, Bolt Action, and Kill Team v2 as well.
Played a few games of Moonstone, MCP, Batman, Flames of War, war Cry, & Gas Lands throughout the year. Also here in Oct+ a few of us dusted off our Black Seas stuff!
Answered an add on the shops Discord for a D&D group that was searching for a DM. So DM'd a campaign for them late spring through Oct.
My regularly scheduled Thur evening D&D/PF game keeps rolling on.
Played a fair amount of Boardgames (including axis/Allies) throughout the year.
Teaching:
I've taught nearly a dozen completely new players 40k (9e & 10e). And a similar amount of returning players 10e.
And another dozen or so D&D/PF & other stuff.
Hobby:
$$
Kind of an expensive year. Not the worst on record, but I definitely did not make my goal of spending less than I did in '22....
Built a few new forces (40k/Sigmar/Konflkt 47/Moonstone/MCP/Batman) from scratch.
Re-furbished my ages old Eldar & Tau.
Added 1k pts worth to both my Orks & Drukhari
I have a bunch of MTO 40k terrain on order.
I'll most likely pick up a set of Legion Imperialis before the month is out.
Building
Busy busy busy....
I've been continuously building & prime/base coating stuff (new kits &/or stuff from my backlog) Sunday evening - Wed evening ever since January.
I should end the year just slightly ahead on stuff built vs new stuff added.....
Painting
since Jan I've painted....13 models. Not one of them for a GW game. I do not foresee making it to 14 this year.

Been quite a busy year, juggling the hobby with a newborn and getting married.
- I expanded my Chaos Daemons vastly, growing from a 2k Tzeench force into approx. 6k of Tzeench, Khorne and Slannesh. Have significantly converted the Lord of Change and Keeper of Secrets, and painted up Ka'Band'ha as a Bloodthirster. Received Be'lakor for my birthday who is still unbuilt.
- Finished off my Thousand sons, decided to put them to one side while I focus on other projects.
- Stripped and repainted my 50 or so Hostile Environment Guardsmen for the crusade mentioned below.
- Won an award for my 1/48 Challenger 2, which was also featured in Airfix magazine (see below).
- Am currently in the final few games of a crusade, I'm running armoured Guard and am currently at 15-0-0 W-L-D.
- I'm also working on a number of scale model projects including:
- 1/72 versions of the main RAF heavy bombers in WWII, the Lancaster, Stirling and Halifax.
- Revell's very unique Eurofighter in 1/48. I saw this particular aircraft at RIAT this year and it's just gorgeous.
- A 1/35 model of the gargantuan Karl Gerat mortar, and the loader vehicle that accompanied it.
- Two 1/35 King Tigers
- A 1/35 model of the Soviet SMK, a unique twin-turret prototype.

I've almost repainted my entire IG, so that's a good year on the painting front. As for gaming, well, had a few spikes when we could gather and play, maybe 3 times, so i've played something around 10 games or so.
It got harder the last three months as I've got no holidays as an apprentice and so I couldn't match my pals studients' holidays.
Happy with it anyway.

Played some games with my 'Nids towards the tail end of 9th. It was fun, but I'm glad that 9th is behind us. The cognitive load of that game was nightmarish. The endless overlapping rules in every phase just wasn't a good play experience. Haven't made as big a dent on my pile of shame as I wanted to. Did paint up two table's worth of terrain to near completion though, so that was cool. Haven't had time to play BTech this year. Organising people has been very difficult. I've played one game of 10th, but will try to get another 2 in by year's end. Have played Warhammer Quest with some friends a couple of times this year. That was fun.

In 40K terms it was a good year:
- Painted about 1500 points of Dark Angels and Tempestus Scions.
- Played in a 9th Ed league
- Played in a 9th Ed tourney
- Played in a 10th Ed league
- Played in three 10th Ed tourneys
- Played about a dozen games of 10th Ed outside of tourneys/leagues
I have to admit I was not really feeling the 9th Ed mission paradigm towards the end and 10th Ed has been a breath of fresh air.
I also painted about 1500 points of Horus Heresy Dark Angels, 1000 points of Age of Sigmar and 30 models from Middle Earth battles (they were 20 years old). Played in:
- Two Horus Heresy Tourneys, Horus Heresy League and a Narrative Event
- Three Age of Sigmar tourneys and a League
So a great year of gaming but less than half the hobby production as the year before.

40K wise I played some games of OPR 2.0 and enjoyed them a lot. Space Marines vs Guard, and Space Marines vs. Demons.
Hobby wise, got some Tzeentch demons done to make that a fun game, and assembled my Wrath and Rapture Khorne and Slaanesh stuff. Will hopefully get to painting it soon. It'll be awesome to have a small force for all 4 Gods, especially for my plans to do the Siege of Terra.
Along with that, I assembled/converted and kitbashed my various chaos space marines into Word Bearers, including 40 cultists. Really pleased with how they all came out, I think Word Bearers are the most chaosy of chaos space marines and red vs blue (crimson fists) is a classic.
Still planning to turn a Mantic Warpath Plague army into a bunch of mutants and plague zombies for that army to really give it a 3e Lost and the Damned feel. When it's done, I'm gonna do a OPR Siege of Terra, but with Crimson Fists on the walls and Word Bearers, Mutants and Demons attacking.
During the summer I got back into Tolkien in a huge way and dug out all my old stuff and started fixing it up and touching up the paintjobs. Got the Fellowship and my Moria stuff done and have been teaching my buddy how to play SBG. He really likes it, so I'm working on a Grey Company force made from Rangers of Middle Earth for the foot rangers and Oathmark Human Cavalry with Oathmark Elf Light Infantry cloaked heads and cloaks from Fireforge Teutonic Knights for the mounted rangers. He's really excited by the idea of a force of mini heroes. I also bought some cheap toy dragons and wolves to make into 1st Age monsters.
Scenery wise I've got a bunch of gang boxes to make into sci fi buildings and I made a set of modular rivers from a rubber doormat and some caulking. Really happy with the rivers, proper good looking water features were kind of the missing link in my generic terrain collection.
All this despite having my first kid arrive this year! Great year for life in general and the hobby.
I've got loads of plans for next year - get those mutants done, maybe start on some Tyranids, get more scenery sorted and make progress on my Middle Earth projects...

10th edition turned out to be a big disappointment so I decided instead I'd just go and collect a full set of 4th edition compatible rulebooks. The collection is mostly complete at this point. I think I'm still missing the Blood Angels codex, the Chapter Approved Collections (technically only made for 3rd but still just neat books with some things that might still work fine), and then the Imperial Armour books, which are mostly quite pricey.
On the model side there have been a few instances of scrambling to buy a kit before it gets discontinued, particularly the not-that-old Assault Squad, and some of the old bikers (which are pretty dated but I still like them). I've also been trying to track down all of the old metal Tau models I never got when I was first getting into the game. At this point I think I have everything except old Shadowsun, old Farsight, the old Broadsides (but I did manage to get 3 of the Forgeworld XV-88-2s), and some of the kroot models. I'm pretty sure I have every ethereal, and also a helmetless pathfinder I haven't been able to figure out the origin of.
I haven't really painted anything since 2022, I should really get back to that.
Aside from the 4th edition nostalgia trip, the game that's mostly been on my mind is Horus Heresy. I've been slowly building up my Dark Angels for that.

As usual I didn't paint as much as I planned to do, but I'm still happy. Finished two squiggoths, some boyz, nobz, Boss on Squig and Kommandos. I'm doing a statistic every year on what I managed to paint, so I'll have exact numbers some weeks from now
Orks should be past 3000points now, which I find very satisfying considering I started the army in 2019 I think. Even did some painting sessions with my daughter(she's 3, so I painted and she sculpted stuff ).
Gaming wize OPR dominated the first half of the year, second half it were a couple games of 10th. Met a gaming buddy I hadn't seen since my Wedding 4 years ago because we both got children since then.
It still sounds a little strange but I think it's the reality post-corona: I had lots of fun with a Star Trek Alliances Solo campaign, creating my own rules and missions for it because I changed the scenario from later Dominion War to the Alliance between Tal Shiar and Obsidian order in season 3. Really renewed my interest in STAW.
I want to try out the Solo Mode from OPR as well, just didn't find the time so far.

This is in the 40k lobby so I assume the question is regarding 40k specifically.
I played 0 games. Was cautiously optimistic regarding 10th, like most of the base rules but it falls down on list building. I do have 2 sets of Leviathan Tyranids to my name.

Not so good.
Inflation/expenses/debt are killing me, so the budget is tight. I picked up the Gallaowdark box with Navy vs. Kroot and the Drukhari vs. Arbitrators. I also got the Inquisition Ashes of Faith KT box. Finally, I got the new Combat Arena for the Ambull.
I built 10 Battle Sisters, 10 Dominions, a Cannoness and a Palatine, and they are mostly painted. I partially assembled and mostly painted. With one week of dedicated effort, I could probably finish all 32, and if I did, it would make it my best painting year.
But I've been depressed about a fair bit of stuff, crazy busy at work, and a tiny bit hesitant about 10th... Like I'm willing to play what I can play for free, but I'm not sure about diving into Codex churn. I bought Marines and Admech for 9th, and Admech for 8th... But I didn't bother with either for 10th.
I haven't played 10th yet. I have Tyrannic War, and I'd play if I finish enough Sisters and Drukhari to pull it off... But neither army has a dex yet, so no bespoke Crusade content. The Drukhari Dex isn't even on the map yet, so there's no rush...
But I might try and get the 32 out of the way before the year ends- there will be stress free time between the holidays.
And if I do that, it might give me a push early in the new year, meaning that the armies will have more painted models so that the army can grow once Crusade resources do arrive.

I only painted five minis this year.
I had a lot of friends and family pass away this year, including my two best friends and my longterm GF dumped me for choosing my youngest daughter's needs over her (it was her Mum that passed away who was one of my best friends).
This will be changing next year though as my youngest daughter now lives with me and wants to paint minis with her Dad.

About 2,500 points built across 5 armies, but I think only a third got fully painted.
Played 27 9th ed tournament games then 20 10th ed tournament games. I don't keep track of casual gaming, but I think I played about 10 casual 10th ed games in the latter half of the year.
My closest FLGP is booming with 10th ed as the main cause of the boom. Met some fun new people. My other FLGP started running tournaments this year and is also booming from 9th/10th ed. Met some more fun new people.

Mostly good- I got bummed out because I had to use my wet palette for college painting class, so I couldn't do minis. (Hence dropping out of the painting challenges around October) I tried a "Use nothing but the airbrush on minis" experiment and THAT didn't go so well. But- rediscovered some old tricks, like the mineral spirits/ enamel blackline/ wash method that'll speed up doing orks. College was hectic, but I was able to get praise for my 40k themed fan art in class. And last but not least, I pestered Dad into buying me a 3d printer for Xmas on black friday deals and I feel like the fat kid who got handed the keys to the candy store!

Not a bad lot of paint down, but not quite what I was hoping for. I wanted to get more 3rd company models down, just got 6 done. (Three more are WIP, but might not make it by end of year, goal was thirteen)
Good progress on the nids, got most of the old plastic (and lead) out of the way to make way for the new plastics.
Would have like more diversity, but is what it is.
Only got one game of 10th in so far. Just having trouble getting to the FLGS.
I’ve not formally looked at my goals for the year, but it looks like I only am going to make half of them this year. Not that I was expecting 100%, but normally I do better.

Played:
40k 9th - 0 games
40k 10th - 6 games
Conquest TLAOK - 15 games
Warmachine Mk IV - 3 games
Age of Sigmar - 5 games
Horus Heresy - 7 games
Battletech - countless, currently in a league
Painted:
40k - Ork Kommandos, 10 Beastsnagga Boys
Conquest - 2300pts of Wadrhun, 1000pts of Dweghom
Warmachine Mk IV - 25 pts of Dusk
Age of Sigmar - 3300 pts of Kharadron Overlords
Horus Heresy - Leviathan Dreadnaught ( IW), 10 Tyrant Siege Terminators
Battletech - at least 600 tons of Clan Sea Fox
Thoughts:
Unlisted, painted a few commissions here and there, and a couple mini's for various board games. Most of my 40k gaming happened within the first month of 10th edition dropping (maybe 1 game later in the year). Still waiting on more codex's to give 10th another shot before completely writing it off. Conquest was the big stand-out for me this year, and I am anxiously waiting to see if GW's the old world has any chance to compete; I suspect TOW will be a worse game overall, but brand loyalty and nostalgia will give it a successful launch.
In the last 2 months my group has picked up Warmachine Mk IV and Battletech, and I don't think we've put either down. We haven't gotten as much WM4 gaming in as we would like due to some "logistical errors" but we are looking forward to getting a league going at the start of the new year.
All in all, I went into 2023 with the goal of downsizing my footprint in GW games and wanted to branch out into other IP's. I am no longer interested in having multiple armies for the same game, and now enjoy having one army for many games. Sold off 7 armies (sigmar and 40k) this year, down to 2 40k armies (never getting rid of me orks or death korps), one sigmar army (the KO), and have picked up 2 new games (Battletech and Warmachine). All-in-all I would say a pretty successful hobby year!

A rough year for gaming. Pretty early on, the best store I've ever played at closed down and the community has really struggled to find a home since. It really messed up a lot of my plans and a couple games I ordered dropped out of regular play while others became a lot more popular which kind of ruined my paint queue.
What I painted
7 Imperial Knights
18 Battlemechs
32 Judgement champions
21 Marvel CP characters
39 Star Wars Shatterpoint characters
19 Star Wars Legion characters
2 Kitsune for Bushido
77 Orks for 40k
3 Guild Archers for Malifaux
7 M&SU Malifaux miners
25 Mk4 Warmachine models
8 Legacy Warmachine models
A little lighter than I often do, though I put a lot more effort into terrain this year that ate up a lot of time. Also tried to make more time for other things and without a consistent place to play definitely didn' thave quite the same drive.
What I played
Start of the year MCP was our most dominant system that saw quite regular play. That's largely remianed true, with it being one of the games that found a semi reliable home and still has a scheduled night. It has lost a little thunder after the release of Shatterpoint, which has proved incredibly popular and quickly carved out its own night for itself.
Warmachine has had an interesting year. In January the hype around the new edition was building but then it just kind of fizzled out without new releases to pull in new players and a scenario packet that just wasn't suited for the game changes. I'd largely written it off until 2024 but suddenly in Sept things started falling into place and people are excited again. We'll see if that holds up, but I've played a lot of it recently and overall quite happy with it.
Finally got my hands on Judgement and have absolutely adored it as much as when I'd demoed the first edition. It's definitely suffered from not having a reliable place to play and pull in players, but since it now requires relatively little to play it's seen quite a few games just out of my collection. It's kind of eaten up a lot of space I had for things like Malifaux or Bushido, which have sadly fallen off hard.
40K might also be one of the more interesting games this year. It had finally started to build a consistent player base locally (its always had a large community that doesn't play all that often) and that community was able to get picked up by one of the smaller remaining stores and become one of the few games that sees consistent play now. I kind of waited on 10th and have been really happy with the changes enough that I added an Ork army to my collection, though it's still not my favorite gaming experience. Might put more effort in next year as I always do when the community is in upheaval.
Still, mostly sad that its become a lot more challenging to play things like Infinity or Monsterpocalypse. Setting up a game is just a lot more work and I've had to divert a lot of energy into maintaining the community rather than playing in the sand. On the plus side, its given me incentive to get back into designing tables and really enjoying working on terrain for a change.

Painted my Lumineth Realm Lords in the colours of the Transylvanian Infantry from break of XVth and XVIth century. Had to cut some stuff, learned how to resculpt chainmail etc. No where near masters of the craft, but very happy about how the army looks like.
Played a TON of AoS and OPR with my LRL. Played some w40k at the start of 10th, and lets just say I did not like the core rules, I REALLY didn't like the GK rules (had more fun in 9th and it is not like that rule set was good for a terminator army). Because of university and work, I had to decide what hobby I can do and w40k is getting cut more and more each month. In december I played 0 w40k games. I think I played maybe 2 games the month before.
Also for help at the store with some rowdy non customers from the east, I gained the ability to not pay for the gaming time and for my names day (june) was suprised by the store owner with a double gift. The british commando/ally and two different Sherman kit. And now I am learning how polish uniforms of the Maczek division looked like in WWII.
All in all a very busy year. With less time to play, but in general I am happy. Maybe not as much because of w40k, but rather other things.
