There’s a Strong Chance ‘Shogun’ Will Return for Season 2 - The Hollywood Reporter

There’s a strong chance that FX’s critical darling Shōgun will return for a second season.

Hiroyuki Sanada has signed what sources say is an “if-come” deal that would see the series star and producer return, should FX successfully jump through the multiple hoops required for a second season of the limited series. That means if FX can sort things out behind the scenes and formally greenlight a second season, Sanada would return to the franchise.

Sources stress there are other extenuating circumstances that FX and CEO John Landgraf are attempting to sort through to pave the way for a renewal. Reps for FX declined comment.

They'll be missing two of their key stars (Anna Sawai and Tadanobu Satō) that made Shōgun that I don't know if a second season would see the same success.

But there can't be a S2. That's it. The book is finished.

They should just make a sequel anyway, with four time-traveling ninja reptiles.

Since Shōgun is part of a six-book series, why not adapt the next book instead?

Honestly, all things considered, that's a whole nothing burger of an article.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just went ahead with it all anyway because cash money but it would be nice to see some integrity for a change.

I recently finished shogun on Audio book.
I wish they had just done the book over several seasons instead of 8 hours. If it had been an original idea for the show it would have been nicer but as an adaptation is is missing a large amount of meat.

The rewards of tolerance are treachery and betrayal.

I just added up the run time for each of the episodes on IMDb and it's close to ten hours, plus everything I've seen says it was a fairly faithful adaptation of the original work (having not read the book myself).

I said 8 because I forgot there were 10 episodes. Just then I thought there were only 8.
The book is superior. Both mini series are nice companion peace's. I like the new series for the politics and plots, all the stuff we didn't get from the first series. Blackthorn in the new series was a shadow of his character in the book. I think you can find the audio book on audible. It's quite long but worth it.

Some of the things bot series missed a short list off the top of my head in no particular order.

Oil seller, the flower viewing ceremony but more importantly the emperor's allowance, Rodrigues planning and failing to kill Blackthorn, Lord Yabu vs a young Ronin and Blackthorn's actual reason for seppuku and his rebirth. Blackthorn thinking like the Japanese, his attempt anyway. Just to name a few. I know thee is a lot more that I am just forgetting.
Hope this tempts you into giving the book a try.

Recently finished rewatching old tv series, and the only thing I lack is the book so it will be on my to do list for sure.

‘Shogun’ Seasons 2 and 3 in the Works at FX, Hulu - The Hollywood Reporter

It’s official: FX and Hulu are prepping not one but two more seasons of breakout drama Shōgun.

The Disney-owned network said Thursday that it is teaming with the estate of author James Clavell to extend Shōgun for two additional seasons. The company noted that both seasons are in development, meaning that a two-season renewal depends on how the creative comes in.

A writers room is being assembled and will open in the summer to explore a continuation of Shōgun beyond Clavell’s original novel. Shōgun’s creatives, including co-creators, exec producers and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, exec producer Michaela Clavell as well as star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada are all involved with the development.

Shōgun, which wrapped its season in late April, ranks as FX’s most-watched show ever (based on global hours streamed).

Still a bit on the fence about this.

As someone who greatly enjoyed the show, but found the ending a bit meh, but also understands “that’s the book, shut up, nerd”?

I welcome a second and subsequent series. I want to know more about what followed historically.

So what it's just a fiction telling of the rise of Tokugawa?

Interestingly, I found the ending extremely fitting for the story, so there's that ^^.

I'm not opposed to more japanese period drama per se, but without Mariko and Yabushige it will be harder.

At this point I think I'd prefer to see either some other story or maybe more of a prequel.

Considering it was only partly the book and things were out of sequence.
Given that unless they have notes to follow which I doubt, I hope they go off the rails. Bring Lord Yabushige back as a master ninja and low and be hold he never died it was a perfect body double and we can see him killed off at least two more times. I'm referencing a character called Tenkai from the anime Dagger of Kamui. Totally worth a watch. It's quite the story. Tenkai masquerades as a Budist monk until the end.

So just do that and go nuts with the story because it wont be cannon so who cares as long as it is enjoyable.

As far as the history, there are a lot of videos on youtube discussing the cross over to the actual history and which character was which person in real life.

I will keep my expectations very low so that I can be surprised if the next season is any good.

Edit, link to Dagger of Kamui.

There are places they could go and things they could do, and the series does seem to be setting up for some of them. Notably the last episode sets up several allusions to the Battle of Sekigahara which secured Tokugawa (Toranaga) rule of Japan. Tokugawa and his airs brought about a range of social changes in Japan, many of them motivated by getting the warrior class and a large number of battle experienced combat veterans under control and stop them from making trouble throughout the country. These reforms would define a lot about what became the popular image of the Samurai and Japanese culture.

Adams, who Blackthorn is based on, was retained by Tokugawa to help modernize Japanese ship building. He would also be the one charged with opening trade with the Dutch, as at that point in time the Portugese had effectively monopolized trade with Japan (even trade with China happened through the Portuguese as incidents during the Sengoku period resulted in Ming China cutting off official trade with mainland Japan and Hideyoshi's rule had further alienated the Chinese). Adams also helped open relations with New Spain by acting as a middleman between Tokugawa and a shipwrecked crew that included the governor of the Philippines.

They could probably do a pretty cool series about the San Juan Bautista. Adams was not directly involved in the ships construction, but it was based on shipbuilding knowledge Adams brought to Japan, and it was the ship used by Date Masamune to send a mission from Japan to Europe who ultimately met Pope Paul V before returning to Japan.

The Shimabara Rebellion could also make a good basis for a plotline, as it would continue the threads of story about Christianity in Japan and the tumultuous end of the Jesuit's mission in the country.
