I thought it might be good to have a thread where we could talk about our latest games, what worked, what didn’t, etc.
I played my buddy last night in a 2000 point game. Blood Angels (with allied Knights) vs Solar Auxillia (also with allied Knights.)
I decided to try something a little different to my usual Airborne Assault Marine force, and eschewed all but one flyer from the list, instead opting for dreadnoughts, dreadnoughts, and more dreadnoughts! (12 Contemptor, 3 Leviathan, and 4 Deredeo.)
Also used Terminators for a change as they don’t normally find a place in my lists. An armoured company filled out the rest of the marine force, with a pair of Knight Styrix and accompanying Moirax talon to continue the stompy Walker theme of the army.
My friend bought a large Pioneer company made up of mixed units of Tercios, Ogryn, and Veletari. Supported by a variety of non super heavy Auxillia tanks, and a pair of Acastus knights.
It was a really fun game, and we called it a draw after turn 3, having run out of time. The Knights and Dreadnoughts did way better than expected, with the knights in particular being pretty nasty to massed infantry with their volkite weapons.
Might have to give this fun list another go at some point.

Unfortunately no photos but I played with my Night Lords against a themed Solar armoured and artillery force.
I will be honest the Basilisks are pretty nasty, only some bad rolls at the start of the game stopped them being as effective as they might have been. The problem for that force was that it was too slow and I managed to spam units onto objectives - they then took a hammering (and eventually the Basilisks started doing their thing of erasing a unit per turn) - but by this time I had an unassailable points lead. I am not sure that sort of force is viable for winning games until there is a future expansion which changes the victory points away from cumulative scoring, and towards something where a score benchmark is required and you can get some from breaking units (this is how static or slow armies managed to win in other Epic versions - old Squat or IG armies for example, which relied on artillery and massed fire in place of speed).
Also I got to use the NL special Legion ability for the first and only time, so I'll say its now almost entirely useless rather than entirely useless

Our last game, back in early October, I tried an Arvus mounted infantry force backed up with a generous helping of Russ & Macador variants.
My opponent for this one brought his usual crapply built Nightlords list. But now with Spartans!
He doesn't really understand how to build effective forces in this game & has an eclectic "buy some of (but not really enough of) everything" approach. His only real goal seems to be to field a legal enough list to allow him to use a Reaver Titan.
Field the Reaver - that's the beginning, middle, & end of his strategy & tactics.
(And no, all attempts to help him in these areas have mostly failed)
So the resulting Solar victory was almost a foregone conclusion...
The Avus fleet allowed the Solar to seize many of the objectives quickly.
The titan was mauled by its own pts worth of tanks
One bright moment in the game occurred when the foe thought outside the box concerning how to contain a rampaging ogryn hoard.
He used all of his rhinos to essentially encircle the ogryns. But he didn't charge. Thus I had to waste a turn destroying rhinos vs the objective holding marins I'd intended to.
Now if only he'd make a decent list....

I am going to use Basilisks again this weekend. But I only see them effective as Anti-tank artillery, useful against high-value tanks and super heavies... against other targets they seem like a waste of points...
Regarding scenarios and missions, we are playing combined missions of Tallarn+rulebook. I encourage you to do this, otherwise infiltrating and/or fast infantry autowin the game in turn 2.
What I mean is: objectives that give points (like in the rulebook), + points for destroying more detachments than opponent that turn (Tallarn) + points at the end of the battle for reaching the enemy's deployment area (Tallarn). I assure you it improves the game!!!

Haven’t got round to this with the current edition, but quite a fun thing to do is to play missions from the previous games i.e. the 2nd edition setup with 6-8 objectives and points for destroying units where you win if you have a certain amount of VP’s and the Epic Armageddon tournament game with 3 objectives, kill the biggest unit and something else that isn’t coming to mind.
I’ve tried these with other systems and a good mission gives a good game regardless, likewise a (40k) tournament Cleanse mission also works. Table quarters, win by holding at the end, 1 for your deployment, 3 for sides, 5 for enemy deployment, think it has “kill-points” as well, 1 VP per 100 points of unit broken.

Yeah, good missions can work across game systems and variety is great in any setup. Even if I agree that E:A's tournament scenario mentioned above is an absolute banger (five victory conditions, fulfill at least two and more than your opponent from turn three onwards and you win: hold their depo objective, hold any two objectives on their half, hold all three on your half, kill their most expensive formation and keep your half clear from non-broken enemies), I still want to push folks at the club to play all sorts of wacky scenarios in addition to it.

So far we have been mixing the missions and scoring system from the different books, and it feels way better than the plain BRB missions.
