How do!

Looking to prick brains on this one, in the hope we’ve some knowledgable peeps that might advise if good intentions = good idea.

Essentially, I make a monthly donation to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. And I’m thinking of donating a copy of HeroQuest. Their website explains any such physical donations are welcome, but must be brand new, and sent to their nominated address. So far, so good. And of course, the requirement for Brand New is due to hygiene.

And that’s left me wondering if such a physical donation, whilst well intentioned as a time consuming attention holder, might not actually be suited, due to risk of infection via the models being repeatedly handled.

GOSH Charity webpage wrote: What toys and games we can accept
If you would prefer to donate a gift to the children at the hospital, please see below for a handy guide that the hospital’s Play team has put together. The list consists of toys, games and presents that the seriously ill children and young people cared for at GOSH always appreciate.

Please note the following:

due to strict infection control measures in place at the hospital, we cannot accept any gifts in person at the hospital
we are only able to accept items that are brand new and in their original packaging
we are unable to accept any used or second-hand items, (including toys, games and clothing), books, soft toys or knitted items or anything that has been made at home
we are unable to accept toys with button batteries or magnets
Vouchers and gifts are accepted in person or via the post at the GOSH Charity offices. Please advise us if you intend to visit in person so that we can arrange a time between Monday and Friday, 9:30am-4pm.

Any thoughts?

Do you mean in the sense that something like a miniature piece would be passed from person to person and therefore be an infection risk?
And not very easy to disinfect due to all of the crevices and detail on a miniature (contrast say with a chess piece or a meeple from a boardgame?)

It might be worth calling them and explaining what you are trying to donate - they are probably used to such things and will know what is suitable or not. For example, would the kids be in a position to have three or four of them around a table with the game? (Perhaps if they were outpatients?)

It's a lovely, thoughtful idea in any case and can see how it would go down very well.

I will sometimes sell stuff on eBay and you can set a sales % to go to a particular charity, which is another way of doing it, although without such a direct and observable impact.

It depends.

I work for a charity. We get given all sorts of stuff we can't use, or is unsuitable.

Ask them.
