Explore deeper into Warhammer with these upcoming books from DK

Spoiler:

During Warhammer Relics we previewed all sorts of great new Warhammer merchandise, including two new books from our licensed partners at DK to complement the fantastic Warhammer 40,000: The Ultimate Guide. We’ve got some more details from both books today, as well as the announcement of another treat.

Warhammer 40,000 Character Encyclopedia

The vast roster of characters who populate the grim, darkness of the far future is one of the defining features of Warhammer 40,000. From fallen Primarchs and vile tyrants, to grizzled commanders, demigods and and other yet more enigmatic entities, there’s an exhaustive rogues’ gallery – and the forthcoming Warhammer 40,000 Character Encyclopedia covers over 120 of them in glorious detail.

“Writing the Warhammer 40,000 Character Encyclopedia was a great opportunity to revisit some of the greatest heroes and villains of the 41st Millennium, drawing on more than 30 years of stories in books, animations and other media to comprehensively document scores of iconic warriors,” explains chief loremaster Wade, who helped write the book. “Whether you’re a new recruit to the galaxy of war or a seasoned veteran, I hope you’ll find something to inform and inspire you!”

Copies will also come with a free miniature of one of the characters covered in it, but you’ll have to wait and see exactly who. It is available for pre-order right now.

The Art of Warhammer Video Games

Fans of Warhammer have been enjoying video games for over three decades, and this book is dedicated to the art of these many titles, covering games from times gone by and the present day. To give you a glimpse at what you can expect, here’s some spreads from the original and iconic Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.

“Authoring a book about video games while working on a video game has meant my life has been pretty busy as of late,” explains Andy Hall, who’s worked on many of these titles. “However, it's been surprisingly easy writing well over 20,000 words covering decades of Warhammer games, as I've played most of them – from the very first Space Hulk game on the Commodore Amiga all the way up to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. I can't wait for readers to join me on this epic journey.”

Each copy of the book will come with codes that can be redeemed for free copies of Warhammer: Vermintide, Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector and Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin which can be validated through Steam and Greenman Gaming, plus an unlock code for Lieutenant Titus in mobile game Warhammer 40,000 Tacticus. You can pre-order it today.

There’s one more book to announce – a must have for all fans of Space Marines.

Words of War: The Miniature Book of Space Marine Quotes

Full of epic quotes from your favourite Space Marines with dynamic photography to boot, this pocket-sized book should be out just in time for Christmas…

All three books will be available later in the year.

The Big Book of Space Marine Quotes does feel like they're scraping the bottom of the barrel...

Free miniature with the book is really interesting, depending on what it is, it might be worth a good chunk of the book RRP.

Probably a primaris lieutenant, though.

Interesting that it comes with a free miniature, considering it's specifically a "character encyclopedia" that suggest a named character - but character miniatures alone seem to sell for around the same price as the book does, so I'm not sure on that.

The "book of quotes" seems a bit strange though, does anyone actually buy stuff like that to the extent it's a worthwhile idea for a book?

I'm guessing it'll be Lieutenant Titus, or one of the ones they made up for the Hachette Partworks.

I'd assume it's a character in the book, and I guess some unimportant 'generic' named character from the partworks magazines or whatever would do while not being a usually expensive miniature. Still, those ones were meant to be exclusive to that magazine.

There's more 'cheap' characters than I thought!

Looking at GW's UK site - Cypher is the cheapest "Epic Hero" at £24, followed by Titus, Khârn & Haarken Worldclaimer at £26, then Typhus, Fabius Bile & Lucius the Eternal at £28. It then jumps to Deathleaper at £40.

Searching for other plastic Characters has Inquisitor Greyfax for £20 and Wolf Lord Krom for £21.50. Darkstrider, The Masque, The Changeling, Watch Captain Artemis, Lord Inquisitor Kyria Draxus and Ulrik the Slayer are all £24. Grand Master Voldus is £25. Snikrot, Ûthar the Destined & Aestred Thurga are £26. Belial & Asmodai are £27.50. Dante, Azrael, Castellan Crowe & Zodgrod Wortsnagga are £28. Lelith Hesperax, Master Lazarus, Mephiston, Ragnar Blackmane, Iron Father Feirros, Adrax Agatone, Tor Garadon, Kayvaan Shrike, Tigurius, Kor'sarro Khan, Drazhar, Inquisitor Coteaz, Astorath, Sanguinor, Lemartes, Orikan the Diviner & Imotekh the Stormlord are all £28. Grimaldus, Helbrecht, Shadowsun & Junith Eruita are £34. Mozrog Skragbad is £37.

Personally I think a voucher for money off a named character would be a better way of doing it - £28 off would get you most of those.

Depends how deeply they cut to harvest those quotes, if we can get some classics from Rogue Trader, or if they're all soundbites from recent Horus Heresy novels. A 'thought for the day' calendar would be very interesting if they were of high quality.

Given that the iconic quote they chose for Morvenn Vahl in the example page from the cahracter book was her classic, iconic and unique warcry of "For the God-Emperor!", I'm not too hopeful.

Free model is tempting depending what it is but its very likely a Space Marine of some kind. Still could be neat even though I suspect the book is more "coffee table book" for most of us and its a bit of a shame that they are going purely with photos and not artwork of the characters as well as.

The Art of Video games could be cool and the most likely one I'd pick up - always neat to see new art and interpretations and such¬!

Unfortunately to me it looks like a minimum effort collation of GW's website images and an AI summary of the marketing blurb. I mean the Lionel one even has the 3 different head options from the kit and parrots the different loadouts available form the character sheet.

It also seems to just be the standard advertising paint job, rather than bringing together some jaw dropping versions from Golden Demon etc.

The only reason to go for it really is if you want the model that comes with it I think.

If it was a true collation of deep lore from wide sources, and even generation of some new linking stuff then that would be awesome. As it is, it is not rocking my world.

Yeah they could have gone further with it - its very coffeebook table type. Again if they threw an amazing Tyranid, Eldar or similar model in the deal I'd likely get it for the model but if its just a regular marine it would have to be one insanely outsanding sculpt.

I'll look at these when more is released, but I'm not holding out a ton of hope for being worth purchasing.

Bought the "Ultimate Guide" for about half price and thought that it was just about worth it. At full price I would have been disappointed.

The Character Encyclopedia has the most interest for me, but color me skeptical for now.

This just seems to be the sort of thing this publisher does with their "character encylopedia" books, unfortunately - they're more intended for people new to the hobby or just with a general level of knowledge, than being the sort of in-depth lore thing GW themselves might do.

Their 2 star wars ones for the High Republic, and the Clone War series, are very similar for example. Existing art, with a few paragraphs to summarize the thing, a quote and pointing out some small details.

I have a feeling that people will buy it for the miniature and then dump the book onto the internet.

Assuming it's a Space Marine (and it probably will be), I'd certainly be willing to pay low-dollar for a copy of the book sans-figure. Heaven knows I've got zero use for another random marine hero.

Well, now that "Space Marine: The Board Game" appears to be OOP, I guess they needed to do something with that tooling.

I bought a stack of the games on clearance from Target, mostly for the boards. Selling just the Titus mini (most sold overseas) covered the cost of the game.

You mean like the individually boxed release of Titus they already did?

Wow, I had no idea. I guess this would explain....

... Why it was so easy to sell the figure separately for 25-30 bucks.

What an overpriced crock. Though, if you're used to GW pricing I suppose it makes the book a very tempting offer.

"Buy a sale-priced LT Titus and get a free book!"
