When my buddy from a Magic the Gathering Twitch Stream bought a 3d printer, he became interested in WH40K and decided to start his first army, Ultramarines.

He offered to trade my time painting for 3d printing and thus I built up a collection of Battletech combat vehicles.


I haven't painted Space Marines for awhile now, but at one point I had painted almost all of the major Chapters both Loyalist and Chaos.

And yet one Chapter I hadn't painted yet was the Ultramarines even though I fondly remember wanting to from owning White Dwarf 98




Here is an example of a 3d printed Space Marine, the helmets give them a very gothic in appearance!




A squad of 3d printed Space Marines, I have to admit I was surprised that they are very highly detailed



More to come as we eagerly anticipate starting a new project, expecially one that I haven't done before!

My buddy printed out nine ( 9 ) Units with a total of 39 miniatures to be painted :

1. Captain

2. Chaplain

3. Techmarine

4. Aggressor Squad - 3 Flamestorm

5. Aggressor Squad - 6 Boltstorm

6. Intercessor Squad - 10

7. Scout Squad - 10

8. Eliminator Squad - 3

9. Eliminator Squad - 3

* plus Extra Eliminator Sergeant



These miniatures were packed in paper towel and shipped to me via good old Canada Post:




The first order of business was to prep the miniatures by washing with warm water and dish soap:




The miniatures were then laid out on towels to dry overnight :




I observed that the unit of Eliminators had already been primed with an airbrush :




The entire lot of miniatures was left to dry overnight, anticipating the next step of spray priming due to warm weather!

With excellent weather we start spray priming using Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch brand Flat Black.

Here are some Primaris Aggressors and a Primaris Captain :

Next update will be starting to paint the Blueberries ... i mean Ultramarines!

PAINTING DAY 1:

I primarily use a mix of flip-top lid GW paints, but I will be listing the colours used.


I chose to start off by painting the 9 Aggressors, which were to be divided into 2 units.
This was because I hadn't painted GW miniatures in awhile, I can't remember as I had been working on Battletech.

Also I am lazy, as there were less miniatures in the Aggressor Squads.
The Aggressors also appeared to be chunky and thus easier to paint.

One unit of 3 with Flamestorm Gauntlets, and the remaining 6 with Boltstorm Gauntlets.

Basecoat: Macragge Blue
Gold Details: Auric Armour Gold
Sergeant helmets: Mephiston Red & Corax White



Then the Techmarine, Captain and Chaplain were painted using the following paints:

Chaplain Bone details: Bleached Bone base, Flesh Wash, Wraithbone layer
Captain with Ork on base: Waaagh! Flesh base, Warboss Green layer

Metallic detail was picked out with Chainmail




With 9 Aggressors complete and three Character models underway, our next update:
we start on the 10-man Primaris Intercessor Squad !!!

We initiate painting on a 10-man Intercessor Squad by breaking the work into two 5-man squads.
Starting with the Sergeant and four Space Marines first then a second set of five allowed a nice break.

Here are the first five Intercessor Space Marines including the Scout Sergeant :




The second five Intercessor Space Marines after basecoat painting :




Painting the Intercessor Squad weapons with Mephiston Red and Chainmail :




Finally we applied stock Space Marine Decals to the Intercessor Squad :




Next update will be the 10-man Scout Squad, which interestingly has several weapons options including a Sniper Rifle and Missile Launcher!

Those are some really cool Marines, some look better that the stock Marines.

The designs however are from a company called Puppetswar : https://puppetswar.eu/resin-models-and-bits.html

They offer aftermarket physical resin products as well as STL files which are officially licensed and thus available without restriction from GW.


Here are the first 5 Scout Space Marines.

Cloth uniforms were painted with a basecoat of Mechanicus Standard Grey, then Layer painted Corax White
The bare Scout heads were painted Kislev Flesh, then Flesh Wash




The second 5 Scout Space Marines, including weapons:




Finally we applied stock Space Marine decals to the Scout squad:





And now we have completed all of the miniatures that were spray primed flat black, a total of 32 miniatures painted in 8 days!

We continue working on the Ultramarines army by painting up 2 Primaris Eliminator squads with 3 different Sergeant weapon options.

I mentioned previously that the miniatures delivered to me were pre-primed white and black with an airbrush:




This made basecoat painting easy peasy, I decided not to paint the weapons Mephiston Red to match the rest of the army:




Finally the camo cloaks were painted with Citadel Technical Paint Nighthaunt Gloom.

Although this paint was formulated for an ethereal, ghostly glow I found that when mixed with a little Lahmian Medium the Nighthaunt Gloom provided the perfect mottled camouflage for the cloaks!




Here is the mighty Ultramarines army in its' entirety, ready for basing:

Today we break out some materials to complete the bases on the army.



I will be using two different types of Woodland Scenics ballast along with Gamer Grass 5mm Autumn tufts.

Woodland Scenics - Medium Ballast: Cinders

Woodland Scenics - Course Ballast: Iron Ore

White PVA glue was used to glue the ballast to the bases and allowed to dry, then Gamer Grass was applied:




After the ballast was dry, it was painted with Crafter's Acrylic Black paint and allowed to dry.
After drying, the ballast was highlighted with Mechanicus Standard Grey then Ulthuan Grey:
