Looking at my miniature collection I realized that there are some batches that just never will get their final paint job. One such "unit" is a 200-mini strong imperial citizen militia/mob. I have painted a hundred - but lost interest in the rest. Many of the remaining minis is painted to a very low standard and in desperate need of a repaint. Recently I found a product on the 'net (at Swedish reseller http://www.unispel.com): Fanatic Army Painter ( http://www.fanaticarmypainter.dk/) and thought I might try it. Fully aware that it probably was just a rebranded (and *very* expensive) can of wood stain I ordered it. It arrived and I had a go. See below for pics before and after. In order to shake away the wood stain (really thick, kinda syrup) I constructed a simple tool. I took a bolt and superglued two neomydium magnets on (so the bolt would be able to hold my minis - which all is based using a washer). Then I cut a hole in the lid of a plastic icecream box so that I would be able to reuse the paint that didn't stick to the mini. Worked really well. Comments, suggestions?

Excelent effect as usual. I'm always impressed with the dipping effect. I do a wash of rubbing alcohol and water colors and it ends up looking pretty much the same. The only difference is that washing probably takes a ton more time! Anyways, they look fantastic. The stain may be expensive, but it sure does the trick.

Dipping was a big fad here a long while ago (judging how I saw as many as 6 new "dipped _______" threads at any given day) though I never really understood how it worked.

The way diping works is actually pretty simple. What you are doing is using a different medium with which to suspend a pigment. Unlike paints the mediums used in dipping have a very low surface ension. Ever put a drop of water on a linoleum floor? Notice the way it creates a drop/bubble? That's because of surface tension. The same thing will happen with paint on a mini unless you disturb it with a brush. Mediums with a lower surface tension do not need much to disturb them. Gravity and the form of a mini are usually enough. That is why the medium seems to "sink into" the edges/crack sof a mini. You can use several different mediums... This thread shows the effect of a wood finisher. You can also use clear floor waxes with pigment added. Check out doctor fausts painting clinic for a recipe. It is a great way to "cheat" and get a dark lining effect without all the effort. Gives a great "dirty" effect as well. ender502

Copplestone Castings figures, it looks like (the middle one at least).
I keep wanting to try dipping, and probably will with my Empire army for 7th ed.

Hey,
An awesome idea, and a real time-saver.
This should go in the FAQ.

What's up with this forum and formatting?
The key is that you have to be very careful about getting all your tags correct when you write a post. So check and double-check until you're sure about the formatting. Then click "Submit." And then the text editor will do whatever it feels like doing. And trying to edit your old posts often makes them worse. Enjoy! Back on topic, the magnet holder tool is an excellent idea for mass dipping.

That's probably the most impressive and inspiring dipping I've seen! I had no idea the dip could work so well for human models - your citizens turned out fantastically grimmy and "real" looking, and I'm guessing you didn't go in and do any touch-up work after dipping? Great stuff Kendoka, and you're making me rethink giving the dip a try ... - Boss Salvage

On the pics above - no. When I find the time I'll probably do it though (adding eyes, lenses on scopes and other small details).
I am dipping three 10-man squads of Kasrkin at the moment. Works well - but not as good as minis with a lot of metal and exposed skin.

Update. I tried dipping 3 squads of Kasrkin - and realised that exposed skin, metal and brown items/fabrics are the ones best suited for dipping (using my dark brown wood stain).

those kasirkin are the direct result of dipping????? If so, I'm wasting my dang time trying to shade and highlight. I should be driving to the nearest home depot for stain.
