Personally I would mix the colors you used in the base coat and the highlights so the contrast isn't quite as severe. Also, not wanting to sound like a golden demon painter here, but add a lot more water in the final highlight. I find using a heavily diluted glaze for the bright colors will eliminate brush stroke visibility and make the blend far more subtle.
