The Chapter of the Black Hand

Why I Started This Army

I started this army as I didn't really like the fluff of regular Space Marines, but liked their look and how they worked. Plus I am an evil guy, so Chaos called to me!

This army is a "nurgle themed" army - dirty, diseased and generally grimy.

Army Background

The Chapter of the Black Hand is a splinter group from the times of the Horus Heresy. Originally a task force comprised of members of the Death Guard dispatched to cut off the Empire's means of resupply as the Forces of Chaos pulled back to the Eye of Terror, they were trapped by a warp storm on the Forge World that they were laying siege to.

Over the next 10,000 years they waged war against the surviving defenders until the warp storm abated and they were able to leave the planet (after deploying a number of virus weapons before they left).

History

During their retreat from Terra during the Great Heresy, a company of Deathguard Marines and their Captain and Lieutenants were dispatched to capture a remote forge world on the very fringes of the Imperium. Their goal wasto slow the flow of war machines into the Imperium, allowing those who rebelled against the Emperor respite in their retreat.

Upon entering the system, the Marines immediately moved upon the main manufactura, landing troops via drop pod right at the gates of the mighty fortress factory.

The defenders were taken completely by surprise and after only a few weeks of heavy fighting the capital was in the hands of the traitorous marines.

The fighting did not halt the corruption of the marines. Although spared the gross changes visited upon the majority of their brothers, separated as they were by many sectors from the main lines of retreat, the powers of Chaos still took their toll. Captain Hargoth and his 4 Lieutenants entered daemon hood together, on the night a huge warp storm enveloped the system, cutting it off from the rest of the Imperium for over 10,000 years.

With only a small number of Marines and without the prospect of ready reinforcements, the surviving Deathguard retreated inside their captured fortress, turning over the holy workshops of the Machine God to the production of weapons, armour and war machines with which to crush the other factory cities.

For thousands of years deadlier and deadlier machines marched across the toxic wastes between the brief oasis of life. More and more Marines succumbed to enemy action and where possible they were entombed within the huge war machines the manufactoria continued to produce, although at a much reduced rate as the flow of raw materials and food for the workers from the surrounding systems ended with the arrival of the warp storm.

The ranks of dreadnought bound Brothers swelled over the millennia, taking eternal revenge upon the decedents of those who dared to take their mortal bodies.

Every now and then the warp storm would lull, or its eddies would contrive to spit out a ship or two. These were eagerly drafted into the war between the Marines and the embattled defenders of the Imperium still left upon the damned world. Fellow Traitor Marines were drafted into the Deathguard ranks and as time went on the company changed, becoming the Chapter of the Black Hand, named after the darkness that gripped their hearts and the quintet of daemons at their head.

It was not until the 41st millennium that the skies cleared of the unnatural warp light and the stars began to shine on that blighted planet again.

Looking out upon the galaxy, what had been Captain Hargoth and his Lieutenants so long ago now saw a vast expanse of worlds ready for the plucking. Gathering their forces, the Black Hand withdrew overnight, finally unleashing the deadly virus bombs they had had aboard their cruiser, gaining the ultimate vengeance against the world that had kept them captive for 10,000 years.

Their ships slipped into the warp, holds full of powerful war machines, ready to wage war upon the galaxy.

Chapter Colours

The Chapter of the Black Hand retain the colours of the pre-Heresy Death Guard; a mottled white armour with green trim. However, the Black Hand maries have spent 10,000 years within their armour and what was once pure and clean has become corrupt and corroded and now the white is dirty and pitted with vile substances leaking from the putrifying living corpses contained within them.

The Chosen and Favoured squads are denoted with a darker green trim on their armour and an orange band encircling the thigh of the left leg.

Their Terminators carry reverse colours; being trimmed in white, with armour in the same dark green as that which trims the armour of the Chosen Marines.

The Chapter Symbol is an that of the print left by an open palm and fingers, rendered in black.

The Chapter carries red banners.
