More About Dakka

DakkaDakka - Warhammer, 40k, Warmachine and Flames of War Community.

DakkaDakka is a large, independent wargaming community that features discussion, tutorials and images for many games.

Warhammer 40,000

Our warhammer 40k forums are among our most popular. They have been operating the longest and contain discussion about every facet of warhammer 40k from tactics and army lists to background and upcoming releases.

Warhammer Fantasy

The Warhammer Fantasy Battle Forums are consistently increasing in popularity and are almost on a par with our 40k forums covering the same large range of content with advice from some of the best tacticians the world has to offer.

Warmachine and Hordes

Dakka now has one of the largest Warmachine and Hordes forums on the web, and has a huge range of Warmachine Pictures in our gallery.

Flames of War

Flames of War and other historical games are growing in popularity here on dakka and we invite anyone to join in and discuss them in detail. As flames of war grows more popular, Dakka's coverage will only increase. Be sure to check out the Flames of War gallery to see some inspiring stuff.

Dakka Features

Dakka is a big site with a lot to explore. Here we highlight some of our more interesting features:

Wargaming Gallery

The dakka gallery is one of the largest wargaming galleries in the world and has a huge range of tagged miniatures from many game systems. From flames of war to Maelstrom's Edge, and of course 40k. You can vote on images (like using hot-or-not), and use our advanced gallery search engine to find exactly what you are looking for, be it space marines, orks, cryx or Dark Elves!

Forums

The dakka forums are growing faster and faster and are the bread and butter of the website. They still maintain quality and a fair level of freedom compared to many other forums. Our most popular forum is News and Rumours, but Dakka Discussions and 40k army lists are very popular too. There are some important rules to consider (no spam, no swearing, no piracy) but everybody gets on well enough thanks to our great moderation team.

Articles

The dakka wargaming articles are run on a wiki (like wikipedia). We have a huge range of wargaming articles covering everything from tactica to modeling and painting and even some great funny stuff. If you are bored and want to have the equivalent of dozens of magazines to read then head over to the main articles page and start clicking around. Because it is a wiki, anybody can hop in and click the 'edit' tab at the top of the page, so if you have anything to add or just see some typos or bad grammar then you can help make it better for everyone.

Army Profiles

Dakka's army profiles are a throwback to the very earliest version of dakka from the late 1990s, where various armies were highlighted in detail. Our army profiles section now contains many armies from different game systems with in depth photographs, army lists and explanations of their signifigance from their owners.

Sponsor Press Release:
Introducing 3D Print Manager

Posted: 2026-04-26 18:00:00

Hi there!

I'm a resin printer hobbyist with a file hoarding problem and absolutely zero regrets about it. I’ve built a new free tool for other people like me that might have a similar problem.

It’s called 3D Print Manager.

It lets you download files from any website straight into your library, organize with smart folders, preview models interactively, and manage your build plates from start to finish.

Use code SENDHELP for 50% off the pro tier if you want to support a fellow hobbyist.

Thanks for taking a look — I genuinely hope it helps!

Dakka Forum: Can you eat Orks?

I was thinking about the food shortages on Armageddon and came to the conclusion that if Orks are essentially a fungus, and Kroot routinely eat them, could the Ork be prepared in such a way for human consumption?

Dakka Forum: WH40k: I'm not really all that hyped about the coming of the eleventh edition.

Before everyone takes out their pitchforks. Hear me out.

I've been playing Warhammer 40k since around the 2022. I started collecting since 2019 and I have gotten into the game around the tail end of 9th edition. While I had my gripes about the 9th and 10th's rules I've eventually got accustomed to all the keywords and shortening of the rules. Fast forwards to the soon to be launch of this upcoming edition and I'm not really all that excited. I have Orks and Necrons, my Orks I've been playing for the most. I know we're getting a lot of neat models but I'm thinking that for now I'm going to just binge play if a friend in my LGS asks or perhaps around August once the 11th edition had two months to settle in.

Not sure if I'm getting old, if I just want to try Bloodbowl or Necromunda, that or I'm just wanting to really be patient until around Autumn. I just don't get the hype around the 11th atm. I would like for things to be fixed, but with the whole theme around Armageddon I'm sort of in a 'been there done that' mood. (I've been into the lore since around 2012, so Armageddon was important in 2014-2015.)

I don't know, perhaps I just need to take a break from 40k until around Halloween? It could be I just have moved onto Bloodbowl. I am still going to gradually collect and hobby paint. I prefer the casual hobby side of Warhammer over the big tournament stuff anyways.

Dakka Forum: What's your ideal number of 40k armies to own? How many do you have?

Posted: 2026-05-14 10:59:07
Forum post by -Guardsman-, 36 responses at time of this post.

I'm not making this a poll, because I care more about explanations and reasoning than actual numbers. Also, there's an important distinction between armies you own and armies you actually play and collect, so that's worth discussing too. For the sake of this thread, let's say that 1000 pts counts as an army, because that's enough for a small game or 2v2 and it does require some commitment of time and money.

Number of armies I own: 4. (all in the neighborhood of 3000 pts)
Number of armies I've played or grown in the past 12 months: 4. (soon to be 3 - haven't touched my Sororitas since last winter)
My ideal number of armies: 3.

We all have our reasons for owning armies from more than one faction, such as being able to try out new tactics or play styles, or keeping up with the meta in case one of our factions gets nerfed into uselessness. For my part, I'd say my #1 reason for starting new armies was simply a desire to paint other kinds of models and try out new color schemes or painting techniques, though I do appreciate the other advantages.

But at what point do you have too many? Armies are expensive to purchase and time-consuming to paint. They can end up taking a lot of space in a house or apartment. There's also the skill maintenance aspect... One can get rusty and have to refresh on the stats and rules before a game, especially when there's a new codex or errata.

I currently have 4 armies (listed in my signature), but honestly, 3 would be the optimal number for me. Still manageable in terms of storage and keeping up with the rules. Good range of play styles, assuming they're not too similar. But 4 is definitely pushing it and I should consider selling one of them... or at least, adopt a very strict "one in, one out" rule from now on.

.

When doing model fine details and symbols do you prefer to...
Use standard decals
Create your own custom decals
Use detail on the original model itself
Deliberately buy upgraded parts for models with Symbols and detail on, to save using decals.
Model your own GS fine detail
Paint on fine details free hand
Don't bother with detail, just a basic paint job

Dakka Forum: Terminators, why?

Posted: 2026-05-13 12:59:07
Forum post by ccs, 36 responses at time of this post.

What is it with people running full 10x + attached character squads, loyalist or heretic, of Terminators?

For the 5th game (all different opponents) in a row now I've faced these huge point sink units that generally just don't put out enough damage.
1 UM player used them well & held a key objective/area of the board.
The other 4 (DA, Iron Hand, & CSM x2)? All went offensive, DS them, often into sub-optimal areas thanks to being screened (its not easy to place 11 40mm bases) or just poor target selection, largely failed to cause enough damage wether shooting or melee, & then I simply ran away from them.

I don't see the draw of investing that many pts into such huge & generally lackluster units.

Now if any of my opponents were doing so because either A) Theme!, B) "Termies are my favorite units/models"?
Then I'd get it. I'm all for playing models for those reasons. I do it all the time.
But I know that's not the case....
So why?

Anyone else noticing people doing this?
