Coming into round four, I've got two very narrow wins and a decent win in my third game against Yermom. Apparently, my win was enough to kick me out of the 2nd lowest ranked winner spot back to the third lowest ranked winner spot and I head back to table #3 to take on....JAWABALLS!!!

I know his name but don't read his blog and haven't met him before. He shakes my hand with a winning smile, shares a drink with me and we have a good laugh about life in general; I find myself liking him immediately. There's nothing worse than being at a drama-filled top table in a tournament, and I'm feeling that this is going to be a relaxed game, for which I'm grateful....I've had three great games, great opponents, and no issues anywhere.

Here's a picture of his Blood Angels. Jawaballs jokes that he doesn't belong on the top tables, and after my last game against poor Yermom's daemons, I'm inclined to believe I haven't earned my spot either.

Jawaballs' Blood Angels:

HQ2: Reclusiarch with Liturgies of Blood, Rosarius, Crozius Arcanum, Infernus Pistol

Elite3: Sanguinary Priest in Terminator Armor + Power Sword

Heavy1: Autocannon Predator with Lascannon Sponsons
Heavy2: Autocannon Predator with Lascannon Sponsons
Heavy3: Autocannon Predator with Lascannon Sponsons

Nova Mission #4 is a randomized dice roll for the GT: I think they rolled mission two, which is Pitched Battle, with the win conditions taking the following precedence:
1. Objectives
2. Victory Points
3. Victory Points

Pre-Game Tactical Assessment:
Blood Angels....I don't have a terrific amount of experience against them, but I know that their vehicles can move 18", and they're fast for shooting. In my pre-game questions, I'm looking for blood lances, meltas, lascannons, multi-meltas....the things that nullify my mobility. He's got Lascannons scattered all across his razorbacks, along with lascannons on his predators and a multi-melta on his land raider - all of those are noteworthy threats, and if I can keep him in my front armor, I should be alright. Especially if I can go first.

We roll off (Jawa throws his dice down first) and he rolls a 5. I dejectedly roll my own dice. Ha!

I win the roll to go first and deploy. That one dice of his is going to become legendary though. =p

This is probably a familiar looking deployment by now. Deffkoptas flanking, everything else in KFF range, with Lootas left and right to range the field.

Terrain actually got moved between round 3 and 4, so its not where Vinny and I left it in game2 - terrain is forward, leaving unoptimal fields of fire. Jawa only has a single blast threat (a razorback with a twin-linked heavy flamer) so I don't worry about my spacing.

Jawa deploys in return. His twin-linked heavy flamer razorback is in reserve, with the bulk of his forces in my top right. His dreadnought deploys opposite my own forces in his center field.

Here's his center-field dreadnought and his left side predator; he's looking for opportunities to hit side armor, and potential bait I suppose.

My left Deffkopta scouts up the left towards his lone predator. My right Deffkopta scouts up towards his right predators - if they can both do their jobs, we'll take down 2 out of his 3 autocannons and 4 out of 9 lascannons on on turn one, leaving little in the way of a credible anti-tank threat.

Jawaballs rolls to seize after an elaborate ceremony with his die and........F***.

Blood Angel Turn One:
His first Las/Plas razorback attempts to move forward to get better shooting angles and his epic die continues to be epic. That Razorback isn't going anywhere.

After a celebratory drink for winning the roll to go first, and a commiserating drink after having the initiative stolen from me, and another celebratory drink when his razorback immobilized itself, followed by a conciliatory drink so that Jawaballs didn't think I was toasting his demise, the Captain is running low.

His first predator opens up on my incoming Deffkopta, causing three wounds from Plasma / Lascannons. Awwww. :( I failed two of three cover saves.

His other predator and lascannon razorbacks open up on the KFF wagon getting a total of two penetrates. My Big Mek opens up the top hatch and screams out, "DENIED!!"

On the left side, his predator delivers lascannons and auto-cannons into my Deffkopta, who fails a save on an autocannon wound and takes one.

Ork Turn One:
My Orks move up 12".

I make a significant mistake here. Somehow....I FORGOT that there was a land raider on the table. A land raider with terminators inside. Who get to reroll hits. A land raider that has an assault ramp. My rokkit buggies partly exist in this list to screen things like that away from my Battlewagons, but instead of moving the rokkit buggies up 18" to screen my battlewagons, I completely separated them from the battlewagons and ran around the side to take shots at the Furioso dread. Not joking, I was shocked when he moved up his land raider on turn2 and dropped terminators on me. I was like, "WHERE THE HELL DID THEY COME FROM?!?" I blame the Captain. And Jawaballs for being Jolly. Also Brad (Hulksmash) for being two rows away and talking so loudly that I could have set up a tape recorder on my table and listened to his game later.

At any rate, my Battlewagons are presenting front armor to his line, I'm trying to screen myself from his left side predator, and leave room between my battlewagons (1" or so) for my orks to disembark if I lose one.

Lootas on the left target his Furioso (who gets cover saves) and get three shots apiece!

That'll be enough to castrate the Furioso; I take away the claw with the multi-melta attached; one less anti-tank weapon and no more rerolls against me in close combat. I manage to shake it at the same time, so no worries about the flamer either.

My Lootas on the right are in front armor of his predators, so they go after his immobilized razorback instead. I get a weapon destroyed and shaken result.

My rokkit buggies on the left fire at the Furioso as well. I'm not sure who got the results on it, but between the Lootas and the buggies, he lost an arm and got shaken. In the back corner, my Deffkopta advances menacingly on the lone Predator and fires into its side armor, resulting in....nothing!

20 minutes after game start, and we're officially empty. Awwwwww. :(

My deffkopta assaults into his predator and inflicts a weapon destroyed and shaken result. I take away a lascannon.

Blood Angels Turn Two:

WHERE IN THE HELL DID THOSE TERMINATORS COME FROM?!? Seriously, I mentally blocked out the fact that there was a land raider on the table.

Vantage shot of his terminators popping out of the warp. I swear that Land raider wasn't there. SHUT UP! I won't hear any other version. They're ELDAR XENOS terminators.

No picture of this part, but his shaken predator tank-shocks into my deffkopta, who passes leadership and gets out of his way.

A picture is worth 1,000 words, right? Here's the summation of Jawaballs' shooting phase.

His terminators assault into my battlewagons. He multi-assaults across all three of them, and I giggle. Then he tells me about his litanies, STR10 close combat librarian powers, rerolls....and I blanch. 6s to hit, and his rerolls DELIVER! Two battlewagons explode, and he causes a weapon destroyed result (but nothing else) on my third battlewagon).

In the background you can see his other movements; his closest razorback smoked, and his predators on the right side sidled down the edge.

Ork Turn Two:

My Rokkit buggies line up for side armor shots on his Predator, while my Deffkopta swings around for rear shots.

My burna wagon tank shocks through his non-thunderhammer terminators, having declared a ram. The terminators go unscathed, while the land raider gets wrecked from the Deffrolla. My trukk doesn't have anywhere to go because of the boyz and nobs in the way, so it creeps around behind the BLOS middle terrain to wait for something exciting to do.

Ghazghkull's wagon moved a grand total of 5", and can't get out to get into the terminators because of the tight groupings, so he jumps out 2" towards the predators. My hand has been forced, so I'm going to have to Waaaugh! and get what I can.

Much shooting later, a couple terminators fall over. My gretchin even get some shots in and cut through a 2+/4++ FNP. Lol.

Ghazghkull declares his Waaaugh! On the left side, the Rokkit buggies and Deffkopta open up on the Predator, scoring two more weapon destroyed results and a shaken. It has no weapons, but its a mobile tank shocker!

The Lootas on the left take a smoke break since they can't see anything, and the Lootas on the right open up on side armor on the nearest predator, wrecking it. Ghazghkull runs 6" towards the other one. The KFF from the exploded KFF Wagon also jumped into Ghazghkull's wagon this turn.

Asssaults!

My deffkopta in the top left assaults into the predator and whiffs.

There's a big scrum in the middle. My nobs multi-assault his dreadnought and terminators. My boyz all assault into his terminators.

His terminators eat half of my boyz, and his dreadnought whiffs against my Nobs, who pass an invul save to be untouched. In return, a powerklaw wrecks the Furioso.

My boyz and a couple nobs lay into his terminators and put down both independent characters, the lightning claws, and the priest, leaving the Thunderhammer, who whiffs against the Nobs. His thunderhammer terminator loses combat by ONE. He's fearless (blood rage thing), and fails his single fearless save.

Ghazghkull Thraka pulls his own "Pop out of the warp" trick and explodes the remaining predator.

Not a bad Waaaugh! turn!

Blood Angels Turn Three:

Jawaballs is in trouble now, so focuses on objectives. His reserved razorback didn't come out turn2, and still doesn't come out. The razorback that smoked last turn cranks 18" down the field, tank shocks through my Lootas (who are fearless and ignore it) and onto the back side of my objective. His assault squad jumps out and hunkers down.

His weaponless predator tank shocks backwards through my deffkopta again, which I dodge and ignore because I'm fearless. In the top right, Jawa concentrates his remaining firepower on....I'm not sure what, but I didn't take any pictures of stuff dying, so it probably didn't do anything.

Orks Turn Three:
My remaining boyz move (and later run) back towards my gretchin held objective. My gretchin 2d6 away from the assault marines trying to get away from the assault squad. They're not going to make it.

My right side Lootas turn around and wreck the razorback.

My left side Lootas finally have a target and open up on his assault squad, doing nothing. My gretchin turn around and unload on the assault squad and....also do nothing.

My nobs move forward towards his table quarter while my trukk full of boyz jets 12" towards the top left table quarter. My deffkopta and rokkit buggies swing around towards his table quarter and Ghazghkull moves into threat range of more of his stuff.

Blood Angel Turn Four:

The assault squad on his objective hunkers down in preparation for Ghazghkull. His reserved heavy flamer razorback continues to avoid joining the fight. In my rear, his assault squad stomps through my Gretchin gleefully and wipe them out.

Ork Turn Four:

We're running out of time, and this will end up being the last turn.

My trukk boyz jump onto the top left objective.

My Rokkit buggies and deffkopta line up for shots on his immobilized razorback and explode it - letting Ghazghkull assault the contents instead of having to assault the razorback.

In my backfield my boyz assault his assault squad after both Loota units unload on them and clean them up.

With that, the game ends. I own the bottom left and top right objectives. Ghazghkull contests the top right objective (otherwise empty) with my Lootas on the bottom left. I own two objectives, all four table quarters, and win on victory points too.

Post-Game Analysis:
I think that Jawa's list was decent, but I think his deployment was a mistake. He offered up a predator as a sacrifice in the top left corner and I took advantage of it. I'm not sure why he reserved his other razorback with the twin-linked flamer and melta, but it denied him a unit capable of doing bad things to me with either melta or heavy flamer. I was also surprised to see him present Predator side armor to my Lootas in the second half of the game, which I took advantage of. Jawaballs had some horrid shooting, and I made some great KFF saves. I *did* have to pay heavily for missing the Land Raider, but I took an early heavy toll on his lascannons, and his ability to threaten me at range or insta-gib my nobs.

With that, the tournament ends with me being 4-0, and winning "Tournament Ace" which is the equivalent of Best General. I got a trophy, a razorback, and some other loot, and access to day two's invitational.

Mike called us into the judge room afterwards - the way pairings worked out meant that the top seeded winners were going to get a bye.....while I ended up ranked as the "Worst winner" with the lowest win ranking based on my performance in my first four games. As such, I'm required to show up Sunday morning and fight for the right to compete in the winner's brackets.

Cool! DOP, You make some awesome BRs.

Anyway, Two things:

Where did you get those Vehicle damage counters, they're awesome.

And

Can you give us a Tutorial for writing BR, Not necessarily me, but more are pitiful. [as in, "I played marines. They shooted me sometimes, then assaulted me. I wonz."]

After reading the game I am very certain that Jawaballs made a mistake assaulting in with his terminators. The best case scenario he had there was to blow up all 3 battlewagons, and then get hit next turn by your disembarked troops. He would have been much better suited to try and out maneuver you while shooting for another turn or two. As powerful as those terminators are (even with FNP), they are going to fold to that many orks assaulting them.

He really needed to destroy the battlewagons with shooting before trying the assault.

You've played well this tournament and it comes down to the first major mistake or poor dice luck.

One quick question: My understanding of your list is that you have 5 lootas in a unit, but you mention them being fearless (BA turn 3). How is that so?

edit: P.S: Great batreps, always a good read!

Well I guess you can call it a mistake but it was definitely the right move initially to try and capitalize on the mistake Dash made by moving his Battlewagons up a bit far. If he had managed to pop even one of those Battlewagons with shooting then he would have been able to get a multi assault into an infantry unit (remembering that this is a Furious Charge LC unit as well) leaving him far less exposed to being countered next turn. The problem is that having disembarked and committed theres not much you can do besides try and make the best out of a bad situation, if he had had a bit more luck and immobilised that third wagon in assault then things still would have looked ok I think (as his firebase would have been much safer).

Having said that I do feel that it is a potential flaw in his list, everything else is in Razorbacks (providing fire support) leaving the Land Raider charging off by itself without support in close (notably of the melta variety). The TL HF Razorback and squad is probably the closest to providing this, choosing to reserve it rather than just hiding it behind the Raider was a bit strange.

In any case well played Dash, great stuff going 4-0, looking forward to the playoff reports.

When I declare a Waaaugh! my entire army becomes fearless for one game turn. Its one of the benefits of having Ghazghkull in my army....he *is* a nasty close combat beast, but he is also an incredible force multiplier. I normally don't take bosspoles on my nobs because I work hard to time my games so that when I might be required to take leadership checks I'm fearless....this was my 2500 list pared down, and I stopped paring when I got to 2,000 - it looks a little different than it would if I built a 2k Ork list from scratch. Not much, but a little.

While you did present a nice juicy target, it was still a mistake to assault the Wagons with the terminators. Because now his 500+ point unit is sitting there waiting to get hit by the bulk of the Ork army. Always better to wait and shoot as many out of their transports as you can and then assault.

Paper is totally over powered! I can't believe how badly you guys screwed up. Why can't you make armies balanced, like Scissors? I quit!

Yeah...biggest strategic mistake of the BA player was to let the Orks get the charge.

Otherwise a good match.

I really like that this happened.

I've taken a lot of my Ork tactics from DOP and a lot of my Blood Angels tactics from Jawaballs.

Although i'll agree DOP is the better general any day.

Things like this cause bad feelings. :(

I think Jawa is a fine general - I run unorthodox Orks and he wasn't prepared for my particular version of them.

Kind of like me not knowing all the other codexes explicitly and having to ask questions - doesn't make me a bad general. In his shoes, I would *also* have assaulted the battlewagons with the terminators. His multi-meltas have a 24" range, 12" double-tap, and on the Waaaugh! I've got a 29" threat range. Short of deploying in the middle and running to a corner, shooting on the run and trying to play keep-away, taking away my mobility is a good choice. Is losing a squad of terminators worth taking away three battlewagons and all my mobility? I think that's a good trade; although he probably should have dropped a second model onto my Ghazghkull wagon. He had multiple explode results on both others, and only a single result on Ghazghkull's wagon.

I think the game would have been different if I had no battlewagons left. Then I *would* be trying to slog across the field through terminators and a land raider to get to his stuff.

wow, you forced a BLOOD ANGELS player into a corner. Nice job.

Without the ability to move around, the primary advantages of the BA codex is lost, turning him into just regular space marines, except more expensive.

Nice job on the win.

Nice batrep, I think Jawaballs just wasn't aggressive enough and the assault the BW with the termies was a mistake.

On a sidenote, Jawaballs has the worst dice rolls in history if his batreps and his friend Fritz's batreps is anything to go by.
