“Canoness, reports from headquarter just came in,” informs Sister Tessa. “Ariel recon has spotted enemy forces near the Twin Bridges.”

Dianus pulls up pictures on her dataslate. From above the land looks fertile with pockets of vegetation scattered over the valley. A greenish-blue river threads its way across with two bridges spanning either side. A close up reveals Marines in gray armor bunkering one side.

“Have a cruiser deliver orbital bombardment,” orders Dianus.

A minute later, Tessa looks up from her vox station. “Negative, enemy ships in orbit. The Inquisitor wants that bridge intact.”

Dianus frowns. “And what’s stopping enemy ships from bombarding us?” She asks.

Tessa grins. “The Emperor protects,” she replies.

A while back, I competed in an 1850 points tournament held at Black Diamond Games in Concord, California. The store had a good turn out with 14 players attending. The majority consisted of Grey Knights, Space Wolves, and Space Marines, but there were non-MEQ as well ranging from Dark Eldar, Tyranids, Tau, Imperial Guard, Orks, and Sisters of Battle (me).

There were 3 rounds, each 2 hours long. Extra Victory Points was awarded to players who either kills all opposing enemy HQ’s, troops, or tables opposing army.

Army List

My opponent brought a mechanized Space Wolves army focused on Rune Priests and Grey Hunters. I don’t play against many armies with Drop Pods, so this was a real treat.

Space Wolves:
-Rune Priest A, Wolftooth Necklace, Murderous Hurricane, Storm Caller
-Rune Priest B, Wolftooth Necklace, Jaws of the World Wolf, Storm Caller
-Rune Priest C, Wolftooth Necklace, Jaws of the World Wolf, Living Lightning
-Venerable Dreadnought, Assault Cannon, Heavy Flamer, Drop Pod
-9 Grey Hunters, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Meltagun, Rhino (Rune Priest A
-9 Grey Hunters, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Meltagun, Rhino (Rune Priest B)
-10 Grey Hunters, Power Fist, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Meltagun, Drop Pod (Rune Priest C)
-10 Grey Hunters, Power Fist, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, 2 Meltaguns, Drop Pod
-6 Long Fangs, 3 Missile Launchers, 2 Plasma Cannons, Razorback w/ TL-Lascannon
-Predator, TL-Lascannon Turret, Sponson Lascannons

I brought a take all comers list with emphasis on Celestians.

Sisters of Battle (Order of Faith):
-Canoness, Book of St. Lucius, Brazier of Holy Fire, Heavy Flamer
-5 Celestians, 2 Meltaguns, Immolator, Extra Armour, Smoke
-5 Celestians, 2 Meltaguns, Immolator, Extra Armour, Smoke
-5 Celestians, 2 Meltaguns, Immolator, Extra Armour, Smoke
-8 Seraphims, Veteran Sister Superior, Book of St. Lucius, Eviscerator, 2 Flamers
-10 Battle Sisters, Veteran Sister Superior, Book of St. Lucius, Brazier of Holy Fire, Meltagun, Heavy Flamer, Rhino, Extra Armour, Smoke, Search Light
-10 Battle Sisters, Veteran Sister Superior, Book of St. Lucius, Brazier of Holy Fire, Meltagun, Heavy Flamer, Rhino, Extra Armour, Smoke, Search Light

Spoiler:
Victory for Sisters of Battle!

Afterthoughts

Spoiler:
My Sisters suffered heavy losses after Space Wolves first turn shooting. It was like déjà vu from the last 1500 points tournament, first match against Grey Knights. Two Immolators went poof and a Rhino wrecked with a full squad of Battle Sisters pinned underneath. On top of that, most of my Seraphims were killed including the Veteran Sister Superior. I was certain this game would end in my defeat.

Fortunately, a few factors allowed me to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. My opponent made a few judgemental errors. He should have landed his first two Drop Pods on my objectives. Even if I wipe out the Rune Priest and Grey Hunters, the Drop Pods could still contest. The second mistake my opponent made was not pushing hard enough. He should have been more aggressive with his Rune Priest and Grey Hunters transported in Rhinos. The third mistake was my opponent’s slow game play. He spent too much time planning out this movement and shooting. He needs to learn to speed things up. This is one of the reasons why our game ended after only turn 3. The fourth factor was luck. At the top of turn 3, the Space Wolves last drop pod scattered wildly off an objective. By then, the tournament organizer announced last turn. This left my forces free to the secure objectives without a fight. It’s like I was handed a free win. Both my opponent and I requested the organizer to allow another turn, but the judge was adamant in his decision. Had the game continued, it probably would have ended in a draw with both objectives contested and both sides holding their own objective.

Ironically, the tournament judge was also playing in the tournament in a heated Ork vs. Ork match with plenty of vehicles and Boyz on both sides. He and his opponent’s last turn took a total of forty-five minutes to complete. With those forty-five, my opponent and I could have easily squeezed in an extra two turns.

.....

Canoness Dianus rolls to the side just in time as a metal stump smashes next to her. Tremendous force shatters the ground, sending dirt and dust flying everywhere. “Unbelievable!” growls Dianus, “why won’t you just lie down and die?” The crippled Venerable Dreadnought towers over Dianus. Its large cylinder sockets sticks out left and right from the machine’s casing. A while back, there used to be arms, but now they were reduced to molten slag after being blasted off point blank by Meltaguns. Despite being disarmed, ancient walker was still deadly.

Inner servos whine as its pneumatic motor compresses air into cylinders housed in the walker’s legs. Its metallic kicks off the ground towards the Canoness. Dianus dodges to the side, feeling the gush of air from the large swinging metal ligament. She spins around, sweeping her Eviscerator towards the walker’s legs. Metal teeth slams into the Dreadnought’s knee joint and whirls to life. Metal grinds into metal, turning the Dreadnought's ceramite red hot form friction. Dianus strains her muscles, pushing her enormous chain sword deeper. With a final push, her Eviscerator cleaves through, toppling the giant metal walker.

The Venerable Dreadnought flops on its back like a fish on dry land. “I live to kill! For the Russ and the all father!” booms the walker in a deep metallic voice.

Dianus carefully climbs on top and raises her Eviscerator above the abdomen housing the armoured sarcophagus. “As a warrior, I applaud your efforts, but I find your lack in faith disturbing.”

Dianus slams her Eviscerator down, grinding through the ornately decorated hull. Sparks fly and Dreadnought desperately fumbles on the ground. At last the Eviscerator's metal teeth cuts into flesh. A fountain of blood and ooz sprays out, soaking Dianus. The Venerable Dreadnought ceases moving.

.....

Canoness Dianus and Celestian Sister Tessa stand on top of a hill overlooking the valley. Across the river, the Grey Hunters were in full retreat.

“Watch those heretics run with their tail between their legs,” snickers Tessa, pointing across river.

“Aye," said Dianus, nodding in agreement. "It's today is a glorious day for the Imperium.”

Tessa pulls her helmet off and sniffs the air. She coughs and chokes. Her face turns pale and she immediately clenches her nose. “Yuck! What’s that awful stench?” She asks.

Dianus blushes. “Forgive me Sister. I fought a Venerable Dreadnought, which was at least five centuries old. I ended up penetrating its sarcophagus, but its rotten guts sprayed all over me.”

Sister Tessa’s gaze travels down toward the river and then back to Dianus, and she grins.

.....

After assessing damages, casualties, and submitting her report, Dianus took a brief opportunity to wash up. She peels away her synthsuit and tosses it aside on top of her blood stained power armour. She slowly lowers her naked body into the river. At first her muscles tense from the water’s icy cold touch. After fully submerging her herself, her muscles finally unwinds from the cool sensation. She paddles deeper, feeling the cold stream wash away her sweat and the putrid stench of the decaying venerable marine.

Upstream she spots what looks to be a limp body floating face down. For a minute, Dianus contemplates whether she should swim out and pull the body back to shore or call for back up. In the end, curiosity gets the best of her.

Minutes later, Dianus grunts as she drags the body out of the water. After catching her breath, she kneels down for a closer inspection. The body was bloated, having spent days in water. The victim was male, wearing black and red fatigues. His right arm patch bears a cross “I”, revealing his occupation as an Inquisitorial Storm Trooper. Dianus frowns. She knew Inquisitor Coteaz kept a lot of secrets, but she wished he would inform her whenever he conducted black ops.

Dianus turns the body over. A sharp object was lodge deep in the victim’s back. She jerks it out and studies it under Atlas' sun. It didn't look like any Space Wolves combat or runic blade she's come across. It was elongated with one-sided curve edge. It was also non-metallic, but made out of a bone-like substance. Suddenly, realization struck her. This wasn’t a Space Wolves' blade. This was a Tyranid scything talon!

Congrats on the win. For a moment there, I thought we both played the same opponent. I also fought against Rune Priest wolves with 1 squad of long fangs. However, after reviewing my notes, my opponent had 2 rune priests, 1 wolf priest, 1 thunderwolf lord, 3 grey hunters in rhinos, 1 skyclaw, 2 vindicators and 1 land speeder.

It sucks that the TO called time and then went on to play another 45min-1hr to finish his game while we were all waiting. You could've finished your game also if you guys were allowed to play on.

Yeah I was the Dark Eldar at that tourney. That was pretty bad that the TO had to finish his game. I want to head out there and make it a more regular tourney for me but I am cautious as to the way it was run.

TO playing in his own tournament? Interesting...no conflict of interest there...

I believe he was also the ringer in the case there was an odd number of players.

Yeah. Longest lunch break ever! Everyone ended sitting down and waiting for his game to finish. 45mins later he told us to start round 2 even though he was still wrapping up his own game. That left 4 players without someone to play against (pending on the outcome of the game between TO and his opponent). This screwed up the 2 hour timer for round 2.

Still, I wish my opponent played faster. He spent a lot of time moving and shooting. I know other players at least got to turn 4 or 5.

Good to hear from you. You had a nicely painted army and a lot of skimmers.

I recall you were handing out fliers of a tournament you were hosting sometime in July or August. The TO for this tournament is a good example of dos and don'ts.

Unfortunately, this was his first time running a tournament. Regardless, there's no excuses when it effects the entire tournament.

Thanks. If this was a regular game, I wouldn't even bother posting this battle report.

Glad you are enjoying the story.

Only experienced TO should attempt being judge and competing in a tournament at the same time. Players would periodically come up and ask him questions on rules, which distracts him from his own game. I'm glad there were some experience players who volunteered to answer some of the rules. Kudos to them!

Off topic, sorry that we haven't played games in the past couple of weeks. Summer school takes up a lot of time. Once Sisters of Battle get a new codex, I'll want to play test them against your armies, just like you've done when GK came out.

@SabrX Yeah that was me! I didn't have flyers though. I was just telling people about a monthly tourney at my LFGS they host each month. Has anyone gone back for the 40k tourney since this TO incident? Is it still ran by the same TO? I'm trying to get as many games under my belt before the bay open.

Sorry, I don't frequent Black Diamond Games. It's a long drive from San Jose. He certainly got an earful from all the players.
