Subject: Melissia's Codex: Sisters of Battle, designed for Fifth Edition
It's been a long time coming because I cannot figure out this forum's system for tables (or at the very least an easy way to do them). So I'm not gonna use tables, which will make the unit entries longer-- for which I will be using the forum's spoiler code to shorten. This is designed to be read in the classic Grey/Gold scheme. I have not looked to see what it looks like in any other Dakka theme. For those of you using non-standard themes, this is your warning. It's hard to format in this forum to begin with, nevermind for multiple themes.
So here goes:
5th Edition Codex: Adepta Sororitas
CHAPTER 1: Introduction
INDEX Chapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: Special Rules Chapter 3: Special Wargear Chapter 4: HQ Choices Chapter 5: Elite Choices Chapter 6: Troops Choices Chapter 7: Fast Attack Choices Chapter 8: Heavy Support Choices and Transports Chapter 9: Units and Rules Incomplete
This rant is somewhat outdated. Please don't pay it mind, I'm just saving it because it WAS an original part of the project way back when I started it, over a year ago on the Bolter and Chainsword. And it does give a good idea on my intent, even if it is outdated somewhat. Questions about my intent can be answered, but it's probably best to do so in pages because frankly I'm not gonna ask you to read through 11+ pages of IGMB conversation, 5+ pages of Dakka conversation (in the previous closed thread), 5+ pages of BoLS conversation, and 10+ pages of BnC conversation.
Spoiler:
Because I have found myself with too much time on my hands, I decided to try and give my attention somewhere else; somewhere that, though not necessarilly constructive, will at least keep my mind active and possibly produce some interesting results. Ergo, I'm working on adapting the army lists of second edition C:SoB and third edition C:WH into a fifth edition army, using C:SM and C:IG as bases while keeping the unique feel of the Sisters of Battle. This is mostly a mental excercize-- so keep that in mind when I say comments are welcome so long as they are aimed at being constructive and friendly instead of sarcastic, flaming, trolling, or otherwise obnoxious, in which case I will immediently PM a mod a report to the mods. So please, think before you post, as I will attempt to do, and save the mods the trouble yeah? Also, I don't really expect anyone to use this or anything to come out of it, as I said it is merely something I am doing for the sake of doing.
Where was I? Oh, right. C:Adepta Sorortias. I changed the name because of the unfortunate implications of "C:SoB", which for any intelligent adult fluent in English should be rather obvious and thus I should have no need to elaborate on this further. Mind you, I have to borrow a copy of C:SoB because I simply do not have the money to purchase something which I am unable to use in the current edition; combine this with the fact that second edition often functioned remarkably differently than fifth and hopefully you will understand that although I will be doing my best to include information and concepts from both codices, I will be focusing mostly on updating the more recent vision of them, with some extra input from the concepts in the second edition. If I HAVE missed something you think woudl be interesting to add in, please do so-- I appreciate constructive comments such as that, and may in fact give you an e-cookie of sorts. Variety and quantity determined by my mood and the tone of the contribution. Furthermore, some things I feel need to be changed simply for the sake of keeping things from becoming stupid if taken to extremes, which I should note with much dismay that GW has done quite recently with Commander Chenkov in fifth edition C:IG, but this is still something I'd like to avoid regardless
Also note that the fluff regarding the Sisters of battle is somewhat incomplete, I will be filling in the holes with what I envision should be there in the most ideal form (which is to say, ideal to me, not necessarilly you, the reader). With that in mind, because this would be effectively a fantasy new codex, those things which change the fluff-- which I will try and keep to a minimum!-- essentially represent retcons and other alterations, which yes, GW does every single edition to every single army in some small way or other. For those who are wondering where the Inquisition is in this thread; they aren't. This is because I do not like the concept of the Inquisition as an army; they should not have armies, but instead use their bodyguards (ISTs, retinue) combined with other peopels' armies (IE, Sisters, Grey Knights, Deathwatch, Guard, Astartes, and so on) depending on the situation and the resources at hand. Ergo, this codex is written based on the unwritten (with the exception of this sentence) assumption that a supplemental codex or minidex is produced that allows Inquisition players to do exactly this.
Furthermore, yes, I am intending to make them better than they are now in C:WH. Take no surprise to this, as this is what almost all fifth edition codices are going to do in comparison to the last edition. It is referred to as "codex creep". I will do my best to reign in this creep, but I will not keep it held in its stables entirelly, so to speak. A good number of units in C:WH are weak at best, and at least one is so useless that I am more likely than not going to drasticly redesign it. I doubt many Sisters players need to be told which one that is, but regardless, all units are going to be changed at least somewhat. Some units are going to be added in (from White Dwarf, from C:SoB, and from my own immagination, or a combination of all three!), but none aside from Inquisitorial units (inquisitors, assassins, stormtroopers) are actually going to be taken out from the C:WH version.
For many of these ideas, I give credit to the kind and forgiving folk in 7eal's Inquisition project, whom have given me a berth of ideas, many of which they probably didn't even realize they gave them to me). Other Sororitas players I've met have given me other ideas, forming in my (often hostile and aggressive) mind my own hopefully uniqaue vision of this wonderful faction which presents to me a shining light (bright enough to burn those that recklessly get too close to it) in the grim and dark universe of Warhammer 40,000.
For those of you that I have not bored away with my monotonous monologue, welcome to my idealized vision of Fifth Edition Codex: Adepta Sororitas. Aside from fluff sections for the individual entries which will generally give the idea for flavor of that particular unit, this thread is not intended to create an inordinate amount of fluff in that particular manner-- while I do occasionally style myself as a somewhat creative writer, I have neither the delusions nor desire that would cause me to wish to torment (most of) you with my literary "talents", or lack thereof. That said, because I need to create new units for a true fifth edition codex to work, new fluff is being created for this. The general idea is to base the lore for this fandex around the Marian Reforms in ancient Rome, turning the army into a more professional army-- but one still very faithful and fanatical.
There are a few things which I'm not likely budging on. One, I'm not dropping the Leman Russ Vengeance unless you provide me with a suitable MBT which isn't a predator clone. Two, I'm not dropping veteran sisters to initiative 3. Three, the codex is adding in new lore, new units, new ideas, so objections to new ideas just because they're new will be completely and utterly ignored, as they deserve to be.
Adepta Sororitas: All squads with the Adepta Sororitas special rule are Faithful, and are effected by the Shield of Faith. Furthermore, they have Favored Enemy: Psyker. ____________________
Book of Saints: All infantry squad leaders in this codex carry some form of the Book of Saints, albeit usually a smaller and condensed version. The teachings of this book, and indeed its very presence, reminds them of their duty to the Emperor. As such, these models use their unmodified leadership values for morale and pinning tests, and convey this effect to their squad. The sole exception to this are the Sisters Repentia, who have a different rule in place of this. If the squad leader is killed, the squad loses this effect. ____________________
Divine Charisma: All HQ units are also effected by the Book of Saints, with the following change: All friendly models within 6" may use the model's unmodified leadership checks for both morale and pinning tests. ____________________
Ecclesiarchal Servant: Units with the Ecclesiarchal Servant special rule are Faithful, and have the "In His Name!" special rule. ____________________
In His Name!: If an Ecclesiarchal Servant charges, then it re-rolls any to-wound rolls it makes during that round's assault phase. This rule confers over to any squad joined by a model with the Ecclesiarchal Servant special rule. ____________________
Faithful: All squads with the Faithful special rule may use Acts of Faith as described below. Adepta Sororitas squads joined by a non-Adepta Sororitas independent character may not use Acts of Faith, unless that Independent Character has the Faithful rule. Adepta Sororitas independent Characters joined with units lacking the Adepta Sororitas special rule may not use Acts of Faith unless that unit has the Faithful rule.
Martyrdom is removed, because it encouraged people to kill off their HQs and squad leaders to gain faith points. Instead, Acts of Faith are made generally easier to pass and so Acts of Faith will be scarcer, but more reliable. ____________________
Acts of Faith: The Acts of Faith are described in the exact procedure they should be performed in.
Divine Guidance --Announce which squad is attempting this Act of Faith at the beginning of the shooting or assault phase. --Make a Test of Faith --If passed, apply this rule to that squad for the duration of that phase: ----To-Wound or Penetration rolls of 6 cause the shot/attack to become AP1 and wound regardless of toughness. Hand of the Emperor --Announce which squad is attempting this Act of Faith at the beginning of the assault phase. --Make test of Faith --If passed, apply this rule to that squad for the duration of that phase: ----Attacks made by the squad members are done at Initiative 1, and are increased by +2 Strength. --Not compatible with The Passion. Light of the Emperor --Announce which squad is attempting this Act of Faith at the beginning of the turn. --Make test of Faith --If passed, apply this rule to that squad for the duration of the turn: ----Squad is fearless and may regroup at will. The Passion --Announce which squad is attempting this Act of Faith at the beginning of the assault phase. --Make test of Faith --If passed, apply this rule to that squad for the duration of that phase: ----Squad attacks at +2 initiative and gains +1 attack. --Not compatible with Hand of the Emperor. Spirit of the Martyr --Announce which squad is attempting this Act of Faith at the beginning of the phase. --Make test of Faith --If passed, apply this rule to that squad for the duration of that phase: ----Squad gains an invulnerable save equal to its majority armor save. ____________________
Faith Points: Unless otherwise noted in its entry, each unit with the Faithful rule grants one Faith Point. The total number of Faith points that an army has is calculated at the beginning of the battle. Faith Points are expended by making Tests of Faith (regardless of the result). ____________________
Tests of Faith: Make an unmodified leadership check at the highest unmodified value of any model in the squad. Regardless of the Test of Faith's outcome, the Faith Point is expended. and thus at the end of the Test of Faith, remove one Faith Point counter.
This rule is created because some pieces of wargear will inevitably effect it, despite it being a simple leadership check. ____________________
Shield of Faith: If a psychic power is used on a unit with the Faithful special rule, or includes the Faithful unit in its area of effect, roll D6. On a 5+, it is nullified and effects no models in its area of effect. If multiple Faithful models are in its area of effect, roll only once to determine if the power effects them or not. If the Psychic Power would not effect the Faithful unit, then it is not nullified (IE, a power directed only at psykers, but including a model which is Faithful but not a psyker, does not get nullified). Furthermore, Force Weapons are instead treated as simple power weapons against models with this rule. ____________________
Holy Rage: Counts as having both the Rage and Fleet special rules.
Melissia's note: Because the Adepta Sororitas use Imperial wargear, I will simply mention the more common ones here, as it would be against the rule for me to actually post them. I doubt many on these forums would not know what these wargears do. Similarly, wargears unchanged from C:WH will also have no explanation, so that I can avoid getting in trouble. Those pieces of wargear which do not have an explanation use the latest rules from C:SM, C;IG, or C:WH, whichever one has a more recent explanation of its effects, If I change it, assume the changes are unique to this codex and represent special and specific Adepta Sororitas or Ecclesiarchal equipment.

Special Infantry Wargear
Spoiler:
Blessed Weapon Explanation: Blessed Weapons come in two types, Sanctified Swords and Blessed Blades, depending on their size. Generally, the shorter version is a sword of remarkable quality, but either kind of weapon may fall under a wide range of weapon types-- axes, maces, hammers, flails, and so on. What they all have in common is that they tend to glow white with the Emperor's light, and are all power weapons of great strength.
Rules: * Sanctified Swords: Master-crafted power weapon that adds +2 to strength. 30 points * Blessed Blades: 2-handed Master-crafted power weapon that doubles strength. 35 points
Brazier of Holy Fire: As C:WH
Cloak of St. Aspira: As C:WH
Combi-Stake Launcher: As C:WH
Eviscerator: As C:WH
Excrutiator Explanation: A tool of torture, esecially of witches and heretics. Rules: * If a model with an Excrutiator (or the squad it has joined) removes the last wound from a psyker or a unit containing a psyker, add one more kill point than normal for defeating that unit.
Inferno Pistol: As C:WH
Mantle of Ophelia: As C:WH
Neural Whips: As C:WH
Power Stake Explanation: A holy spear of adamantium, the Power Stake is equipped with a psycho-reactive flamer hidden just inside the tip, so that when it penetrates a Psyker, the flamer activates and completely immolates the target from the inside out in blessed flames. Rules: * Two-handed weapon. At the beginning of the assault, the player chooses wether the weapon will ignore normal saves or invulnerable saves. If a Psyker or Daemon fails its save against a wound caused by the Power Stake, roll a D6. On a 4+, the model is removed from the game as a casualty regardless of how many wounds it still has remaining.
Praesidium Protectiva Explanation: Said to contain pieces of the Emperor's own armor, this shield is a holy relic given only to the most capable heroines. Rules: * Takes up one hand. Grants +1 attack in an assault and a 4++ save.
Twin Masterwork Bolt Pistols Explanation: Heroines that spend a lot of time with Seraphim tend to adopt their chosen charges' weapons as their own. These weapons are invariably extremely high quality, both as shooting weapons and in close combat with their bladed attachments. Rules: * In the shooting phase, counts as having the following stats: R12", S4 AP5, Assault 2 Pistol, Twin-Linked. * In the assault phase, counts as having two master-crafted close combat weapons.
Marksman Autorifles Explanation: Novitiates have not yet earned their expensive power armor and bolter, and thus instead use carapace and these specially made autorifles, designed to have similar weight to a bolter rifle so that when the time comes the Novitiates are able to make the switch without too much trouble. The Marksman Autorifle is a high power autorifle which allows the novitiates to develop their marksmanship skills. Rules: * Two firing modes: * R30", S3 AP6, Heavy 1 Sniper * R24", S3 AP6, Rapid Fire
Shotguns w/Inferno Rounds Explanation: Novitiates have not yet earned their expensive power armor and bolter, and thus instead use carapace and combat shotguns with this specially made ammunition, designed to have similar weight and size to a bolter rifle so that when the time comes the Novitiates are able to make the switch without too much trouble. The shotguns allow the Novitiates to get used to the sights of burning enemies. Rules: * R12", S3 AP6, Assault 2, Ignores Cover Saves
Accurized Bolter Explanation: Standard weapon of the Vindictors, cared for and optimized to an extent that would impress even an Astartes, these boltguns are capable of being used as designated marksman rifles while still also being useful as a normal boltgun. Rules: * Two firing modes: * R36", S4 AP5, Heavy 1 Sniper, Pinning * R24", S4 AP5, Rapid Fire
Ophelia Pattern Heavy Bolter Explanation: A heavy boltgun redesigned for accuracy with special high-density penetration rounds as ammunition. An astoundingly accurate and remarkably rare variant, this weapon is capable of smearing humans across the ground or even damaging tanks, but each individual round must be loaded by hand, making it a rather slow firing weapon. Rules: * R48", S6 AP4, Heavy 1 Sniper, Pinning
Power Spear Explanation: Spears aren't used very often in 40k, so I figured it'd be rather cool to add. It also serves the function of granting a sister superior anti-charge capability, albeit at improved cost over a normal power weapon. Rules: * Two-handed power weapon. Grants +1 to strength in close combat. The user strikes first upon receiving a charge. Against other units which always strike first, this model strikes at the same time as them.
Sarissa Explanation: Wicked serrated attachments to boltguns, almost turning them into short poleaxes. Rules: * Attachment to bolters and combi-bolters. Grants re-rolls to wound in close combat.
Portable Exorcist Launchers Explanation: A mortar-like construction similar to the organ pipes of the Exorcist Missile Launcher, the Portable Exorcist Launcher-- referred to as Exorcist Pipes (or just Pipes for short) by those that carry them-- these launchers use the same payload as the venerable relics from which they take their name. The method of delivery, however, is different-- the missiles are launched up into the air like a mortar and then home in on the target using an infrared spotting device held by the operator. This often allows the user to attempt to direct the missile towards a weak spot in the armor, which they will readilly exploit. Due to the lack of a sizeable blast radius like a true mortar, however, the "pipe-carriers" refuse to fire without using this holy targeting system in order to conserve the relatively rare Exorcist missiles used as ammunition. Rules: * R48", S8 AP1, Heavy 1, Anti-Tank Targeting * Anti-Tank Targeting: A to-hit roll of 6 allows the penetration roll to be made against side armor instead of frontal armor.
"Retribution" pattern Boltcannons Explanation: A multi-barreled variety of heavy bolter, the Boltcannon fires more devastating rounds at a higher rate of fire. The weapon is large enough that it requires two power armored Sororitas to man it, and indeed without power armor it would be unable to be used outside of vehicles and fixed turrets. Rules: * R36", S7 AP4, Heavy 4, Unwieldly * Unwieldly: Takes up two heavy weapon slots, must be operated by two squad members (the second member may not fire that round)

Special Vehicle Wargear
Spoiler:
Exorcist Missile Launcher Rules: * R48", S8, AP1, Heavy. Use the following for number of shots: * Roll a 6-sided die; 1-2: 2 shots, 3-4: 4 shots, 5-6: 6 shots.
Holy Icon Rules: * Allows friendly units within 6" to re-roll failed leadership checks.
Pintle-Mounted Flamer Rules: * A model with this wargear may fire a flamer template (using the standard Flamer stats) with the template touching the base of the vehicle.
Laud Hailers Rules: * Subtracts 1 from the leadership value of all enemy units within 6" of the vehicle. Multiple Laud Hailers are not cumulative. This is especially effective during tank shock, where the effect is -2 instead.
Vengeance Cannon Explanation: A Leman Russ which uses special ammunition whose explosive power comes from the melta effect rather than from pure chemical explosions. While this normally results in somewhat reduced performance against infantry, on directly hitting an enemy tank, this effect becomes notably pronounced. Rules: * R72", S8 AP1, Ordinance 1, Small Blast * When rolling the scatter dice, a direct hit applies an additional 1d6 penetration, for a total of 3d6, ipck the best two.

Angelis Imperial, 40 pts Lore: While technically a new class of combat leader for the Adepta Sororitas, the Angelis Imperial is simply the most veteran Sister Superior present when there are no Adepta Sororitas Heroines to lead the force. This class of leader existed before the Saint Helena Reformation, but was given an official title and authority by the Reformation-- a Sister Superior is named Angelis Imperial and given a small force of Sororitas to deal with minor threats, run patrols, and so on. These are often Palatines in training, although some decline the opportunity to rise in the ranks and instead end up favoring the smaller and more tactical deployments that they are used to. Stats: WS4, BS4, S3, T3, Wn2, I4, A2(3), Ld10, Sv3+ Type:Independent Character, Infantry Composition: * Angelis Imerial, possible retinue Of: * 5 Battle Sisters Wargear: Power Armor, Bolt Pistol, Chainsword, Frag Grenades, Krak Grenades Special Rules:Adepta Sororitas, Book of Saints, Divine Charisma Transport Options: With Retinue: Rhino, Immolator, Repressor, Dropship

Priestess of the Machine, 50 pts Lore: A relatively new rank created during the Saint Helena Reformation, the formation of the Priestesses of the Machine was part of a bargain struck between Helena and the Adeptus Mechanicus. The most mechanically gifted Sororitas of the Order is indoctrinated in the Machine Cult and then trained in its secret methods of maintenance and repair. A few more radical Inquisitors of the Ordo Hereticus objected to this, as they feared that the Mechanicus would use these Priestesses to try and reduce the level of suspicion the Sororitas have towards the Machine Cult-- whether or not these objections have any ground to stand upon remains to be seen. Stats: WS4, BS4, S3, T3, Wn2, I4, A1+1, Ld10, Sv2+ Type: Independent Character, Infantry Composition: Macine Priestess, 0-6 Servitors Wargear: Artificer Armour, Power Weaon, Frag grenades, Krak Grenades Special Rules: Adepta Sororitas, Divine Charisma, Blessing of the Omnissiah Transport Options: Rhino, Immolator, Repressor, Dropship

High Priest(ess), 50 pts Lore: The Ecclesiarchy's reach is vest, and its ability to influence the common men and women of the Imperium is even moreso. When the Ecclesiarchy must rouse its faithful into battle, one of its priests is nominated to lead them-- while the collective ranks of the upper echelons of the Ecclesiarchy may be lacking in knowledge of tactics or strategy, their ability to motivate their troops is second to none. She counts as having initiated assault against any enemy squad in 3+ when she resurrects in such a way. In the case of multiple squads, choose the one assaulted.
Repent! * As long as Celestine is on the board, this Act of Faith may be used: --Announce which squad is attempting this Act of Faith at the start of the assault phase, choosing a squad which is within 12" of Saint Celestine (using her model, not her retinue, to judge distance). --Make test of Faith --If passed, apply this rule to that squad for the duration of that phase: ----Members of the squad gain +1S and +1I. --Not compatible with Hand of the Emperor or The Passion.

Assault Tactics * Celestian Squads may be taken as Troops choices in an army led by Palatine Atraea

* May add up to 5 more squad members at 14 pts each * Entire squad may exchange their chainswords for Bolters with Sarissas. * * Whichever choice is made, these are considered their "basic weapons". * Up to 2 Celestian may replace their basic weapons with: * * Bolt Pistol and Brazier of Holy Flame: +10 pts * * Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon: +10 pts * * Inferno Pistol and Chainsword: +15 pts * * Plasma Pistol and Chainsword: +15 pts * * Power Spear: +10 pts * * Combiflamer w/Sarissa: +10 pts * * Combimelta w/Sarissa: +10 pts * * Combistake-launcher w/Sarissa: +10 pts * * Flamer: +5 pts * * Meltagun: +10 pts * * Storm Bolter w/Blessed Ammunition: +10 Pts

Holy Hatred Explanation: * Training intensified by their holy hatred of all enemies of the Emperor, Celestians are the most skilled combatants of the human race, with only the Astartes veterans surpassing them. Rules: * will always hit on a 3+ in close combat, unless they could do better.
* May add up to 5 more squad members at 15 pts each
*OIDDDE is the following: Only In Death Does Duty End * The Sisters Repentia are filled with a burning desire to redeem themselves for their sins, be they actual or merely perceived. So great is this desire that they are considered fearless in close combat. Furthermore, if they fail a morale or pinning check in the shooting phase, they move forward d6" instead of falling back or going to ground. This is only done once per turn. * Furthermore, Sisters Repentia are faithful, but may not use Acts of Faith. Their faith manifests instead in their ability to shrug off the most grievous of wounds (their save is invulnerable, and they have Feel No Pain).
Mistress of Penitence * As long as the Mistress of Penitence has not been removed as a casaulty, this squad may enter trainsports, and indeed can assault on the same turn it disembarked regardless of how far the transport has moved (unless it deep striked that turn). If the transport has moved, then the squad is treated as having already run, and thus can only make the 6+ assault.
Cult of Penitence * Limited to 0-1 per HQ unit taken.

Sororitas Novitiates Squad 125 Pts Lore They were eager, a good batch of novitiates. Fresh from the Schola, not yet having earned their blessed armour, the novitiates instead honed their marksmanship with their special sniper rifles. [b]Cult of the Blazing Sun Squad 110 Pts Lore Considered somewhat degenerate by the common Sister, the rough and brutal Sisters of the Blazing Sun are nonetheless utterly fanatical. They desire to get into combat as fast as possible and rip their enemies apart with their twin blades, seeing the sword as a holy weapon of the Emperor. To accommodate this, they have taken up armored motorcycles, allowing them to charge into combat right smack into the enemy line so that they can start cutting into their opponents.
The Sisters of the Blazing Sun do not have the refined faith of their foot-slogging Sisters, rather, they are simple and brutal in their message. This is admirable-- they never question their faith-- but at the same time, the more intellectual Sororitas question whether or not they truly understand what it means to be faithful. Blazing Sun Bikes Explanation: * Adorned with symbols of religious zeal and righteous wrath, these bikes are consecrated and held dear to the Sister who rides them, each one becoming as a temple to her-- and nothing motivates a Sister more than fighting from within her own temple! Rules: * (See the Bikes section of the rulebook) Blazing Sun Bikes are equipped with a storm bolter and grant +1 toughness, as well as extra movement.
Unrelenting Zeal * Once a unit of Adepta Sororitas has entered close combat, the Sisters of the Blazing Sun cannot resist their desire to enter combat as well. If an Adepta Sororitas unit is assaulted or assaults an enemy unit, the Sisters of the Blazing Sun count as having Holy Rage.

Adepta Sororitas Dropship, 85 Pts Lore When the Sororitas need to quickly deploy from the transports that deliver them to the planet, they use these specially designed dropships. Pardoner Priest Faithful Citizens have +1 BS (to BS3). Faithful Citizens gain Stubborn Mob Weapons count as lasguns.
Firebrand Priest Faithful Citizens have +1 WS (to WS3). Faithful Citizens gain Fearless Mob Weapons count as laspistols and close combat weapons.
Militia Armored Transport -- An armored bus essentially, 10+ all around with 20 model capacity. Firing points as if it were open topped, but no other benefits or penalties.
A Zealots squad. 1 sergeant, 9-19 zealots, representing penitent gangers, retired guardsmen, mercenaries, etc. Fearless, Feel No Pain, Furious Charge, Holy Rage. Sarge can be upgraded to a priest, squad may take flamers and eviscerators.
Hierophant Siege Tank. A modification of a normal Siege Tank, that has the same blast radius, but sacrifices S10 for S8 and Melta applied on a direct hit on the scatter dice.
Exorcist variants. One variant was a Melta Lance weapon, essentially a twin-linked multi-melta with Lance. Another one fired S4 AP5 cover ignoring blasts instead of S8 AP1 shots.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Subject: Melissia's Codex: Sisters of Battle, designed for Fifth Edition
Looks cool, if I was a Soritas player I'd really give these rules a look-see and consider trying them out. Hopefully when GW gives them a proper codex they'll be similar to this. Also, someone needs to PDF this.

Just skimming through for now, but picked up on a few things:
The Sarissa is currently giving both ranged and CC attacks from the bolter/combi-bolter re-rolls to wound, whereas a poleaxe-like attachment should only be really be usable in CC.
The exorcist missile launcher is quite confusing; does it have 2D3 shots or does it use the D6 system listed beneath it?
The vengeance cannon has 2D6 penetration on a direct hit, but since it's ordnance it also gets 2D6 pick the highest; would it get 4D6 and pick the highest two in this situation?
There are bracketed stats with no real explanation as to why; the Heroine, for example, has 3(4) attacks, but I can't find anything explaining which value to use or why it's like this; when do I use 3 attacks and when do I use 4? Do I always get 4 attacks or only under specific circumstances? Assuming it is 4 attacks, do I still get any bonuses for a pistol/CCW?
When the Vindictor squad re-rolls shooting attacks, does it mean re-rolling hits, wounds, or both? When re-rolling, is every dice thrown re-rolled, or just those that failed?
Is the +1 toughness for Blazing Sun Bikes in addition to the +1 they gained from riding Bikes? Does this increase affect their toughness for the purposes of Instant Death?
Seraphim twin weapons fire twice; do they fire 2 times in total (each weapon firing once) or 4 times in total (each weapon firing twice)?
What does the Sisters of the NightFlame's 'Cult of the Night Flame' special rule do?
The Penitent Engine's Cage of Condemnation rule forces psykers within 6" to pass a leadership check or fall back, does this affect psykers who are also Fearless?
That's all i've got from a quick sweep.
Overall it's a very good codex, with just a few spelling mistakes here and there i'll point out at a later date (if you're bothered by them).

It is 2xD3. 1 or 2 = 2 shots, 3 or 4 = 4 shots, 5 or 6 = 6 shots. These are improved by +2 with the sponsons.

Those are including the character's pistol/ccw I believe.

That doesn't make anything clearer. It says 2D3 shots, and then beneath it tells you to roll a D6 and gives the 1 or 2= 2 shots for the corresponding roll, so which do I roll? Do I roll 2D3 and use what I rolled there as attacks? Or do I roll the D6 as stated below it, and use that? If it were just D6 shots using 1 or 2 = 2 shots system, then it'd be much clearer, as would just 2D3 shots, but as it stands it's confusing.

That's what I thought too, but then it complicates the BP/CCW additional attack, since it isn't mentioned as already taking it into account. No model that I know of with a BP/CCW has the extra attack factored into their statline, though.

Subject: Re:Melissia's Codex: Sisters of Battle, designed for Fifth Edition
I’ve read through chapters II and III and must say, I’m very impressed. Moreso than a simple rehash of the previous material, you’ve freshened it up with some expansion and fresh ideas. I haven’t read the following chapters, yet, to see how it all meshes together, but here are some of my initial thoughts, mostly related to editing and things that I foresee could precipitate a ‘RAW vs. RAI’ sort of debate. I’ll post a follow-up in a few days once I’ve had the chance to check out the armylist proper.
Chapter II:
Adepta Sororitas: Should be affected, not effected. (Effect means result. Affect means influence.) Favored Enemy: Psyker might need expansion (tyranid creatures? Rune priests? etc).
Divine Charisma: Effected to affected. This rule directly references another rule (Book of Saints). GWs work has done this before (Relentless is referenced in Slow and Purposeful, etc) but you hit a problem where you’re forcing a person to look up multiple rules to figure out what this does. Perhaps it would be more straightforward to give HQ models the Book of Saints, and then have Divine Charisma afford the bubble, or simply include the relevant Book of Saints bit in Divine Charisma and therefore delete the added step of looking up book of Saints to interpret Divine Charisma?
Ecclesiarchal Servant: Another special rule referencing other special rules. If Ecclesiarchal Servant equals Faithful + In his Name!, would it not be more user-friendly to just give the Ecclesiarchal Servants these two rules and do away with ES?
In His Name!: I’d change “If an Ecclesiarchal Servant charges,…” to “If a model with this special rule charges,…” since in sentence 2 you establish that an ES will share this rule with the squad it’s joined; thus this rule will be used by a variety of models and will not necessarily be limited to Ecclesiarchal Servants.
Faithful: I’d drop “Martyrdom is removed…” and the rest to a separate paragraph (or make it italics as you did later in Test of Faith), separating the rules from the rationale behind them.
Acts of Faith: I may have missed it, but you say ‘the ___ phase” a few times. Is this just the Adepta Sororitas game turn, or during the opposing players phases (particularly assault) as well? Since GW has published codexes that work both ways, your target audience will likely have conflicting views here and I think clarifying it couldn’t hurt. The acts of faith themselves are very clearly written. Spirit of the Martyr references majority armor save; I don’t think that this is still in the BRB. A bit of explanation may be in order, though it is admittedly pretty self explanatory.
Shield of Faith: Effects to affects.
Chapter III:
Special Infantry Wargear: Blessed Weapon: Typo: [/soiler] visible
Special Infantry Wargear: Excrutiator: Typo: esecially (especially)
Special Infantry Wargear: Power Stake: Typo: wether (whether)
Special Infantry Wargear: Shotgun: Typo: sights (sight)
Special Infantry Wargear: Accurized Bolter: The name doesn't seem very Imperial/Ecclesiarchal to me. It’s sniper and pinning. My BRB’s in the other room, so I may be wrong, but doesn’t the Sniper rule automatically grant Pinning? This goes for the Ophelia Pattern heavy Bolter, as well.
Special Infantry Wargear: Sarissa: Rerolls for wounds? Or rerolls for wounds in close combat?
Special Infantry Wargear: Exorcist Launcher: It seems very ‘high-tech’, perhaps too much so, to me.
Special Infantry Wargear: Retribution Boltcannon: I’m of the opinion that ‘takes up two heavy weapon slots’ might be more elegantly stated in the unit lists- …this unit may take one special and one heavy weapon, two special weapons, or a single Retribution Boltcannon…” thus keeping all the logistics in the same place.
Is this a piece of wargear, given to one specific squad member, and requiring the assistance of a second, but non-specific, squad member? What happens if there’s only one Sister left in the entire squad? Would the Artillery rules in the BRB be a good fit for this weapon?
Special Vehicle Wargear: Holy Icon Typo- visible

Do I always get 4 attacks or only under specific circumstances? Assuming it is 4 attacks, do I still get any bonuses for a pistol/CCW? 5: When the Vindictor squad re-rolls shooting attacks, does it mean re-rolling hits, wounds, or both? When re-rolling, is every dice thrown re-rolled, or just those that failed? 6: Is the +1 toughness for Blazing Sun Bikes in addition to the +1 they gained from riding Bikes? Does this increase affect their toughness for the purposes of Instant Death? 7: Seraphim twin weapons fire twice; do they fire 2 times in total (each weapon firing once) or 4 times in total (each weapon firing twice)? 8: What does the Sisters of the NightFlame's 'Cult of the Night Flame' special rule do? 9: The Penitent Engine's Cage of Condemnation rule forces psykers within 6" to pass a leadership check or fall back, does this affect psykers who are also Fearless?
Thanks for the feedback. I'll answer these here and edit the answers into the post (I did want people to help me edit, which is part of the reason I posted it here in full).
1: Thanks, I'll make it only in assault. 2: Hm. I think I'll go with the d6 system and remove the 2d3. 3: I'm thinking it'd get 3d6 pick the highest two. 4: The Canoness has 3(4) because she has a pistol and CCW as her starting weapons. If she takes a two-handed weapon (such as a boltgun) she'd lose the bracketed attack. 5: Thanks for catching that. It's intended to be re-rolling failed to-hit rolls. 6: It's representative of the basic bonuses for bikes. No, wargear doesn't increase toughness for the purposes of instant death (but that isn't an issue as no Blazing Sun Sister has two wounds). 7: Two times. I'll try to edit it to be more clear. 8: Ugh, I missed that when transferring to this format. It's the same thing as the other Cult of the (name) rules, 0-1 per HQ choice taken. 9: I will make it a morale check, so that they automatically pass.
Avatar 720 wrote:That's what I thought too, but then it complicates the BP/CCW additional attack, since it isn't mentioned as already taking it into account. No model that I know of with a BP/CCW has the extra attack factored into their statline, though.
The Mistress Repentia in C:WH has her extra attack factored in, but she IS an odd unit.

2: Ecclesiarchal Servant: Another special rule referencing other special rules. If Ecclesiarchal Servant equals Faithful + In his Name!, would it not be more user-friendly to just give the Ecclesiarchal Servants these two rules and do away with ES?
3: Acts of Faith: I may have missed it, but you say ‘the ___ phase” a few times. Is this just the Adepta Sororitas game turn, or during the opposing players phases (particularly assault) as well? Since GW has published codexes that work both ways, your target audience will likely have conflicting views here and I think clarifying it couldn’t hurt. Thanks for catching all those typos and other misc errors. Some responses:
1: I should actually do that. Combine it into Divine Charisma, I mean. Thanks for the suggestion. 2: Actually I was thinking of just renaming In His Name to Ecclesiarchal Servant and doing away with Ecclesiarchal servant. Same effect in the end. 3: It's intended to be usable in either your phase or your opponent's phase. But only one phase per Act of Faith.. 4: It's no more high-tech than, say, hunter-killer missiles or hell, even the exorcist itself. I think it's fine. 5: Can you help me re-write the Retributor heavy weapon choices then, to put this suggestion in? 6: Yes. I didn't include any rules for if there's only a single Sister mostly to avoid complication of rules. Dunno about the Artillery rules....

No I didn't.
It's Laud Hailers. "laud/lôd/ Verb: Praise highly, esp. in a public context"

Monstrous Creatures don't get S10 from DCCWs as they're not walkers. Might want to change that. I like the idea of turning the Penitent Engine into an MC though.

Err, DCCWs simply grant S10 and ignore armor saves in close combat, IIRC.
Actually what I DO need to change isn't strength, but initiative, which DCCWs don't effect.

They "double the walker's strength". As the PE in this incarnation isn't a walker, it doesn't gain strength. You're right about initiative and the PW-effect though.

A fair question. Here's the disadvantages I see:
1: Very few blasts. The army's main strength is in its close ranged templates and bolter shock.
2: The army is almost all S3/T3, and indeed the troops themselves are WS3/I3 as well. This means they're relatively fragile in both assault and shooting.
3: Only one unit which is AV14 or better, only two which are AV13 or better. The Heirophant, when it is finished, will round it out with another AV13, and the only unit with a large blast.
4: Faith is powerful and easy to activate, but a very limited resource at just over one point per squad for the entire game.
5: Special characters are expensive for T3 models which don't have any overly strong army-wide rules.
6: The army has very few long ranged weapons, most of them are in heavy support.
7: Despite the changes, the army continues to have problems with AV14, especially monoliths, as it must rely on melta rules to reliably punch through (even the Leman Russ in the codex only gets Melta applied 1 out of every 3 shots).

But, in the spirit of making it a good Codex - where are the DISadvantages? The things the codex is BAD at?
In my opinion, this is the wrong way of looking at things. A good codex should have multiple ways of making competent "all-comers" lists that require some amount of finesse to be competitive. Finesse is the key part; even an army of powerful, tough, well-rounded units can be difficult to win with because of low model count. It all comes down to whether the point values and limitations on number and types of units are appropriate.
I couldn't tell from just reading the army list whether the point values are "correct". I think it would take a few months of play testing to weed out overpowered rules and tweak point values, but overall I think this is a good looking codex. It does the Sisters justice to make them look powerful and scary - they ARE powerful and scary, they're zealously religious shock troops who are armed to the teeth! Their main weakness is the fact that, in spite of their weapons, their armor, and their faith, they are only human, and few in number (they also have always had few options for long-range anti tank, and don't field much heavy armor, so make the Leman Russ variant (0-1) and I'm happy!)

Just a small note, Stormfather provided the third quote's worth of suggested changes, not me
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.
Excerpt from "Seeress of Kell", Book Five of The Malloreon series by David Eddings.
"You need not fear us, unless you are a dark heart, a vile one who preys on the innocent; I promise, you can’t hide forever in the empty darkness, for we will hunt you down like the animals you are, and pull you into the very bowels of hell." Iron - Within Temptation

There, fixed some formatting errors and put the CORRECT version of the Nightflame squad up (that is, the version with the customization I intended to have in there).
If noone finds any more critical errors, I'll work on the typos and grammatical errors that you guys find tomorrow, once I compile a list of what you've found

Well done. You removed the flamer option in the dropship, but kept holy promethuim as an option, other than that not much I can think to add off the top of my head. I'd let you field this in a heartbeat.

Whilst i like the feel of the your codex as a whole; i take issue with some of the points costs.
Exorcists are too cheap... especially with the option to add the sponsons.
I'd be more happy with seraphim using Hit and Run at I4.... a 2/3 chance of escaping combat whenever you want is good enough for me.
Also, Penitent engines seem a bit undercosted. They shouldn't have an invulnerable save (crappy though it may be), FnP would be a better rule if you want to keep the cost the same.
Imho, all the SoB needed was a change in points cost and a couple of extra troop choices; rather than the crap i now have to play in GW stores :S

To make the Boltcannon follow existing rules for multi-crew field guns, why not make it into an IG-style weapon team, or put it into an Artillery unit with perhaps a few more options? I'm picturing a Melta cannon with a pavise-like gunshield packing SS tech and making it into a breaching gun. And maybe a two-crew flamer weapon, perhaps an Inferno cannon.
I don't think you and I will ever agree on the shape of the Sororitas, even if we can find common ground on the scope. Even so, the ideas are great food-for-thought and in some ways point out how GW should escape the extremely limited paradigm they set up for SoB. This was a tremendous effort and your dedication is obvious. I look forward to perusing this thread again and again.
My views on them are essentially a professional crusader army based off of what I've read in the lore, influenced slightly by the Vatican's army in Hellsing for both its professional and elite nature as well as its undeniable zeal, as well as the historical Knights Hospitaller (fitting also because of the Sisters Hospitaller), whom were both crusaders and (ideally) protectors.
Regardless, sorry for not updating this in the past week, I've had schoolwork to do. I'll do the corrections (thanks again, guys) this weekend probably.
