Ok so I have had a few people ask me about the damage on my tanks over in my Imperia Australis thread.
Linkage: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/362718.page
So without further pause here is the Sticky tape method of battle damaged/ chipped and torn paint work.
What you need!
1. Your layers of paint (in this case 2 Mith silver and Mord Blue, but you can go to roughly 4 without it looking odd)
2. Spray on Clear coat or varnish, you can do it with paint on varnishes as well just takes longer.
3. brushes ... but you knew that already.
4. Sticky tape of some kind (keep in mind the more tacky/sticky the more paint it will grab)
5. Something to paint ... you also knew that.
Ok
Step 1#
Paint your part/mini/model silver or whatever your base colour will be (might be bone for eldar) and seal it with the clear coat, allowing it to be touch dry.
Step 2#
Paint on your layers of paint (do not seal them if using more then one colour only seal the silver or base layer).
Step 3#
Use your tape and press onto the flats and details, now by rough pulling it along the surface and away (you can get a different wear effect by pulling the tape in different directions and
by applying more pressure when placing the tape on your mini). you will pull off the top layer(s) of paint leaving the sealed under layer exposed.
Step 4#
Repeat until you have your desired look.
Examples
Oh and if anyone is curious, yes you can do this method using an air gun as well.

It's also a very quick method as well, if you only want light scrapes you can use that frosted looking tape, you may have to reapeat in one spot a couple of times but it's good for little rips
on edges and around doors or detail.
MrTau wrote:Good idea! Mayby you shuold paint blaxk around the scratch marks to give a little deph.
If you paint black on top of the sealed silver then paint the main colour, when you tear it you often get the black lining in a natural looking way, I found this out after I finished the work on my tanks
but it can be tricky and be prepared to go over a spot or two. My photo's are not that clear but on the Chimera I used a wash which outlined most of the detail prettywell in person.
UselesswizarD wrote:Wow, that's a great idea! Thanks for sharing! Do you mind if I add this technique to a weathering tutorial video (and give you total credit of course)? The kids at my FLGS would really benefit from it.
You can add away, though I'm not sure I pioneered this method, I was shown this ages ago at a hobby club by a nice old fella who used it to weather his model trains, but I don't
see it used often which is strange because it works so well.
Oh and another tip with this method as you use the tape it gets the paint all random on it which makes for even better loooking damage so the longer you can use one strip of tape the better the effect.

Does this work with Primer? Reason being is I'm using my battle wagons as mainly black with red/silver scars, wondering how it would work with that idea.

If your reffering to the hot salt method;
I like that look as well but just find it a bit fiddly/time consuming and with 3 young kids in the house
I'm not fond of the idea of having a hot pan of piping hot salt sitting around, which is why I opted for the sticky tape path.
Also on the note of 3 young kids they acutally can help when doing the damage look and think it's fun to attack dad's toys with the tape
which demonstrates how simple this method actually is my oldest is 4).

It's a costly hobby, it's nice to find some ways to beat the cost.

As in Spray primer? if so then yes it works with spray as long as you seal off the first under coat layer anything over that will peel/tear with the tape.
With some sprays you may find you need a higher grade of tape though.

I'm thinking he was referring to the hairspray+salt method of weathering where you spray an area after basecoating with hairspray or a mild adhesive and sprinkle salt on it, then paint over it before scraping the salt off to show the undercoats. Similar to what you're doing here, but a little more involved.

Thanks for all the great comments guys and your welcome to those who thanked me in kind.
Update. (sorry no pics)
I've been messing with a few different types of tape and thought I share the outcomes.
Cheap (2 dollar shop) clear tape:
Barely takes any paint off and requires multiple attempts to show any real damage, this sounds bad but actually it's a good tape to use if you are layering the effect eg. Metal the black then blue.
As it only takes a minimal amount of the top layer away.
Cheap Frosted Tape:
I found that this tape took large sections away without a lot of effort which is not the best result unless you have a large surface (tank or titan that kind of thing).
However, cut it into very thin strips and apply it to the edges/joins/verts of a model and it tears away a nice edge line.
Masking tape (the cream coloured papery looking stuff):
A stronger rip than the cheaqp clear but overall similar, I did find that it took more off the longer you left it or the harder you pressed it onto the model.
Packing tape (the brown plastic stuff):
Rips up everything in sight very sticky stuff probably best to not use it.
Duct tape:
If apllied lightly the checkered patern on the underside of the tape rips in a very unique manner almost giving a circuit board look if applied just slightly wrong it rips up
everything in sight much like the packing tape.

Wow, thanks! It's effective, economical, and even a little bit fun to see what the random damage looks like!
BTW - what's frosted tape? Is it just semi-opaque sellotape, or is it another kind altogether?

Well the pack I got from the 2 buck shop said frosted tape but yeah probably just semi opaque, it's likely the same thing.
I'm going to try book binding tape as well the string fibres should give an interesting effect.
If anyone is trying this method out (any tape will do) post some pics lets see how it turned out!!
you can also get a silicon based glue tape (hot glue gun looking stuff) not sure how that would go though.
and tilers tape (a type of masking tape used to remove grout) and plaster tape (for gyproc walls) I'll try and give them all a go.

I really like this. My only questions are, do you wait for the layers to fully dry before using the tape and how long do you leave the tape on before peeling? Again this looks awesome.
