First of all I need to say that I love the look people are achieving with Air Brushes, but I'm just way too poor to get myself one.

So anyway I wanted to find a way to paint black that still showed shades and didn't have the very harsh bright grey edge highlights.

I copied a technique I saw online and here are the results so far:
(The only colors close to finished in this WIP are black and bone)

I didn't have the primer/base used in the tutorial so my method was:

Black undercoat
Codex Grey
Badab Black wash
Devlan Mud wash
Badab Black wash
Badab Black wash

Super easy method to paint and I'm pretty happy with these results. Hardest part of it is waiting for washes to dry.

Kind of difficult to get a good sense of the color/shading, as natural shadows are interfering, but I definitely like what I can see. Time to check out that link...

Another technique I use is to prime blacl, then to a very light drybrush of Fenris Grey. Over this are done 2-3 washes of Badab Black. Nice bit of highlighting, but without your black armour becoming blue/grey armour
