So we've made some changes, expect this first post to be altered soon, head down to my most recent post to see whats going down.

So what brought me to Infinity?

I'm not one hundred percent certain of the actual deciding factor but I had been seeing excellent new figs appear in the N&R section of Dakka for a long while, but it wasn't something I was going to go and pick up. Then last spring, a couple of figures caught my eye in particular, I can't even remember which ones, I have a feeling it was this one..

but it made me take a look over at Maelstrom. I was really into Mass Effect at the time, and I noted the slight connection in style, and loved the ranges on show.

I'd just missed out on the intro deals they ran at the beginning of the year, and even without the saving, there was a lot of enthusiasm for the game on Dakka, and somewhere along the line I joined in. I chatted to Aurelia about it, and after she took a look at the range at Maelstrom she found an interest in Haqqislam. She has always had a soft spot for arabian culture and the myths of the Middle east, so admitted they could peak her interest, so I snatched at the chance to give the game a try.
Being my usual 'Dark Elf self' I had to pick the deviants of the setting. Although Yu Jing and ALEPH also interested me when I was first looking. Oddly it was model availability that was a key factor in my final choice, as my prefered Yu Jing choice was not in stock, so Nomads it was.

So there we where in May last year.

It was a start and we quickly got the figures and put them together. In the first week I got them undercoated, got base colours on them, gave them a wash and managed to get in a trial game with Aurelia that showed us that we could get into the system.

Then we discovered Aurelia was carrying our third, and yeah, anyone here who has had kids knows what that chaos brings to the household. With two other boys, seven and five at the time, chaos reigned for a little while. Infinity, and wargamming in general was pushed aside and sat on the shelf, watching as our lives moved on around them.

Skipping some eleven months later, with some kind of normality settling on the house, (after I rushed through painting up two 40K armies for my boys for my birthday battle on March the 4th taking up most of my limited painting time over the winter) I suddenly found myself stuck with what to do.

I had Guard to paint, but something drew me towards my poor Infinity figs. They had been sitting there with their base coat and a few touch ups for nearly ten months, so I decided it was time to head back to my Nomads. Sixth for 40K is still potentially three to four months away and with luck I could not only get my initial forces finished, but add a few pieces and get my Infinity themed Terrain up and running as well.
So I began painting them again. First off I just wanted to step them in the direction I had for the theme of my forces.

My idea was to have three distinct scheme for each of the Nomad craft. Grey would be the connecting colour across the units. While Corregidor would be yellow with a urban camo style on their grey, with touches of fire/red due to the concept of my Corregidor forces being a merc band nicknamed the 'Hellions' who also work directly for Nomad command as Strike team Beta. Sorta like privateers, will screw over any faction but their own as long as the price is good enough.

For Bakunin I have this strange idea of pink, blues, purples and white with hints of grey. This is partially due to the pick at the top of this first post, and all my Morias will be based on her. In a painting inspiration thread in DCM, BlueDagger got it spot on with a 'they look like a rave party' comment. That wasn't the key thought behind it, but what he said summed them up perfectly, and this sort of over the top decedance will be my target for Bakunin.

For Tunguska I am sticking with Red, Black and grey, this is an odd sub-faction for me at the moment as I only have the lone figure, but I am sure that will change in time as I am a huge fan of the Szalamandra model and can see me having one sooner than later.

With these schemes in mind I am plowing on. As of a few days ago I am here, still a fair bit to do, but they are definately getting there.

So with the painting well in hand, it is time to look towards my terrain, which I will cover in a following post.

I hope that was not too long winded, please let me know if it is. As I will be trying to find my blog style with this little journey into Infinity and I am trying to make things semi interesting for those who wish to read it.

Comments, criticism and such are all welcome and I am happy to respond to any questions folks might have.

Thanks for reading.
MDS.

Well you have accomplished more on yours in a month or so then I have on mine in over a year lol. Got some close up shots of some of them? Gotten any games in yet?

The shot of the board up above could use a lot more low level cover. There is a lot of sniper roosts that will dominate that board.

Cheers for the comments, I truly appreciate that some folks are reading and enjoying my rambling.

Regarding close ups, I plan on taking better pics from now on, front and back as well. Will start on my next progress update for the Nomads, which will be either easter Monday or the Tuesday as I plan on painting over the weekend.

Agree with the terrain, thats pretty much all 40K related stuff being used as a stand in, but will explain in more detail about my terrain plans in the next post, hopefully later today.

Excellent intro post (and congrats on the new(ish ) child as well!).

Look forward to seeing your force come together - I like using the different colours to represent the different ships.

Though your last two images don't show up for me... edit - fixed now

Cheers SilverMK2 its been fun having a little one in the house again.

Oh and aye, the ship thing was a key factor in my painting strategy. I like the idea of having three forces in the long run which can be used in their own right, or be brought together depending on the circumstances, having their own colour schemes seemed a natural move, well in my mind.

Terrain - or covering the table with stuff aka Lost in the woods

From the helpful members of Dakka who have been playing Infinity much longer than myself. The one thing that is repeated again and again to new players who come into the game is terrain, lots of it, make sure plenty of it blocks LoS.

Reading the book this fast becomes apparent why, with the ARO system of reacting to pretty much anything an opposing figure does when its in LoS of an enemy, keeping your head down has never been more apparent for wargamers than it is in Infinity.

It adds a lovely dynamic to the game, and even though I've only played the one battle so far *hangs head in shame* that battle showed me in no uncertain terms that charging at the enemy across open ground like you often do in 40K with a slight risk, is almost suicidal in Infinity.

Even though I have a lot of 40K terrain, the bits in the battle pick in my first post of this blog are all put together for 40K for example. It will be a general goal of mine via this blog to have stuff that is recognized as Infinity via markings and style. So with that thought in mind and a need to have themed terrain for the game, I have set my sights on producing a number of housing based pieces, and various other bits

After thinking about it last week, I have decided to keep my temperate theme for Infinity, as I like the look of the bases, and the idea of darting through trees in the game appeals to me. Of course it also means the Infinity figs and terrain will match with the 40K scenery, so rocks, boulders and the forest pieces I have already done will sit happily alongside.

I also like the idea of the battles between Aura and myself either taking place on some temperate planet, possibly where Ariadna are, or some other locale that has something of strategic value there.
To that end, I plan on doing some farms to fight around intially, then expand it to be the edge of a small rural town backing into the country side. So by the time I am finished on a 4x6 foot table a third would be the town, then some greenry, rock formations and other blocking terrain, then the farm house and such.

Once that is all done, I can swap things in and out as required.

So to start I thought I'd go with the simple buildings, a couple of storage buildings for the farm. My idea is even with the modern tech, its easier to patch and repair than build from fresh, so I've gone for a worn and shack like look for them both. My general thoughts is what ever the reason for the conflict on the world, its brought the rival factions back numerous times, if they leave at all. So the poor farm has seen plenty of action over the years.

Building 1

Building 2

As of this morning I have based both buildings, so once dry I can add details and other touches before moving onto painting.
The next building after these will be a Barn which will look a little more cared for, and then I'll move onto the farmhouse, which is my intial plans come together will be multi leveled, with a balcony and veranda. I am also considering a corner piece farmhouse, which will be half way up a slope.

As with the infinity figs themselves, I plan on keeping up with this blog, and unless something occurs that causes a major delay, I plan on doing 'at least' one update post a week for the forseeable future.
If it inspires even just one person to take a look at the game, then my work here will be done.

Thanks for reading.

A good start on terrain there - I've been working on a bit of dual purpose infinity/40k terrain as well... it is good to build up a stock of stuff which can be used for either

Looking forward to seeing them with some paint/etc on

Wow lots of quality content in the initial posts! Not really an infinity guy, i like the idea of converting; even if i usually don't bother , even though the models are great. I will continue following this. Maybe some closer photos of the models? Your painting seems good, i just cant quite see the details from the currrent photos.

Oh and trust you to pick the faction with the highest ratio of Sexy Space Babes

Are infinity models as hard to paint as they look? I would find all the tiny details a nightmare.

Nice blog! Those buildings look pretty good...they would make for some fun games especially if you got into more story/scenario driven games. A hostage rescue scenario would be great.

I also rather like your forces, those nomads look awesome. I'd like to see some better pics, though.

Keep it up!

@ Pacific - cheers, and aye the colour scheme is working for me as well, which I note as thats not always the case.
More than one army attempt has been sidetracked or even dropped because I couldn't find a happy medium in the painting department.

Terrain will be a focus, I plan on making a order from Micro arts studio (think thats the name) for some of the town stuff, to expand on and base bits on.

However a lot of it will be my own attemts at designing Infinity related terrain. Based on its own artwork and settings of a similar nature, such as Mass Effect and Halo.

@Perkustin, thanks, and closer pics will be a feature of following posts. I have been painting this weekend, and although not quite finished. I plan on doing an update post on their progress tomorrow.

As to the actual painting, they aren't too bad, just requiring a slightly steady hand on some parts. With my old shaking fingers, it can be a little 'clench fists and breath' at times. However there is not a great deal of difference I am finding.
Will see if my opinion changes on final details such as eyes and any text etc.

@Cave_Dweller - thanks, and yeah scenario play will be something we will be looking at. Probably try and arrange some sort of campaign once I get most of the board down and Aura paints her Haqqislam.

Also yep, with you on the pics, expect better ones tomorrow.

Have done some painting this weekend, however sadly got a 24hr sickness bug yesterday, so my plans to try and get to almost the final stage fell a little flat. However I have done skin tones, some more touch ups and taken some better pics.
Note - these are all hosted in the Dakka Gallery, so if you click on the pic, you get taken there and can zoom a little closer.

Going to go sit down for a bit, have a bit of the cold sweats going on. Will update again before the end of the week, and obviously happy to answer any queries.

Just a note, this has not been forgotten already.

I am currently painting five figs for the Infinity Painting Comp here on Dakka, so I can pick my fave and enter it.

However as I can't reveal what I am up too as part of the rules, this blog is under a short break while I am concentrating on them.

I have done some work on the Bakunin above, which I think is a marked improvement, and not quite as I intially planned, so will share those asap.

However once I am entered, expect more and regular updates, including some wip shots I am taking of the comp entries as I am working on them to post after it ends and the winner is picked.

Cheers

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

Okies, so after this slipped away it becomes apparent that I have some kind of ADD when it comes to modelling. I'm good for a while, but some new shiny comes up and I'm lost to it for a few months, then onto something else. With this in mind and the fact I have started somethings in the past and then lost them in the chaos I live in, perhaps it is time to focus everything into this one thread.

The workbench type blog has been popular for some, and it seems to fit with my style of gaming and modelling. So with that in mind, the start of sixth edition in 40K and my plans to have a Mordheim revival at my home this summer, we shall break the walls down and begin anew.

The fact this will be my 17'000th post here on Dakka is also a extra milestone. Okay I'll be honest, those of you who are DCM reading this, will know a fair bit of my current post count belongs to my 'art' thread in DCM land, however I have been hanging around Dakka off and on now for almost nine years. A quarter of my lifespan so far. So I really want to see this through and give something back to the Dakka community. I'd like to think I am quite handy with my terrain, so if nothing else will share that with folks here, but also my armies as they shift and evolve.

So yes, Infinity will still appear in this thread, but expect to see alot more wargamming in here, 40K, Mordheim, and anything else that takes my fancy.

So what have I been doing to distract me away from Infinity these past couple of months. (If you want any close ups, click on the pics to go to the Dakka Gallery where you can scroll in, seems my Camera is a good un. The Space Wolf Scouts are my faves in that lot.)

And some close up shots

The Platform has been designed so it can be at a table edge, however I am just starting work on a second slightly smaller piece.
This will mean the cliff backs into a defense tower that will sit a further ten inches higher, with a walkway like trench cut into the rock around it and more internal stuff, that will let it become a centre piece.

Expect to see more soon, I plan on using this thread to spur me on, and get going with my modelling and painting. Hope folks approve.

Well not been doing a great deal the past few days, however I have got my new sub regiment for my Greater Guard army on the go.

The Hellesvour 21st, will focus on Catachan ideals, mixed in with some other bits and bobs. The Guard are made up of Catachan, some Cadian and Victoria Lambs Highland guard pieces.

Its a volcanic deathworld, with a Highland Clan structure for leadership. The Tanks used by Vics own guard for the now defunct Stimulants Doctrine, now represent water canisters, as the world taught them the one thing you don't want to be caught without is water.

You can zoom in, in the gallery, so click on the pic and you can get a good close up if wanted.

Will be working to finish them off as the week goes on. I also have some odd ideas for my Orks I want to start playing with soon and also more work on my Terrain in general.

Started work on my two Dark Vengeance boxes. This first one has no real conversion work, just additional bits from the Dark Angels Veteran sprue. Things like extra icons, symbols and the banners. However there are also a few other conversions like using bolters from the vets sprue and the hands to hold, clipped and fitted and tidied up with a bit of green stuff.
