Not as Good as a Minion

You will need to collaborate with the other members of the Citadel Rules team, the Background Writers and the Product Developers to get clear on what the rules need to do, then write exciting, innovative rules that accomplish that.
You will be responsible for creating all types of rules content for Warhammer Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40,000 publications. You will also be required to create new games mechanics for our growing range of box games such as ‘Betrayal at Calth’ and ‘Execution Force’.
We know what makes this job hard is being able to deliver exciting, dynamic rules that fulfill the product brief, to a tight deadline.

They probably just need someone to come up with new silly dances and funny noises to shout for new updates to Age of Sigmar. Those rules don't just write themselves you know!

Depends on how many new writers get the job.
Worst situation would be that 1 guy should support 40k, BoC & AoS and develop new rules for the board games at the same time.
No testing, no one to talk about the designs, no one to help the writing done in time
Then we will see the worst rules ever made because it is not possible to get this done alone.
If every system get 2 writers and another 2 to develop new games, than there is the possibility that the days of bad rules are over.

They are unlikely to get someone talented unless they've massively changed their recruiting policy... last time I went for an interview for a creative job there (about 7 years back, admittedly -- the position was an editorial and writing one) they lied about the salary (it took a £6K drop in the week between my agreeing to travel down, and the actual interview), which was already pretty low, and made it clear that, as ever, their main desire was to recruit yes-men cogs-for-the-Machine-God rather than anyone with any skill or background doing the job.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Even if we do get a good writer he will probably end up getting too demoralised and loose interest as GW pile on the pressure.

I haven't been able to determine if it was intended to be a board game in it's own right (like Bloodbowl) or if it's just a one-shot delivery mechanism for minis (like Assassination Force), but I don't see much talk about the game itself which is available for peanuts on eBay. It's meant to have decent enough mechanics for a change though but my assumption is the rules were still fitted around the minis.

£17K. I'd made it clear to them on the phone the week before that that wouldn't be enough to get me and my family moving to Nottingham. And this was me with around 7 years of full-time tabletop game design & writing experience.

WOW! How can a multimillion company pay so little to its core design team? Well, I apply to these studio positions - but I would never take a pay cut to take one up.
EDIT: And that would be a severe pay cut if that's the money they still offer.

I think £17k wouldn't even allow you to live in Scunthorpe, lol. Surely shelf staking in tescos full time would get you close to that sort of money?

Average pay in 2008 was about £26K. There's been no significant rise since then (recession innit). But yeah, I couldn't have afforded to move, for that. They'd initially said around the £23K mark -- which would still have been tight, but manageable.

GW salaries are in general very low and the company has a major imbalance in internal pay due to the legacy of its transition from a private company to PLC.
My understanding is that:
Painters get it worst, I think they are on 15k (whatever the UK minimum wage is)
Design Studio types get around £18k to start with I understand, be they involved in the physical product or IP product. Their is progression, but not a lot.
For roles in which there is a job market, salaries tend to be a bit more market proximate, so publishing is poor (As a Black Library editor I was offered 19.5k about 10 years ago, which was about the market rate really outside London), media is a bit better and the finance, legal and operational dept manager roles are the best paying jobs.
Long-term higher-ups are on wages that are linked to the fact that the company used to pay royalties on products to designers. Those who have joined since it became a PLC cannot expect to ever reach that level, so as a member of the design studio, you will simply cannot aspire to earn what Jervis earns while remaining with the company.

I can only hope that he doesn't try to reinvent the wheel....I don't know how he is in the rule writing department but his performance as Mantic's community liaison doesn't engender much confidence.

Bac is actually a very solid board game. I prefer it to current 40k and it has a decent following on boardgamegeek---for the game not just the minis.
