Very nice indeed, both the writing and the painting. I think the lightning claw marine is my favorite. Great pose on him. Keep up the writing too. Sometimes I find that I spend more time on the fluff then the painting but after you spend so much time staring at a model and making it come to life, it's hard not to create a story in your mind throughout the process.

Ok, so, the B+C summer painting competition is over now, which means dusting off the half finished projects that weren't eligible for the competition and sorting through the bits to find something new. for me that's meant getting back to my breacher squad (I dimly remember promising to finish them before the year's out...) and picking up my Deathwatch side-project.

This Breacher will end up looking a touch different to the others with the idea being that he's responsible for clearing a breach that isn't quite as practical as intel suggested, so lots of meltabombs and some parts to indicate slightly heavier duty armour.

Like a lot of people, the Badab War books fostered in me an affinity for certain chapters, one of those being the Minotaurs, an affinity that was rekindled when reading IA: 12. In that book there were references to Minotaur assault squads fighting alongside Deathwatch insertion teams in subterranean catacombs and I imagine this marine being headhunted to join the Deathwatch ranks after they saw what he was like in the field.

With my Deathwatch hat on I've decided to expand on my existing handful of models and bring them up to a full 10 man squad + Watch Captain. Currently I have a Black Templar and Crimson Fist in stationary poses and a Raven Guard marine who's running. I'm going to model half of them in motion and the other half static so that a combat squad split is more obvious. The Minotaur is a first step towards rounding out the moving combat squad whose other members will be a Salamander (see below), Blood Angel and Silver Skull. The Watch Captain (see below) is going to be a counts-as Pedro Kantor Black Shield. Eventually I plan to give them a heavy-bolter or assault cannon Razorback and a heavy bolter Mortis Dread (they are Xenos killers, high rate of fire weapons with middling AP values seems about right to me).

To all of you who commented on the fluff thank you ever so much. I do some writing in my spare time and have a semi-done screen-play with a mate, so obviously I fancy myself as something of a writer, but I've never really tried to 'bring it' in my fluff until now and I'm really pleased with and appreciative of the positive responses.

Nash - cheers, buddy. The Deathwatch stuff I mentioned above is going to be a big part of my immediate future as are the remaining 2 (and a half) breachers), but I've also got four members of a tactical squad and a half finished Furioso still to do. Not to mention various other things I've got the parts for and are sitting undercoated waiting to be started like my Mephiston conversion. So, in short, plenty!

lipsdapips - thanks a lot.

Ice Angel - Thanks, the claws marine is a favourite of mine, too, he almost looks more sergeant-y than the actual sergeant. Three years since diving back into the hobby I think about fluff a lot more than I initially did and you're right, it does help sort of round off the whole modelling/painting process. Conversely, I find increasingly that a piece of fluff can help inspire a model rather than be inspired by one.

@sockwithaticket - I find that my motivation to create anything is usually fluff driven. I started writing a book a while back here on dakka, the inspiration being some marine swaps I did with people. I'm onto book two now and I have to say that more then half of my hobby projects are inspired by my own writing. It's all about "forging the narrative" right?

I like your breacher guy. Any time you can give a marine a chain axe always seem to make them cooler. What's that on his left hand?

Ok, update time after a little Malifaux distraction.

Minotaur is done:

He has a combat shield purely for aesthetic purposes. I remember reading that they are a particularly attritional chapter when it comes to close range fire fights and thought the shield would be a nice nod to that. Given that I was inspired by The Fall of Orpheus I thought I'd hint at it by giving him a Necron trophy. That head is from the last Necron he killed in the campaign.

Silver Skull is done:

Made a start on the Blood Angel Sergeant:

This sneakily allows me to try out a different red as I decide how to do an original son of Sanguinius for my envoys without having to d a full test model. I also tried out a different way of doing gems. After browsing through the BA showcase thread on B&C for the umpteenth time a remarkable Death Company Rhino by the user Taz caught my eye, particularly the green blood drop decorations at the rear http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119231-the-blood-angels-showcase/page-46 and I attempted to do the Sergeants blood drop gem in a similar fashion. Mine's nowhere near as good but it was a change to how I'd normally approach a gem and I quite like it

I also cobbled together the bits to make a Deathwatch Librarian (because when I'm fixated on a project my actual work rate comes a distant second to my brain's rate at coming up with ideas)

Now, hands up if you use back banners. Anyone? Yeah, me neither, which is a shame as a lot of them have some pretty cool icons atop their pole. Once you've been collecting marines for a while you tend to acquire quite a few of them and they sit there unused. Until now! Ta-dah:

Banner toppers used to make some custom tilt shields. I first had the idea for the Deathwatch librarian as a way of getting the Epistolary symbol on him and then decided to run with the idea on the rest of the blank tilt shields I had lying about. Hopefully you can see the ones that were made out of already primed bits.

As for the Crimson Tears, I've finished the 8th Breacher:

I wanted him I to look like he's running up the rubble in front of a breach and is ready to chuck a melta bomb into the gap to clear it.

IceAngel - Oh wow, yeah that's really taking forging the narrative to it's fullest conclusion. Well done for having the dedication to undertake that! Thanks for the Breacher compliment and I completely agree with you, chain axes are badass; they just look brutal. The thing on his left hand is the shield handle, the Mk. III breacher kit comes with shields separate from the hand unlike the Boarding squad upgrade kit, it looks chunky enough to be a weapon on it's own, right?

I still love the breacher guys. I may have to pick up that upgrade kit. I grabbed the boarding marine kits and have enjoyed them but also been rather disappointed with the options. The breacher stuff seems to be a little more customizable. There really isn't a reason why I can't mix them all together for one unit any ways, right?

I completely agree with your banner bit too. I love a good banner, don't get me wrong, just not on my guys, lol.

I've really enjoyed the opportunity the Deathwatch have provided me to play around with a few different colours (even if the majority is still black) and techniques, helping me add to my painting repetoire a little bit. The Salamander alone let me try out fire and yellow eye lenses, while I'm very pleased with how the Bronze on the Minotaur. Neither are things I have the opportunity to do with my Crimson Tears.

Thanks for looking.

IceAngel - Thanks, man. Yeah the boarding marine kit is rather limited in terms of posing. on the occasions I've really tried to do something different with one of those arms it's been a significant undertaking. Ha, yep, banners are for the Guard. They exist to be cannon fodder, right?

Right, so, after a bit of Deathwatch distraction it's time to get back to the Tears and there's plenty of their WIP stuff to finish off.

Speaking of which, the tactical squad taking cover are still gradually being added to and now they have an actual new recruit:

He's supposed to look as though he was trying to come out of his cover to take some shots but has had to crouch back down and is recoiling from shards of stone thrown up by incoming fire, hence why there's quite a bit of him not completely behind the ruin.

I also finished up bases for the remaining three squad members while I was at it and blocked in the white parts of the next marine:

The Breacher squad also got a bit of love and the penultimate member is now 75% done:

Meanwhile, because I can't focus on anything hobby related for too long apparently, I decided to start an entirely new unit - The Penitents.

One of the Crimson Tears’ deviations from the Codex Astartes is the existence in each company of unit of shamed marines dubbed Pentitents. The curious thing about these ad-hoc squads is that their members are there by their own recommendation rather than by the judgment of their peers and superiors. If a Crimson Tear believes himself to have acted in a way that would bring shame to himself and the Chapter then his honour requires him to volunteer said transgression to his company Chaplain and request assignment to the ranks of the Penitents, to be released when the marine feels his deeds are sufficient to erase the stain on his reputation. Obviously the notion of marines requiring punishment and forgiveness has attracted the attention of the Inquisition, but upon investigation it was found that the reasons for becoming a Penitent were always some perceived martial failing, whether that be failing to reload quickly enough to save a brother marine from the foe or coming second best in a duel, rather than heresy or treachery. Indeed, the disappointment of certain Inquisitorial agents at finding no evidence of corruption was palpable as was the barely supressed glee that accompanied their rigorous investigation of an Astartes Chapter. Generally on good terms with the Inquisition and its various arms, Crimson Tears commanders were quietly affronted in the face of the conduct and implicit accusations of particular operatives, individuals for whom further contact with the chapter is probably inadvisable. It is understood that rebukes heavy with barely restrained fury were sent to high ranking officials of the Ordo Hereticus as soon as the investigation was concluded and the offenders away from the Chapter. How these were received remains unknown.

The Penitents are set apart from their brothers by daubing the white parts of their armour a deep crimson and changing their pauldrons for ones sporting engraved crosses, the marks of their private shame. In an intriguing aesthetic divergence the chapter icon is repainted from crimson to white, representing the purity of deed and redemption of identity that Penitents aspire to. Knowing that the redemption of reputation and restoration of honour, in a chapter where the latter is so particularly highly valued, are contingent upon martial achievements frequently leads Penitent marines to find levels of resilience and aggression beyond those of an ordinary space marine. There are numerous battlefield reports of brothers shrugging off the most grievous of wounds in order to wreak terrible carnage on the foe. By dint of needing to redeem themselves through deeds on the battlefield Penitents almost exclusively fight with close quarter weapons, showing consistency with the Crimson Tears’ belief that the most honourable fight is face to face, blade to blade.

Once his penance is served and honour restored a Penitent will rejoin his former squad without comment or question. There are some, particularly those who believe their actions or lack thereof caused a brother to fall, who struggle to allow that their deeds have purged whatever perceived stain existed on their reputation and recquire the intervention of a Chaplain or other command figure to help re-assure them that they have done enough to return to the ranks unblemished.

Here's what a mostly painted and assembled one looks like:

They are my counts-as Death Company and I had to have a long, hard think about how to include them given that ,although I use C:BA to construct this army, I have shied away from making them overt Blood Angel Successors, but leaving out such an iconic unit like the DC would be inconceivable. Looking at those photos I need to jazz up the crimson highlights as they're not as bright as I thought.

Back to the painting desk!

Tsukuru - Thanks. There's no particularly earth shattering secret to my black. It's Army Painter Matt Black with my choice of grey edge highlight. For the Deathwatch the highlight colour is Vallejo Model Colour German Grey, whereas for the Crimson Tears it's Vallejo Model Colour Neutral Grey (Basalt Grey for vehicles).

Ice Angel - Cheers, man. I did make the blood drop a nice blue And of course the Salamander got the Heavy Flamer, can you imagine a son of Nocturne allowing anyone else to carry it? Well, ostensibly my to do list is Breachers and Tacticals, but, as I've just demonstrated, I'm not good at sticking with things.

Warboss_Waaazag - thank you very much.

Hey, Dakka, it's been a little while. I return with things to show:

Tactical Marines:

I'm not 100% sure that it's the most convincing vaulting pose you're ever likely to see, however, it's as good as it'll likely get without rebuilding from the ground up. If I had my time again I would've positioned the ruin he's vaulting over so that it was more central and I wouldn't have had to work on re-balancing the base. Hooray for micro beads, superglue and Vallejo Plastic Putty. Oh, and the occasional traitor helmet, always a good base decoration. The laser sight also seems to have gone completely orange in the photo for some reason :s

The multi-melta was part of some bits I got off ebay and, unfortunately, was prepared far more roughly than is ideal (divets where the sprue connected, mis-aligned gun barrels). Now, while I've tried to tidy it up as best I can, there's still a couple of very evident flaws, most notably those gun barrels. Coming up with a colour for the weapon cables was a bit of a challenge. I've used green for plasma, blue for lascannons/power weapons and violet/ blue-purple for force weapons; this left yellow, orange, black and grey, none of which rally took my fancy. Then I remembered a colour I love, but don't often get to use: Vallejo Model Colour Violet Red. Does what it say on the tin really, it's a fairly dark reddy-purple and I think it's worked well as a different colour to include in my colour scheme while still fitting. My particular highlight on the model so far is the targetting screen.

Penitents:

The scrolls and censor mark this Penitent as the group's current archivist, he records the deeds of each brother so that once the exhilaration of battle has subsided they can calmly reflect on their actions and determine whether they have been sufficient atonement.

Breacher:

Well, that's that for now.

kitch102 - Thank you very much! I feel a little bad now that after you praised me for the speed at which I get stuff done it's been over a month since the last update. My white is a actually surprisingly simple:
Basecoat with Vallejo Game Colour Ghosty Grey (astonishingly good coverage over black for such a pale colour).
3-4 coats of thin GW Ceramite White
3-4 coats of thin Vallejo Model Colour White.
If shading's required I'll use VGC Stonewall Grey or Vallejo Pale Grey Wash

I used to do a bazillion coats of Skull White when I first started these guys and while the above can still be a little time-consuming, it's nowhere near as bad as those earlier efforts and it yields much better results

Captain Nathaniel, Crimson Tears 2nd Company

Nathaniel has been Captain of the Crimson Tears 2nd Company for a century and a half, having served in its ranks first as a tactical support marine [//class: meltagun operative//] and later as sergeant of an assault squad when it became clear that, despite his growing experience, his battle-lust was being ill-served in tactical squad. Under his command these assault marines became deadlier than they had ever been with campaign records detailing devastating charge after devastating charge, on occasion turning the tide of battles on their own. Their efficacy has been attributed to the blend of abilities that have led to Nathaniel’s ascension to the rank of Captain: an indomitable warrior spirit and an almost preternatural ability to assess a battlefield. Between the ranks of Veteran Sergeant and Captain came a stint as Company Champion. His notable kills during this time include ‘Bagrot Spine Cruncher’, a fearsome Ork Pirate whose predatory fleets threatened to paralyse trade on the Segmentum Pacificus and Segmentum Solar border; the Greater Daemon of Slaanesh R’thnai, whose summoning by a pleasure cult on Gudrun threatened to destabilise the Scarus Sector; and the Wych Cult of Malice’s Succubus when their raiding party set down on Joura. His martial prowess is marked less for its prodigious skill and more for its relentless ferocity. He will routinely triumph over more dextrous and adept opponents by virtue of his unremitting commitment to the fight, outlasting and exhausting them if need be while never permitting his own stamina to diminish. His strikes land with the same force and frequency at the end of an engagement as at the start.

He has not always served with the 2nd Company, though, and it is his past that perhaps explains the hate-fuelled stubbornness that ensures he will never yield or fade on the battlefield and which has seen him through countless engagements. The fated nature of the Crimson Tears 5th Company is fairly well documented and has been all but destroyed no fewer than four times. Nathaniel is a survivor of the third decimation some 350 years ago. Pursuing Eldar Corsairs through the edge of the Segmentum Obscurus and the periphery of the Utima Segmentum the company found themselves led to the Ghoul Stars whereupon their quarry vanished. For reasons unknown, with interference from one of the region’s abominable psychic entities suspected, the company fleet strayed further beyond the limits of safe space and soon enough ran into great difficulty. The seven survivors of an almost full company were found back at the very edge of the Ghoul Stars by a passing Deathspecters patrol, some distance from where the onboard logs of the Crimson Tears ships reported their furthermost position to be. With so few remaining astartes, many of whom were incapacitated, and the total annihilation of human crew it is unclear how the trio of ships were piloted away from whatever danger exterminated the rest of the company. What data was recoverable from the ships’ various recording devices and that escaped Inquisitorial censure shows decks transformed into nightmarish charnel houses. Nathaniel has never spoken of what happened among those dread stars since being debriefed by Inquisitorial agents from the Ordos Malleus and Xenos. Whether he even knows is the subject of some speculation.

Like most of the 5th’s survivors he sought transfer to a new company rather than stay and aid the reconstruction of his shattered one, eager for battle to expunge his grief. Like the rest of the 5th’s diaspora, he fights to honour the memory of those brothers he has lost, fully aware that inter-company rivalry can often lead some battle brothers to think unduly ill of the 5th‘s competence for repeatedly suffering such grave misfortune. Thus he views his every effort on the field of battle as being an opportunity to establish that it is not the 5th’s martial capabilities that let them down and led to their destruction, that a member of the 5th can fight just as well, if not better, than their brothers from other companies. The grim determination and implacability these motives confer make him easy to follow, he will do more than he would expect of any battle brother and in return they seek to exceed his expectations and match his deeds. His survival has also conferred upon him a sense of invulnerability, if this is challenged, if he sustains injury, it seems only to inspire him to fight even harder, to prove that none of his foes can best him. More than once this has seen him spend lengthy periods under the care of the chapter’s apothecaries , yet he still lives.

He has almost been lost to the chapter on several occasions as a result, the most notable being on Hydraphur where the 2nd, 6th and 7th companies strayed into the path of a Hive Fleet Charybdis splinter as they hunted for Craftworld Iybraesil in the outermost regions of the Segmentum Pacificus. Most of the Tyranids were destroyed in space by the combined fleets of the Crimson Tears and Imperial Navy, but some of the larger creatures sent many spores towards the planet before being accounted for. Upon making planetfall veterans were sent to marshal the planet’s PDF and lead them in protecting the planet’s civilian populations while bike and land speeder squadrons ranged the area around the Tyranid landing sites, hoping to draw the attention of the aliens and lead them back to established defensive positions. The Crimson Tears chose their battlefield on the plains just outside the hive nearest to the Tyranid spores setting up an iron wall of Predators, Razorbacks and Tarantulas between which stood the marines themselves. On the second day the bikers’ deadly game of cat and mouse with the aliens successfully brought them back to the safety of their brother’s lines, hotly pursued by a voracious tidal wave of tooth and talon. For hours the guns fired incessantly and the Chapter’s fast attack elements worked tirelessly to exterminate Tyranids that strayed from the main swarm and to keep the mass focussed on the main Crimson Tears line rather than the nearby hive. Shortly before nightfall the ammunition stocks were running low enough to be a future concern and while the Tyranids were greatly diminished, there were still more than enough to overwhelm the space marine lines and possibly the planet if the big guns were to be silenced. Seeking to avert this impending threat, Nathaniel identified the largest Synapse creature he could see in the swarm, a truly monstrous creature of the Hive Tyrant classification and set out for it, hoping to plunge the swarm into disarray as most of the other synapse creatures had already been eliminated. He was accompanied by his personal Honour Guard, the combined companies’ Penitents and several assault squads. Behind them was to come a rumbling wall of tanks –razorbacks with their armaments switched for heavy flamers, predators with as much ammunition as remained – and tactical marines. The thrust of assault troops was to draw the remnants of the swarm’s attention while those behind them thinned the numbers from the periphery of what was surely to become a fearsome melee. Despite devising the plan, Nathaniel had only eyes for the Hive Tyrant. He fought as though possessed against all the creatures that barred his way and soon outstripped the phalanx of warriors he had led into the swarm, single-mindedly carving a path through the living wall of chitin and claw towards his designated target. While the marines accompanying him tried to close the gap he had opened, they could not do so and thus they turned all their attention to the beasts assailing them from all sides. The fighting became noticeably easier before too long and post-battle analysis revealed that this was when Nathaniel slew the Hive Tyrant. They continued to fight until nothing assailed them and night fell, retreating to the nearby hive until morning when the bikes and land speeders set off once again, this time to search and destroy rather than goad. Others were dispatched to the field alongside PDF work parties to destroy the corpses of the foe and claim the bodies of fallen brothers. Nathaniel was found impaled upon one of the Hive Tyrant’s massive talons, his infernus pistol buried in its eye socket and his glaive thrust through its neck, gravely wounded, but still alive.

Like a number of Crimson Tears commanders he sports an eerie Death Mask rather than a helmet as an affectation to unsettle or even inspire fear in such enemies as can feel it. The crimson tear it features is both a typical artisanal flourish of chapter iconography and an indication of his continued, profound grief. There are rumours that his mask is worn to cover up horrendous scars sustained while enduring the horrors of the Ghoul Stars, but, as he has never removed it in the presence of non-Chapter members, these are unconfirmed. His artificer armour is modified mk. IV highly decorated with various battle honours and symbols of office. Unusually, for a one of his position he carries a vial of his own blood into combat; the Crimson Tears’ leadership groups are supposed to remain neutral on the matter of ritual blood sanctification until the Chaplaincy pronounces on how to approach this relatively new practice among the battle brothers. Indeed, Nathaniel was due to be censured for such a breach of duty, but escaped that indignity. The vial is an object of commemoration for the brothers he lost in the decimation of the 5th company. It is shaped like a tear to reflect his continued mourning and the blood it contains remains unsanctified. Once this was explained to the chapter’s Reclusiarchs they were content to permit it’s continued presence on his battle plate. Similarly, the reliquary he carries into battle contains a bone from the battle brother he was found next to when rescued by the Deathspecters.

With Nathaniel wrapped up and still very consumed by the painting bug I decided to continue clearing my desk of half-finished projects. Some of you may recognise the legs on this chap from several months ago, they've been dusted off and attached to a torso now:

Separate shot of the head so there's a slightly better look at the eyes.

Getting back to work on this guy I was reminded of the fact that although I love the aesthetic of Forgeworld Dreads I much prefer plastic to resin when edge highlighting. Resin can look absolutely fine and dandy until you try to highlight in a straight line and then all these little imperfections start popping up hellbent on doing nothing other than ensuring your line is imperfect. He's got storm bolters because I really like the underslung ones FW do for their dreads, plus it's nearly flipping impossible to get the appropriate heavy flamer and meltagun bits for these. Flamers only come with the Ironclad and I've used those while the meltagun seems to only come with the Seismic Hammer or a Chainfist. Not at the moment apart from that, the picture kind of says it all. I may rework the highlights on the shield as they don't really seem to be showing up all that well. Could be a lighting issue. Working on the power plant at the moment and then I'll have to think about how to tackle the arms, mainly which bits stay black, which bits white and how much decoration to apply. I've bulked them up with the extra shoulder armour I didn't use from the Forgeworld Iron Clad.

I also finally got around to doing something with one of the four Tarantula's I've got lying around. They're actually quite big and that's made finding bases for them quite tricky. Ultimately I've gone for the 90 x125 mm oval, although a bit too large they should provide me with the opportunity to create mini diorama's should the mood take me. Plus I'm not hitting a gaming table any time soon so it's not like it really matters.

Here's a quick shot o Nathaniel him with his Brother-Captain's of the 3rd and 4th companies. Creepy masks ahoy!

I can see a few things on Ezekiel that I want to go back and fix now...
